A fun filled classic!
Great. Not for cutting age graphics but for its humour and concepts. Great soundtrack too.

Flawed but great!
The biggest issue with the game is the somewhat confusing level-design, I mean sometimes I don't know where to go at all and happen to find the right way by luck. Sometimes its a grey key on a grey floor, damn. The sewer and underground levels are probably the hardest. On the other side you have trailers park coupled with tornadoes and even a bowling alley or a outdoor movie theater, no lack of location to visit so I have to commend them on that. Next up is the difficulty, Blood has the same issue, there are these "hit-scan" enemies that can direct hit you from any distance with god-like reflexes and your health drains at an insane pace and this is with a modern control scheme.. holy moly! But then again it not easy walk in the park like Doom which did become very easy with WASD and strafing, but you have good difficulty and bad difficulty as in unfair. I mean you have these women in latex suits that have machine guns on their... breasts. And whenever you see those better have some explosives or one-shot weaponry around. There are plenty of more of these enemies so be warned. All in all it's not top-line good as Duke Nukem 3D that you can play over and over again but memorable enough to play through once in a while for shits and giggles. I would rate it 3.5/5 but gave it a 4/5 because of all the content in this gog.com version.

It's probably fun for the nostalgic.
I'm kind of embarrassed I didn't review this sooner, seeing as how I bought and played a handful of levels of it back in 2011... but I I'm going to just come right out and say it: I was immediately repulsed by the art design, the lack of volume control on the music (which itself wasn't pleasant, but I was willing to put up with for the sake of getting into the right "mindset" for the game), the large and mostly empty levels, the horrid and repetitive enemies, and the mind numbing amount of searching it takes to find anything in the game. That wandering search for keys kills any sort of pacing the game has. One of the reasons Blood, Duke 3D, and Heretic are so damnably fun is that they're fast paced, and it doesn't take a whole lot of wandering the levels to find keycards, keys or runes. They know better than to overstay their welcome. Redneck Rampage overstays its welcome in every single level, and my recollection of it is boring travel with a yellowish landscape interspersed with fighting exceptionally ugly sprites. All the while being assaulted with awful music so loud that it drowns out what little dialogue there is (you CAN turn it off however, but then... you're wandering in silence, which makes it even more boring). I can't recall much about the weapons, but that in itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. They most likely function as intended, but they didn't leave a lasting impression on me one way or another. One day, I may give Redneck Rampage another go, and see if my opinion changes, but I feel a lot like I wasted my money and my time with it, and absolutely nothing in the game managed to mitigate my antipathy toward it. I'm probably being too hard on Redneck Rampage. It likely never intended to be anything more than a mindless shooter, and for many, it undoubtedly fulfills that niche well. My problem is that I bought the game after seeing so many 5 star reviews and fond memories others related - but RR didn't live up to the expectations they created.

Objectively not great - I still had fun
I have to say I'm biased towards this sort of thing because there's just something I find appealing about the whole rural American setting. I love the music and the over-the-top accents and silly, oh so silly ideas. But the gist of it is that despite GOG doing a decent job with the DOSBox setup, the game has a whole heap of problems. Technical, first - now most of them like insanely loud music and no widescreen and terrible controls can be solved by using a source port (I used BuildGDX, but there's also NRedneck/Rednukem which is apparently even better), but I realize not everyone has the patience to mess around with stuff like this. So out of the box, it's functional, but not very player-friendly. Then, there's the actual gameplay, and other people have mentioned a ton of negative things so I'll just sum them up: the hit detection is TERRIBLE (projectiles go right through enemies sometimes), the enemies are often unfair (why do shotgun-toting enemies take off 20+ health from halfway across a field?!) and the level layouts are the wrong kind of complicated. In Duke Nukem, and Blood (other Build engine games), keys were big and visible and more importantly, color coded. Here, they just lie on the ground and they're all brown and hard to see. Luckily BuildGDX has a "coloured keys" feature so it shows keys in either blue, red or brown (and the doors likewise). Without this feature you have zero chance of figuring some of these levels out, and even with that in mind, I still needed a walkthrough for some levels. One of the later levels has a hidden hallway under a totally inconspicuous waterfall. It's not a secret, it's the MAIN PATH. Sucks. But with all that said, I still had tons of fun playing this game - like I said, the setting is fun and caricatured, the environments, while convoluted, pretty lively and atmospheric and the music is cool too. I loved it because I love redneck stuff, if you don't, there's not much game here to keep you interested.
