Description
RoBoRumble is a real-time 3D strategy game, offering two major battle campaigns consisting of 15 missions each and a multi-player mode with hot combat for up to four players at a time. One of RoBoRumble's key features is the unique way in which Units are assembled. Unlike most games of this type, where the player is given a palette of already designed Units to choose from, in RoBoRumble the player constructs his own from a palette of different components. This gives a far greater number of variations and adds an extra strategic dimension to the game.

Each Unit (known as a "Robo") consists of a chassis and a weapon mounted on it. Available chassis designs range from two- or four-legged runners to jet-propelled, tracked or wheel-based craft and even tele-porters. There's also no shortage of weapons to mount on them. In addition to the standard lasers, heavy artillery and machine guns, RoBoRumble offers some imaginative creations like an "Oiler", that slows the enemy down by leaving slippery pools in his path, and the "Whirlwind", that picks up the enemy and throws him against the nearest wall. Each of the two parties in the conflict have eight different chassis and weapons to choose from. One side leans more toward "brawn", utilizing pure firepower, while the other tries the "brains" method of better weapons design. Whichever side the player chooses, only a small pool of weapons is available at the beginning. The player can increase the pool by giving out development contracts between missions.

The third optional component of a Robo is the so-called "Booster". This normally costs only a fraction of the other two components, but can have a huge effect on the game. Some Boosters double the Robo's speed, while others give the Robo more firepower or firing range, make him invisible, or increase his intelligence.

The relatively complex way of creating Robos stands in heavy contrast to the intentionally simple resource management. The source and at the same time, the main base, of the player's and the enemy's army is a dome-shaped, glowing "Energy Pool", which he must protect from attacks. The pool's capacity, which varies with each mission, is given to the player as a "budget" and used to create Robos. When a Robo is destroyed, his "energy" (the energy which was invested in creating him), flows back into the pool, so the player can build new units.

The base consists of three different energy levels. Whenever one of these levels comes under sustained fire and is destroyed, it triggers a violent explosion that, in turn, destroys all enemies in the immediate area. This "cleansing" effect sees to it that the defending party gains time to gather his troops and go on the counterattack.

STORY
The distant future – the planet Mars. The biggest arms contract in the history of the human race will be given to one side. The most powerful prototypes square off in a head-to-head battle. The winner closes the deal of a lifetime and gets the honor of defending Earth in the Final Battle against the evil Aliens. Will that lucky person be you? Build powerful battle robots from components like Chassis, Weapon and Booster. The battle’s starting and you’re right in the thick of things – with freely definable camera perspectives, spectacular effects, unlimited zoom and scroll, colored light sources, terrain morphing and 3D sound. Pure action – pure excitement!
  • Tactical 3D real-time strategy game which breaks free of the normal conventions
  • More than just a “shoot-em-up” – unusual features and innovative weapon systems add a complex element to this easy-to-play game
  • Over 30 missions in two campaigns
  • The “building block” principle lets you assemble a battle robot to fit your tactics – literally hundreds of different combinations are possible!
  • You can freely move, rotate or tilt the camera perspective

Real time logic strategy puzzle

Robo Rumble, or Reflux, as it's also known as, is a strange mix of real-time strategy and a logical puzzle game. Each mission has pretty much the same goal - destroy the enemy. However, it's never as simple as just building up an army and assaulting the enemy base. Each mission is a problem you must solve using the tools given to you at the start of the mission. Usually, you need a proper army composition. Sometimes you must hold key location, or even time your attacks correctly. This, unfortunately, means that some missions have one solution, so the replayability is minimal. You do not gather resources, rather you are given a set amount of money to build your army, and if any of your robots get destroyed, that money is refunded - so you need not worry about running out of funds. You can mix and match robot parts to tackle the task at hand. You combine of chassis and weapons that suit your needs plus special modifiers like rapid-fire or extra shields (these are usually non-essential, but can make the mission easier if used correctly). All this affects the robots price and allows some for experimentation. The graphics and sounds are nothing spectacular, and in my opinion, had't aged well. But they don't really influence the gameplay. Also, the UI is minimal. All-in-all whether you should buy the game or not depends on what you seek in an RTS. If you like base building and managing the economy, this is probably not for you. However, if you prefer to focus on just on controlling your units and like to be challenged by different mission types, this game might be up your alley.

Atypical Good Old RTS

Yay! I actually hoped this one would come to GOG! At it's core the game is kind of simple, you have a handful of propulsion types and maybe 8 guns (and that's only during the endgame, when everything is researched). In 2017 some free-to-play smartphone apps have more variety ;). But the game gives you interesting missions to crack and it's all about those "aha! I think I know how to win this one!" moments. There is a bit of odd character to this one - you are trying to win a government bid and your co-workers are a curious bunch, not to mention your competitor who might be playing dirty...or not, you are never quite sure. But I definitely had a lot of fun experimenting with robot builds and assembling that team of 2-3 units that will be able to make it all the way to enemy base...only to get destroyed when they succesfully attack and make the base explode ;) It has fun, thinking and odd charm, definitely a Good Old Game!

Quite good

2 factions with different playstyles, 15 + 1 mission each, most of which require figuring out a certain gimmick to successfully beat. Plays mostly like an RTS game with a twist that you only get a main "building" and a fixed amount of resources to construct your robos. Whenever your unit gets destroyed, the remains return to your base and you can re-use the resources. You can mix and match whatever weapon/chassis/enhancement you wish to try and figure out strategies to beat the scenarios. Most missions will require you to destroy the enemy base. It's health bar is split into 3 parts. Whenever you completely damage a part, a huge explosion occurs that completely wipes any of your units, meaning most scenarios require at least 3 successful attacks on the enemy base. In most missions, the AI has some distinct advantage and you (usually) can't brute force it differently as it spams out/replaces any lost units constantly. Some missions are quite cheesable though, especially if you play the "blue" faction, which is so massively overpowered compared to the "red" faction, it's not even funny. With the red faction, some missions can be a struggle. But I breezed through the blue campaign mostly like a knife through butter. Probably also because the "blue" campaign is more tutorial-like and probably meant to be played first (which I did not). Between levels, you can spend earned cash to buy intel on the enemy or upgrades/boosters for your robos, base or "secret inventions". This is very prone to save/loading, because you can "try your luck" whenever it comes to paying for these. One of the possible results is that you are given the thing in question for free. "Hmmm, do I want to pay 10 million for this upgrade which I will be saving for over several missions, or do I just reload until I get the result I want and get the ludicrously expensive thing for free? Decisions, decisions..." Overall, quite fun though. Really should have played this earlier. An easy 8/10.

If you can zoom out, it's much more fun!

I remember playing this game as a kid. It was probably included on a CD from a computer games magazine. But I wasn't able to finish it back then. When I recognized it here on GOG, I thought I might give it another try. Unfortunately, I was immediately put off by the extremely limited zoom settings. You have to constantly scroll to see where to go and what to do. Fortunately, this was easy to modify, so you can find my zoom mod on modDB. For the review of the game itself: +/- It's more puzzle-solving than strategy (which is neither a plus nor a minus for me). + The concept of building your own mechs is fun (chassis + weapon + booster = many possibilities). - There's a buggy mission (Terraflux/Brainpower 12) that can't be completed as intended (also fixed by my mod). I have no idea how this got through the official release. - There are very few quality of life options (waypoints cannot be set, hotkeys cannot be changed, ...). - Some inventions that you can buy from your assigned scientist are pretty useless (e.g., the one that supposedly lets your mechs survive with 1% of their hit points after destroying a base is not working at all) - Some chassis and weapons are also pretty useless. Snails and Cubes are far too slow and expensive to ever be viable, Antigravitons and Propellers getting destroyed from a single shot while moving, and Whirlwind being bugged, as it can't even push units into acid or water areas like Magneton can. + The Alien Weapon Booster, found in certain missions, offers great strategic options. In some cases, it not only increases a single mech's damage, but can also modify its weapon in interesting ways: For example, Disruptors can drive enemy mechs mad and attack anyone nearby (which probably went unnoticed, as it was bugged - also fixed by my mod), Force Fields can move without breaking their link, or Magnetons can instantly kill mechs they push against walls.
