I had a blast! But...

...I can be a bit weird about these kinds of games. I very much enjoy slick, polished products with a fine-tuned game feel. My all-time favorites are just like that: whenever I pick them up and play, it's just satisfying on almost a tactile level. Redline, though, is nothing like this. It flies right into my other passion category: a charming, interesting mess, untangling which I get a giggle out of. It is a project people obviously poured tons of love and dedication into — and just as obvious is that they did that, fighting numerous obstacles along the way. Objectively, barely anything works here 100% correct: enemies are the sharpest of the sharpshooters that can get confused seemingly by a puff of metaphorical wind, the movement and shooting controls get both sticky and imprecise at every maneuver slightly more complicated than strafe-and-fire, the car combat frequently collapses into an awkward comedy sketch due to undercooked physics model — and that's when you *don't* encounter the numerous glitches. But I just can't bring myself to anger at such amounts of heart and fun. Running like crazy between screeching hostile buggies after destroying yours, being too slow and reckless when blowing up a generator. Mowing down disfigured cult-mutants, overpowered with several buff pickups, listening to your boss' snarky ham-liners. Ejecting enemy drivers with an "EMP rocket", salvaged from a minigunned-down plane, to hijack their rides and rush past the chaos towards escape. It is just constant barrage of janky awesomeness I crave sometimes. Brilliant, beautiful game. Think twice before trying. And if you do — embrace the fun-jank, and never look back.

OMG GOG! :D Awesome title!

For me, Redline is the game that made me quit Windows 98. It didn't work on Windows XP and I just had to play it again so I removed XP, reinstalled Win98 and went right back in the game. Unfortunately, after being cozy with the stability of Windows XP I felt Windows 98 was crap. I was wondering why I put up with it for so long, so I went back to XP and never looked back. But then I really missed Redline. And now, on GOG! OMG! I didn't see this coming. This is an awesome good old game where you can explore HUGE maps with tight places and wide open areas where you must run for your life or get sneaky and enter a turret to blast some unexpecting players running along. :)) This was so much fun that I'm really ecstatic to see it back alive. Thanks, GOG, and thanks to the developers! :D My only regret is I'm on vacation on a dial-up connection and I can't even touch the game. Wow! This boosted the happiness of my vacation! :)) I hope it will works well on Linux too. o/ YAY! o/

Talk About Ambitious!

This game is the definition of 'ahead of its time' but luckily it still handles fairly well! It's a toy box of concepts crammed into a uniquely 90s post apocalypse where everyone wears leather, big red mutants tout chain guns and there is always grunge. It's completely over the top but it's charming in it's escapism. Your melee weapon is a rotary saw attached to a gun barrel! That's pretty metal. Apart from the stylish theme this is an FPS that can turn into a driving game almost on demand. If you find a working vehicle walk into it and suddenly you have a relatively smooth transition from first person shooter to car combat. You can pull off drifts, aim your weapons, and plenty of foes that would take tons of bullets to down splatter when you hit them at full speed. I love the detail of switching to FPS driver's view complete with the hero's hand steering the car. The FPS sections are smooth and responsive with all your weapons stored in one centralized gun you gather ammo for the various functions of. You've got bullets, rockets, a sniper rifle...it's all the old faithfuls, and it's never not fun to blast the surprisingly varied gangs and mutants you face. Slight issues abound. The initial control scheme is wonky: arrow keys with Control as your fire button. You can change the keys thankfully and you can even hold the mouse button and steer by moving it around, but this too is a bit slippy. Dodging is the only real strategy to on foot fights and it's not so easy when you can barely lock on. There's a few precision targets too you need to free-aim to hit which might be frustrating. Also I was frequently annoyed by the screen-filling white flashes following an explosion. It doesn't even mean your'e injured: it was just a way to hammer home the shock of the blast...and it didn't quite work. Still, this is a fun game, and ambitious game, and one you can tell heart and soul went into!

Interesting blend of FPS and driving

Redline was for its time a rather unique game that blended FPS and driving together in a post apocalyptic future. The gun that you're using is actually several weapons in one, it switches barrels and even has a saw installed that you can use for dealing with the freaks you will encounter, you can even use the saw to fly around in multiplayer. Also each vehicle you will be driving has its unique set of weapons, some of which include mine laying for dealing with pesky punks on your tail as well as side weapons for those drive by shootings.

Super awesome overlooked game!

This game was mind blowing at the time, you can fight from your car or get out and fight on foot FPS style. Highjack opponents cars as well. The environments were so huge without any loading and there was nothing else pushing the limits like this at the time. So much of the environment blows up when shot too, so fun. I was excited about the game before it even came out because of some hype in magazines, but then it just faded away and I forgot about it until it popped up on the store shelves at a discount price one day, $20 so I didn't know what to expect but it looked so cool even on the box. Parts of the game do feel a bit rushed like they didn't get the finishing touches they wanted but there is nothing else like it. Necrodome was similar but more of a Doom engine type game. The missions really take you on an adventure too, they vary a lot. I love the characters and voice acting. I hate that there will be so many people that miss out on this game, it never got the attention it deserved. This is one of my top games ever for sure!
