Your Special Tactics and Rescue Squad has been choppered to a remote mansion to investigate a biotechnical experiment gone hideously wrong. Before you can say "mass murder," you're plunged straight into a deathtrap writhing with man-eating freaks, swarming crows and rabid dogs.
Arm yourself with knives and flame-throwers scavenged from dead teammates. Solve puzzles, disarm traps and unearth mysteries. But beware: every move you make draws you deeper into the deadly embrace of Resident Evil™.
The iconic classic is back, better than ever, and made to last forever. Here's how we ensured it and what you can expect with GOG's version of the game:
Full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11.
All 4 localizations of the game included (English, German, French, Japanese).
Improved DirectX game renderer.
New rendering options (Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization Control, Gamma Correction, Integer Scaling, Anti-Aliasing and more).

Our version of the game keeps all the original content intact – 1996's description is no exception. Take a trip down memory lane and see how Resident Evil™ was described to gamers when it launched all those years ago:

Completely uncut, with even more blood, graphic violence and gory scenes than the worldwide monster hit version on PlayStation
A swarm of unknown horrors prowl the mansion's hundreds of rooms, including it's underground lairs, the graveyard and some unwelcoming guest houses
Unprecedented detail-intense texture maps, shadows and lighting effects, plus ever-changing camera angles, create a frighteningly rich 3-D environment.
Choose to play tough guy marksman Chris Redfield or hardcore demolition expert Jill Valentine, both brought to life with realistic polygon character graphics.
Ominous digital surround soundtrack features haunting music that intensifies the action.

i can run the game but im not able to open the inventory on controller or keyboard. the character select cards keep auto switching to where i have to button mash and pray i get the character i want to play as. ive tried different suggested fixes on the forums but none have worked. if you buy this or the trilogy be ready for possible issues. until GOG can figure out the main cause it seems like the issues are a random chance of if youll get them or not. if you do get them i hope its an easier fix for you than it is for me.
after they fix the issues ill bump my rating up to a 5 star cause as it stands right now i cant really recommend this version to ppl unless they are willing to spend hours troubleshooting.
So the game itself is a classic, nothing wrong there. But I am having issues where everytime I launch the game I get FMV sounds but then when I load into the game itself I have to Alt+Tab to get the game audio to come through my speakers. Similarly my DS4 controller seems to arbitrarily disconnect after playing for awhile and then the game refuses to reestablish a connection with the controller unless I shut it down an relaunch it. If GOG can address and fix these issues I'll update my review to the 5 stars this game deserves.
First of all, this 2/5 score is exclusively aimed at the quality of this specific release. The game itself is an easy 5/5 and one of my favourite games ever, though I don't think there are many people left who are still on the fence about whether RE1 is a good game or not.
So, I've completed a full run with Chris today, and in that time I noticed:
- TERRIBLE music quality, the files are so compressed you can hear a *lot* of white noise in the background whenever music is playing.
- Framerate issues...not framerate drops, for once; but the game will randomly accelerate for a bit, and while I'm certainly not opposed to 60FPS, the inconsistent framerate is a bit off-putting. It mostly occured in the big lab room with the naked zombies, and didn't occur much in the rest of the game. It was only a few seconds at most so I'd definitely consider this a minor problem at most, but it's there.
- Even with graphical options in the directX executable turned on, there's basically no difference and the game remains noticeably uglier than the Mediakite release with Classic REbirth.
- Not exactly a problem, but there's a bit of a missed opportunity with the backgrounds. The main thing I was really hoping for from a new RE1 release was rerendered backgrounds so we could finally have them in their full glory rather than having to pick between pixel soup and overly smoothed AI visuals, but perhaps Capcom simply lost the 3D scenes a long time ago. Not really a fault from this release but a shame nonetheless in any case. It also kind of tracks with the very barebones nature of this release.
As it stands, this is entirely inferior to the patched Mediakite release, which I already owned. I still bought the bundle because I didn't own RE3 on PC, and to show support for classic RE rereleases on PC, but this just doesn't cut it for me. Really hoping there will be updates to make this worth it because as it is, I don't gain anything from purchasing this, as I suspect many other people do.
To see this game suddenly come out on GoG was an amazing thing but after picking it up and playing sadly I cannot recommend the game or collection because there are better alternatives to playing this version.
This is a re-release of the original Resident Evil 1 for PC and not the Director's Cut version that was only available for console so there are missing features.
There are no options in game other than keybinding, there is no difficulty selector, the FMVs are about 1 second or so out of sync with the audio so you will hear the sound of the blood before you see the blood during the first time you see a zombie and this is not the only FMV that does this, the shooting in the room with the statue for some reason shoots at double the normal rate, the loading screen for stairs is strangely fast but at least you can skip the loading door scenes in this version of Resident Evil and at least deserves a +1 Star.
In all honesty I would recommend just emulating the console versions of the game since you are missing out on content from the Director's Cut version.
Wish there were remapping options, but you can still use the ReBirth dlls, which is honestly a bit better, I get they were going for authenticity here, so it's fine, but more options are always good.
