Big departure for the series

Red Faction 1 was a groundbreaking (pun intended) game for its time. Red Faction II is such a radical departure from what made the first game great that it feels like it's part of an entirely different series. It plays like any number of dime-a-dozen late 90s FPS games. Definitely a pass. Red Faction 1 and Red Faction Guerrilla are the only games in the series that are must play, while Armaggedon is a decent game but not a must buy.

I want that 6 hours of my life back!

It cannot get much worse. Ported from the PS2, the levels manage to be a convoluted mess of linearity (YES, that is possible!!!). The graphics are so ugly, with blocky charakters and stale textures, it cannot hold up to RF1 by ten miles off. The wepaons don't have any impact, the mech- and vehicle-section are totally overpowered and thus boring. The Enemy AI is super-dump and the story is braindead. There is no reason to play this game - even if it is just 6 hours long.

Maybe shouldn't have been

I played this when it first came out years ago on the Gamecube and recently re-bought it out of nostalgia. This entry into the Red Faction series feels off story wise and seems slightly influenced by the original Deus Ex. Graphics are/were ok for the time, although I'm kind of fond of the art style, and direction which reminds me of UT '03. My main issues stem from how short and bare the story is despite have an interesting setting that is dystopian science fiction, and it has nothing to do with the rest of the series almost as if the developers wanted a different game, but were forced to make a sequel to the original. This game also has a cemented legacy that despite having geomod 2.0 it's hardly used beyond finding secret caches of ammo. So if you're fishing for a retro FPS to burn maybe 4 or 5 hours with virtually no story enjoy but if you're looking for more look somewhere else.

I used to have original copy that I bought in my teen years. It's not as signature as RF1, but it's still overall a good game.

Pretty Fun

Red Faction 2 improves on the first one in almost every way. While it's not the best game in the series in my opinion, it's still worth playing through.
