One of the genre's best

Own this game on steam, and it is FANTASTIC. The problem with the modern space sim, is that it finds itself caught up in trying to cater to two different audiences. There are people who just want SPAAACE and all that it entails. Those guys who like to fly around and look at nebulas and stuff. Then there are people who just want a sandbox to play around in. Rebel Galaxy steps it up a notch. It may seem streamlined and 'dumbed' down in comparison to the standing heavyweights like Starpoint Gemini 2, X3:Terran Conflict and Freelancer, but it outshines them all in one aspect. FUN. SPG2 couldn't get immersion right. X3:TC couldn't get entertainment and story right. Freelancer couldn't quite get challenge or ease of use right. Rebel Galaxy knocks it out of the park. Where Evochron Mercenary felt lifeless, this game has it in SPADES. Talking to bartenders, other pilots, and your enemies never gets old. Its similar to the X series where you can just hail other pilots and discuss trades, events, or things like that. Getting a tip on a sweet deal on the edge of the star system never gets old. The game has procedurally generated galaxies, and each system feels BIG. I think they feel alot more alive and interesting then the ones in X3 or SPG2, mainly because it feels like SPACE. Those titles had so much STUFF in their systems I honestly felt like I was in an overcrowded fish tank. Combat is enjoyable, but restricted to a horizontal playing field. You feel like a car...until you master combat. Being in a massive capital ship you have turrets, broadside cannons, and various other things. I don't think it would be as fun on a 3D playing field. Graphically its very good looking, and the story is actually quite good! It rivals Freelancer's from what I've seen, and it blows SPG2 and X3's out of the water. My only worry is a lack of buyable ships (Easily under 20, depending on what factions you work with) and a lack of factional gameplay. GET. THIS GAME!

You are Spike Spiegel and oh wait...

I don't remember how I got this game honestly, my backlog is chaotic and I skipped it so far because I though a space game that is retained withing a 2D plane sounded sad. Anyway I unearthed my sidewinder joystick and wanted to check out games that could make use of it so I installed Rebel Galaxy to give it a shot. While the joystick was of no use because of the 2D plane of the game (honestly I don't recall if it worked at all, I tried a lot of games that day), the game itself won me in an instant! Somehow I got a feeling that I play Freelancer as the crew of Cowboy Bebop, the music helped a ton here and the gameplay is extremely like Freelancer just limited to the 2D plane. You have a main story and you are free to do as you please, explore, bounty hunting, trading, even mining (barely worth it honestly but sometimes you get something nice like diamonds or salt), escort missions, deliveries. Fighting is a bit dumped down but keep in mind the ships available to the player are not some small space ship ideal for dogfighting but larger classes so it makes sense to have a fighting style like that. The interesting part is you can just go pirate if you want to, while this may interfere with the main story as you will be turned hostile to stations that you need to visit, it is still an interesting aspect and there are neutral and outlaw stations that you can use to trade, repair and buy ships or upgrades. For ships there are some options, not as much as I could like but considering the small studio I can say they are enough and have a lot of customization options (although not visually but engines, shields, guns etc) also nice to be able to upgrade computer systems like better scanners, repair bots etc. Extra bonus for the Cowboy Bebop fans, the starting ship's type is named Hummerhead ;) You can make alliances with guilds, that provide some bonus missions with better rewards and upgrade parts that are not available elsewhere. I like it a lot, so I say go get it!

Solid, if uninspiring

TLDR - More of a 3.5 than 4. This is a simplified space sim, the kind of game to ease people into the genre. Great music, little depth ------ I don't remember when I bought it, but I know I must've paid around 17 BRL (~4 USD). After sitting on my list for ages, I've finally gave this game a shot. * I cannot stress how GOOD the soundtrack is - Western Rock through and through; * Navigation is 2D. You can't go "up" or "down", only enemy fighters do that; * Combat is "naval", it's just about turning your ship around to get broadside shots and distributing damage to your shields. Turrets auto fire while in broadside; * Cargo space is super limited, as are commodities for sale - at least judging from the ships available in the first sector, max cargo space you'll have is 47; * Commodities' prices fluctuate, as several events might happen in the system, some of which you can interfere, like a war between 2 stations. I like this, as it makes the universe feel alive. Also, days pass while you're flying, though there doesn't seem to be any way to keep track of that; * Most missions are "go there, kill pirates" with a different reason to do so; * Default keybinds make little sense. "E" is a key that does almost everything: increase engine power, activate warp drive, grab cargo, receive incoming calls. Why? The game was probably made with the PS4 in mind first, but even there it'd be horrible to press "X" to do all those things * UI in general leaves a lot to be desired. There's no speedometer while flying. Can't go to options from inside a space station, you have to exit it to open the menu. The only way to see your standing with the local factions is by opening the command wheel while in flight I'm 6 hours in and haven't jumped out of the first system yet, so I can't really comment on the story.

Rock On

Never completed the game, had a blast while playing it though - same as I'd say for a lot of games I own. In all honesty, I'm putting in this 5.0 rating because after checking why this game was only rating a 3.9/5, I found a metric crapload of 1/5 ratings where the actual description was of a 3/5 or even 4/5 game. There were an equal number of half-arsed non-reviews which also threw in a 1/5. It looks like this game got review-bombed to push it below the 4/5 rating it actually deserves.

Great space arcade

First and foremost: this is an arcade game in spaace!, not a space sim. All large ship float on the plane of the solar system, and engages other ships, mostly, in broadside battles. This makes it a bit difficult to target strikecraft zipping above and below with your main guns, but not overly annoying. The gameplay is fun, reactive and rewarding. I always felt that my actions had consequences, that my guns did something in a battle, and that my tactics helped or doomed me. For instance, you can choose artillery-style main guns and pick off enemies from a distance. Mount them on a fast ship, and you can divide your enemies and destroy them individually. Ships and upgrades feel different and powerful: you can actually switch from broadside-based fighting to a turret-based style with the help of different ships. Holding the vulnerable back of slow enemies and using mining lasers and ion cannon turrets to blow up the reactor makes me feel smrt! and all tactical like. Due to how fun battles are, collecting money for ships and upgrades doesn't feel like a grind, but like a reward in itself. Add to it a great soundtrack (and the option to add your own music), which starts and stops at appropriately atmospheric moments, this game is a continuous bundle of joy.
