Ever fancied piloting a battlestar?

I have to say, I am really enjoying this game. While it can get monotonous, if you are into this kind of a space shooting / freelancing, you won't mind the monotony. One thing that takes some getting used to is that the game doesn't allow you to change your position vertially - but that's probably good, since otherwise you would never be able to line up your broadsides. The game is really polished, has some pretty decent voiceover and a range of activities to keep you occupied while you're not following the storyline, pretty impressive ship designs and fun gameplay. You can trade, but it likely won't ever be your main source of income - I would say that the missions should probably pay a little more than they do, because as it is it takes a lot of grinding to move forward with upgrading your equipment and ship. Pros: You get to fly at least a frigate, with destroyers in the future, the shooting and destruction of enemy ships is satisfying, the story doesn't seem half bad, the graphics are really pretty and it can be pretty addictive Cons: Grinding, lack of proper tutorial, takes quite a bit of getting used to in terms of not being able to move vertically. I would say overall 9/10 but I'd give it 5 stars because it's more a 9 towards 10 than 8.

At least it was free

It was free. I wouldn't buy it though. The spaceship is stuck in a flat plane, which causes the fights to be a boxed kill and ruins exploration possibilities. Usually when a game is this restrictive it has a story. The terrible controls and obscure interface ensure I won't get to see that story. BUT it was free. (opinion only) - The redneck music is loud and annoying and takes away from the atmosphere.

Misses the Mark

I really want to love Rebel Galaxy, and I suppose I do on some level. It's a space trading and fighting game in the vein of Freelancer that looks great, runs great and does a lot of things right. Trading in particular is an amusing diversion, especially when you choose to engage in smuggling and wind up fleeing from overzealous enforcers. The story so far (a few missions in) is passable, and might yet prove interesting enough to keep me playing, and the cowboy-esque sci-fi universe is charming. Sadly, the naval-style combat and lack of Z-axis player movement are massive sources of frustration—very near dealbreaking frustration, if I'm totally honest. As a result of this design choice, the camera is highly restricted and behaves in a wonky manner when tracking enemies. Smaller varieties of baddies (the majority) are perfectly able to zip around your floating brick of a ship in three dimensions, as well as attack from above and below. If the developers had set the game on a water planet, with ships and submarines instead of spacecraft, maybe things would be different, but the science geek in me just can't get over the "space is an ocean" trope. I tentatively recommend Rebel Galaxy on the basis of everything except the movement and combat. Sadly, movement and combat permeate almost every aspect of the game, and these things never improve no matter how good the rest of the experience is.

No edits to who shot first in this

I'm not gonna try and provide a more helpful than the others. This game has reviews. I'm really only reviewing the game cause I liked it so much. Freelancer was one of my favourite games of all time. I love Chris Roberts' space game. This is a good stand-in for a sequel to Freelancer. It doesn't have as much depth as I'd like, and it suffers that a bit, especially from a content perspective (lack of models, VO. but I will say there was more VO than I expected going in.). It also suffers its proc. I've never been the biggest fan of proc. It tends to be boring. Only one system in my proc-galaxy was immediately really very different from the rest. It doesn't have the stark regional differentiation of Freelancer. Also the lacks the funky frontier system. So the proc element adds to the existing lack of content. What it does get right though, is feel. Plus it's heavily southern cultured. Almost like a Borderlands in space. But it does get all of that that sort of swashbuckling fly by the seat of my pants atmosphere that made Freelancer and Privateer so great. The aliens are great. Like any of the best stuff from Star Wars. The ships are fun. The weapons are good. The gameplay is fine. I didn't find the combat repetitive as others have mentioned. The handling is fine and I didn't really miss the game being locked to 2d. They in fact play with it a little bit as they have made the plane deviate so sometimes you're flying up a little high and sometimes you're flying a little low, so you do get that three-dimensional scene when you look at things sometimes. The trading I would say is a weak spot. The game clearly wasn't designed around it. It's serviceable and can be fun if that's your thing in these games but it's not practical when compared to doing missions and I never found any reliable route save one route, one way. I like the game. But I'm biased on this one. 10/10 would do business again.

Pirates and Unexpected Nostalgia

Did you ever watch Firefly and think to yourself, "Man I wish they made a video game out of this?" Well, Rebel Galaxy is that video game. If you don't get that reference, let me outline the feeling of Rebel Galaxy for you. The moment you load up the game, you are hit with the opening notes of a country song out of a dark western. It sets the mood for a space frontier game where you do what you have to in order to survive and make a living. Outrun space pirates and local militia alike and strike unstable alliances as you make your own way in the galaxy as a trader, a scavenger, a smuggler, a pirate, a miner or a bit of everything After a brief introduction you are given a ship and purpose and from there on out, you do whatever you see fit. Follow the main storyline or just set out for the stars, doing odd jobs at remote space stations. You start off with a dingy cargo ship that barely holds up in combat and through earning credits, you work your way up to massive battleships that strike fear into the heart of your enemies. While you can plow straight through the game's storyline, ignoring all the optional missions and contracts, you will be tight for credits in terms of repairing and upgrading your ship. The upgrade system is deep and interesting, requiring you to remember where to acquire certain parts and leaving room for slightly different playstyles. Do you want to be a fast devil, dodging through combat and engaging in borderline dogfights? Or would you rather captain a slow moving hunk of metal with enough firepower to wipe out a small star system? While the game suffers due to the fact that all movement is done only on the X axis, exploration and combat still feels satisfying. Additionally, the game's storyline is not particularly strong or innovative. It is a fun experience and has interesting ideas, but holds little to no surprises for avid gamers. Recommended for any scoundrel who ever wanted to roam the open skies as a free man.
