Wow!

Man, this thang is something else! Fun as Superhell, fast as shit, bugless, assloads of different gameplay modes, bales of retarded humor and last but not least . . . UGLY-GORGEOUS 8-BIT EYE-PIZZA, BITCHES! Not only is this one of the best indie games I've ever experienced, it's one of the best GAMES I've ever played! Hey, I know it's famous for all the pop references, but believe me: that's just sweet icing on the delicious cake. It would still thump hawt booty without 'em!

An instant classic!!

I would recommend this game for males between the ages of 27 to 45.. In this game they pay tribute to older video games, movies and cartoons.. The game play is similar to the first 2 GTA's.. But on this game it has guns like that on Contra and tanks like on Ikari Warriors on NES... Check this game out if you were raised in the 80's and 90's.. It's AWESOME!!!

An authentic homage to '80s gaming

Retro City Rampage takes the gameplay of the early bird's-eye view GTA games and beautifully transports it to an 8-bit world. Everything about this game bleeds authenticity. The graphics feel as though they'd be right at home on an NES. Environments are vibrant, colorful, and fun, with little touches like jackhammering construction crews, breakdancing street performers, and amusing signage filling virtually every screen. The music is held to the same four channel limitation composers faced on an NES, with wonderfully creative, classic-sounding results. The only liberty taken is the amount of stuff occurring on screen is well beyond what any NES could handle without incredible stuttering, but that is one area where being untrue to the era is desirable. So many indie titles going for an 8-bit style have mismatched sprite sizes and lazily composed/stolen music, so RCR's efforts to get it right stand out as being especially laudable. The game is clearly designed for people who grew up in the late '80s/early '90s, and it relies heavily on nostalgia for that era. References are dropped to virtually every major game title of the time as well as pop culture phenomena like Saved by the Bell and Ghostbusters. Like so much reference-based humor, it is hit and miss, but the throwback gameplay sequences that come hand in hand with the jokes are faithful and enjoyable. Bottom line: Highly recommended for people looking for a good throwback gaming experience.

A perfect companion to 80s nostalgia

Retro City Rampage is a must play if you are a fan of the 80s era of gaming, or if you love references and humor. I also recommend it to those that like the old GTA games. The graphics are perfect, this game looks just like an NES game! But if that's not your favorite, there are several color options to make it look more like Sega Master System, Commodore 64, CGA or EGA DOS games, etc. The game took me about 9 hours to beat the game and side missions, and that's not including free roaming, minigames, arcade missions, etc. The soundtrack is stellar, fans of chiptunes will really dig the soundtrack. Even though it has an old school look, the game does incorporate some modern gameplay mechanics like cover shooting, waypoints, and hints when you fail. The game offers a good challenge, the difficulty is balanced, with a couple of exceptions where it spikes up some, but most gamers wont have a problem beating this. The storyline only serves to keep the humor flowing, but old school games arent known for story. The game is best with a gamepad, and is more than worth the $15 asking price with all that you get.

Retro City Rampage is an open-world action game in the Grand Theft Auto vein...with a twist: RCR's graphics style, story, and Pop culture references are all ripped straight out of the 1980s. PROS: + Healthy sized open world. + Tons of side quests and unlockable content. + Good sense of humor. 1980s Pop culture references, indie and retro game nods, and the humor is light-hearted. + Versions for Windows, Mac, Linux, and even MS-DOS are all included. + LOW hardware requirements: even most netbooks can run RCR. + Controls with either mouse and keyboard or USB gampads. Both Direct Input (Logitech/PS3/PS4/generic) and Xinput (360) are supported. + A steal at only $10, and often on sale for even less. CONS: - "Old school" graphics may put off graphics snobs. - No multiplayer...yet.
