The only big flaw of this game is that you can 't play it twice.
This is a good investigation game. Usually, I'm not very into this type of game because of all the puzzle with bizarre solving making no sense. This isn't the case here. Everything is coherent, making the investigation a real pleasure, not easy though.
Adding to that the music, the voice acting and the peculiar artistic direction and you get one of a kind game, a must play if you're into mystery and puzzle. I recommand you to do it in a short amount of time, to have in mind the context and what's hapenning.
I really wanted to like this. I enjoy Puzzle games but I think I have a few impairments that make it impossible for me to play this at all.
First of all it looks really nice at first and the athmosphere is really great.
The things that made this extremely frustrating are:
1. My eyes can't really differentiate between characters because of the graphics. I see that some people have beards and some are women but that's about it. I can't even pinpoint the murder weapon in many cases
2. I have no idea about english accents
3. My brain is wired to not make assumptions based on looks, nationality or how people speak
4. I don't know anything about work on a ship or hierarchy in the military or anything like that.
I know there is a glossary but this doesn't help me, I just don't know what job comes with what sort of clothing and even if I did I can't really see the clothing because of point 1
5. Ambiguous wording - this might be even more annoying because I'm playing in German but I looked up some things and I'm sure I couldn't be sure with the english words as well if a cause of death is "getting hit", "getting hit hard" or "getting hit by a stick".
I feel like the game expects me to jump to conclusions with every single item. I can't be sure about a type of death if I can't be sure the character will show up way later or if the killing blow was made even earlier.
I am not going to say someone is "Italian" because they talk in a funny manner.
I would even consider all these things my "faults" - maybe detective is not a job for me as it seems to be mostly guesswork instead of conclusions.
But then there is the gameplay and by god is it tedious to revisit those memories. I don't think there is a better way than to slowly walk towards the cadavers one by one. Maybe I haven't found a better way since the game is intentionally quiet when it comes to helping the player but this makes it unplayable for me.
I will actually look up the story since this is compelling at least.
Return of the Obra Dinn is a mystery adventure game from Lucas Pope, best known for Papers, Please. It's a huge "whodunnit" type puzzle, where you piece together narrative shown to you out of order and try to figure out what happened, to whom, how and why. The premise is rather simple - a ship returns with dead bodies on board and you, with some mysterious clock that lets you watch final moments of some people on board, need to clear the fates of every single person who was on board.
Every memory is presented as a freeze frame you can explore with some great voice acting and ambience that usually contains hints, which opens with a more dramatic presentation but is later available for you to revisit at any point if you need more references. Once you've filled in the names and fates of three people correctly those people disappear from the list of suggestions for unidentified people. This motivates you to be careful with your investigation, but also do some guessing at times.
Thought it does become a bit frustrating in the last parts of your investigation, once you've seen all memories and easily identified about a half of the crew, as quite a lot of the rest will require at least a bit of guessing. This also involves manually finding the correct scene you want to rewatch to refresh your memory and entering it, then exiting it, finding the next one and etc.
But the game is still extremely interesting, the story is good and full of quite unexpected supernatural twists that are somewhat reminiscent of how normalcy and magic combined in the classic The Last Express and the music complements the journey quite well.
If you like games that allow you to really dive into untangling the mystery, restoring the chronology and feeling like a detective and you can excuse some occasional quality of life deficiencies, this game is an absolute must have.
Obra Dinn is a unique game in the fact that most of the gameplay comes from your ability to reason and deduce. You are tasked with finding the fates of the members aboard a ship in 1803. Everything the game gives you contains clues that you might not expect at first glance. All in all this a phenomenal time with a well executed idea, supported by great music and voice acting.
I was a bit skeptical when I decided to buy the game but... wow, this is something different.
I'm at loss of words... great idea, unique graphics, excellent voice acting, earworm soundtracks, challenging detective work that makes you think.
It's a very particular style and I understand not everyone will like it.
The ending could have been a bit better IMHO, but other than that, all was great.
9/10
It's mindblowing to think that a single person managed to create this game from start to finish.
