Red Faction
Description
In Red Faction, you play Parker, a weary miner who works for the corrupt Ultor Corporation. You reside on Mars, sometime in the future, and when a plague spreads through the mining community, some of the Ultor employees uncover a massive conspiracy. Thus ensues a battle by a group of lowly workers, headed up by the educated Parker, to expose the deadly experiments Ultor has unleashed onto its work force.
Red Faction was a very big leap forward in the FPS genre. It introduced many new technical features such as location-based damage system, real-time skeletal deformation, advanced physics simulation, destructible environment and more. The unprecedented (at the time) interaction with the environment creates a very strong feeling of immersion that is very impressive even by today's standards.

Not bad but not great
I played through this months ago with no prior experience of the game, and I found it an okay experience for the age and quality of game it is. The gameplay itself is generally alright, albeit sometimes janky. The enemies can be a bit of a pain as well, and the forced stealth section too. The most annoying gameplay issue is that there's a bomb puzzle near the end you have to solve to finish the game, but it's completely RNG-based and resets each time you reset or reload. It's the last thing you have to do before the last cutscene plays. The destructible environments are pretty awesome in the places they show up, which is less often than you might think, but there are mods to make more places destructible. Probably the most interesting thing about Red Faction is that feature. The story isn't perfect, but it's acceptable. The main problem with the story comes down to the fact that it sets up a specific plot thread about a virus that, if I recall, doesn't get resolved. After that, the story kinda forgets about it and shifts towards another plot thread that does actually get resolved. Even with all that, though, I'm not going to call it a bad game. As someone who never grew up with this game, I understand what it means to people who did play it then and how much it means to them. I'm not trying to badmouth the game in any way, but give an opinion from a non-nostalgic point of view. But you should give this game a try yourself and form your own opinion if you haven't played it, the least you need to do so is a mod/source port called "Dash Faction". I hope you found my review helpful and/or informative in some way.

Game breaking bugs make it unplayable
Unfortunately have to give this 2 stars, it would've been a solid 4 stars if I could finish it. I got stuck in two separate places after starting the game twice, once with the submarine explosion bug and once with a double door elevator. People have already posted clips of these bugs on youtube so no sense showing it. It was on sale so what the heck, the concept and setting is nice. Shame about the bugs and (so far) level design not taking full advantage of the destructible environment gimmick.

A Really good shooter
Just really good, I would seriously recommend it for some pure late 90s early 2000s shooting adventure, It does get a tad hard by the end, but it's manageable, I absolutely loved it!

Rockin' Good Fun - Spoiler Alert!
This is based on the steam version, but I will buy here anyway. Well worth it. I put off playing this game for so long, but I'm glad that I recently played it and never looked back. I used the Dash Faction mod, which makes the game look fantastic, has widescreen among other options. As a shooter it is so much fun. Destructible terrain, a decent array of weaponry, a varied level design, vehicles, monsters, challenging enemies and bosses, stealth and a decent storyline. The best thing I liked about this game was the way it gradually ramped up the difficulty with harder enemies and bosses the further you progressed. However, there is one fly in the ointment that stops this being a 5 star review. The end of the game. You run a gauntlet of rock hard enemies to get to the final boss, which is then a collosal fight in itself. You finally defeat the boss and then as the last action of the game get presented by a memory puzzle, which is also on a countdown timer. Why someone thought this was a good idea, god only knows? Anyway, if you like early 2000s shooters like I do, buy it, you'll love it!
