RtCW lives on!

RTCW is an awesome game,that still holds up quite well kicking classic N@z1 butt! It WILL play on modern PC's and if you are experiencing the Black Screen and Crashes at start-up. Follow this. - Search for "Markshan Return to Castle Wolfenstein v1.42d" and download his patch. Its in a 1.57Mb zip file. This will address some known crashes and some bug fixes. Open the Zip and drop those in the base folder of where you installed the game. - go to the install director [Return to Castle Wolfenstein\Main\] and open wolfconfig.cfg in a text editor. - Change the following Lines for Widescreen support (change XXXX and YYYY to your prefered resolution i.e. 2560 and 1440) seta r_customaspect "1" seta r_customwidth "XXXX" seta r_customheight "YYYY" seta r_mode "-2" seta cg_fixedAspect "2" - Change your Frame Rate [Warning - playing at anything above 60fps on modern PC's will impact the Enemy A.I.'s ability to fight against you, blame the engine for actually utilizing the CPU. They will be more accurate and aimbot-like. It would be advised to keep the frame rate between 30 and 50 fps] IF you dont mind the challenge you can go up to 91 fps without needing support from a mod. seta com_maxfps "XX" Change this to prevent a Video glitch with the left corner of the screen taking over the entire screen. Set it to "1" seta r_glIgnoreWicked3D "1" Add this line to prevent Frame Drops in modern PC's seta r_primitives "2"

Still fun after all these years

Love the game play. If you ever have the need to take on the Third Reich alone plus some demonic creature this is the game for you. The Catacombs are very spooky and makes you feel like you can be attacked any second (which in most cases you are) I love using the I'm now in the process of re-playing it for the 6th time since it was first published in 2000. When throwing the German Stick Grenades (Potato Mashers) at the NAZI's they will pick them up and throw them back at you! Love it :) I have this running perfectly with graphics at maximum with Linux Mint 18 natively. id software released the game engine awhile back so I compiled it on my 64 bit Linux system--transferred the game files and it runs very well. Thanks GOG for making this title available again. It is well worth the $5.99 price tag.

It's an oldie but a goodie.

I bought this game on sale recently (August 2018). One odd thing was the screen resolutions didn't include 1920x1080, so a quick search found the unofficial patch to 1.42d. It's a bit risky to patch unofficially, so I made a backup of the entire game first. After installing the patch, more Wide Screen resolutions were available, including 1920x1080. That is a pretty common resolution to use these days. The game shows these as "WS" resolutions in the options menu, and they pop up after normal resolutions. The game worked just fine with the 1.42d patch for me under Windows 10. For its age, the game looks great and runs very well, especially compared to my experience with it 15+ years ago. As I recall, it was struggling on my computer at the time at a much lower resolution. Now it's all nostalgia, plus a much improved gaming experience at a reasonable price and no DRM. Heck of a deal.

A piece of history

Castle, nazis, monsters, occult, adrenaline pumping music, secrets to explore ( no need for achievements or any upgrade BS). 100/100. To everyone that didn't had the pleasure of playing this timeless classic, get it now, on sale or not. It needs to be in your library and played at least once. Thank god it runs smooth on Windows 11. You may need a widescreen fix or just play it like that. You will never regret it. It has sugar, spice and everything nice.

This is THE FPS.

This game is pretty much perfection. This is how you make a sequel to a legendary game like Wolf 3D. It has decent story, incredible gunplay, variety in missions, enemies and weapons, all with graphics that still hold up to this day. But even better, you can use some of the stellar community mods to bump this game up from amazing to extraordinary. Most notably the Venom mod. It improves the graphics in a huge way and even improves the enemy AI. Really brings this game to new life even in 2020. I make sure to replay it game at least once every year. It is a sweet, compact and pretty much flawless package that all other shooters should take notes from and proves that to be old-school, you don't have to go back all the way to the 90s. By far the best Wolfenstein game and one of the best FPS games ever. If you haven't played it yet, you are doing yourself a disservice.
