Awfully executed and long-winded

I could write at length about this, it's hard to summarise how flawed this potentially exciting title is. Yes you can roam, climb, and fight. However, while the world is populated by small Nazi checkpoints, trucks, and towers you can blow up these will become INCREDIBLY tedious. All it involves is you walking up to it and laying dynamite which quickly loses its charm. You will receive 'contraband' (currency) to buy weapons (you won't bother, seeing as you can pick them up off enemies- except the silenced pistol) and ammo (you get enough contraband from missions for this). There are so many of the damn things you will feel like you aren't making any difference; so you'll quickly tire of them and actually want to do missions. Climbing is a process of MASHING spacebar to jump up from ledge to ledge. You will rarely need to use the climbing function except to escape from Nazis after a mission to hide on a spot in the roof. In fact, later on this will be your only need to go on the roof as otherwise you will be unable to escape the Nazis. Despite being a resistance fighter, you will repeatedly run over (while being chased, so many people!), fuck over, and otherwise harm the French citizens. The game requires you to have a car, and you will often just jack these from poor French people. Oh well, I guess we're fighting the good fight? There's no consequences for any of this. The script, the setting, all seems like a serious story that just can't help but giggle at itself. Immersion breaking. Travelling to missions (seeing as you can't be bothered with blowing up trucks anymore) is SO LONG. There's no cool music on the way, nothing to enjoy. You will spend an enormous chunk of your time doing this. Many missions are often SHORTER than the travel time to go to the next mission. The missions are usually boiled down to "shoot the Nazi", and your best bet is the story missions. But what's the point? It's the same thing again and again. Skip this title!

Fun gameplay, stupid Hollywood tone

A blend of Red Faction: Guerrilla, Assassin's Creed and GTA, The Saboteur follows the adventures of Sean Devlin, an Irish guy who assists the French Resistance in WWII Paris by blowing stuff up gratuitously. The gameplay is fun, with the ability to disguise yourself, sneak around, climb rooftops and be as stealthy or forceful as you like. Areas that are German held are black-and-white, turning colourful when liberated. BY FAR the best bit is the sabotage. You can plant dynamite on anything and you can delay the explosions. You can even turn your car into a bomb. If what's written so far appeals to you, get it. However, there are some grating issues. The game is marred by tone and realism problems and this translates to both the story and arcade-y gameplay too. Like AC, it's a power fantasy rather than a balanced game. On "Hard" difficulty, Sean can survive being shot by the entire Wehrmacht for a good 40 seconds. Secondly, the sheer scale of destruction Sean unleashes ruins suspension of disbelief. He single handedly wins WWII...! Expect to kill 500,000 soldiers on the streets, destroy entire tank battalions with dynamite and escape capture every time. In the capital of Vichy France! The game also adds silly fictional aspects that damage the authentic atmosphere. You'll see super soldiers with miniguns (uhh?), tanks that look like they came out of C&C and the Gestapo drive huge black sinister racing cars with machineguns attached. Finally, the story is so cliched and cartoonishly Hollywood it's painful. Sean is pretty unlikable. They made him maximum OIRISH, complete with every single possible stereotype. Alcoholic, violent, criminal, womaniser, hates England, flatcap. Every woman he meets is a buxom, feisty sex symbol and instantly wants to bed him despite his insanely abrasive personality. They tried to establish a plausible villain and then make his bodyguard a leather-clad, huge-breasted dominatrix. WTF? Overall a fair game, let down by the silly tone.

I'm a dad with no time; still completed.

Sandbox of a city open for exploration, liberation, generally blowing stuff up and even stealth segments. What's not to like? Completionists get enough of Ubisoft-Tickers on the map. The story takes itself way too seriously, but the protagonist is Irish enough about the whole thing to care - which let me identify with him perfectly. The only dated part about this game for me was the climbing feature - especially after expiriencing Assassins Creed.

Great!

Strong game. Good mechanically, great narratively. Think Saints Row + GTA with some Nazi branding. I didn't finish it but I'm glad I bought it. It's probably worth your time, I found it very enjoyable.

A solid "Farewell" from Pandemic

Before Pandemic shut down, they made this game as a swan song. While it's not the greatest game ever made, far from it, it does however bring hours of fun. The environment, the characters, the music, and the overall atmosphere are great. The gameplay is fun, but it can feel repetitive if you play it for a long period. I think the main issue of why I can't give this game a 5 star is because it feels unpolished on some parts (bugs, glitchy animation) and... it feels like it's missing something. I feel like the game would benefit from more activities other than collecting, destroying nazi structures, and racing. Maybe if Pandemic had been given more time, we would have seen more things and more polish. For what it is, it's a good game, it's fun. For a low price, I recommend it. I got 40 hours from this game, so it's pretty good. Thank you Pandemic, for creating this.
