Detective Michael Stone arrives in the small town of Pineview to assist the local police force with a seemingly simple case - A couple is found dead in their kitchen. The locals believe it to be a case of murder-suicide, their speculation fueled by rumors of the turbulent nature of the couple's relationship.
Is it just small-town gossip, or is there some truth to the rumors?
Help Detective Stone, assisted by the driven and empathetic Amy Blunt, discover the truth behind Chris and Diane's story. But be warned: the further he pursues the case, the more his own past shall come back to haunt him. And the closer his sanity will be pushed to the edge.
Rainswept is an adventure game - A murder mystery dealing with themes of love, relationships and unresolved trauma. It's being developed by Frostwood Interactive, a studio found by Armaan Sandhu. The soundtrack is being composed by Micamic, the composer behind Harvester Games' excellent 2012 indie title "The Cat Lady"
As Detective Stone, explore the beautiful town of Pineview, talk to the many locals, interview suspects, dig through the victims' pasts and try to piece together the story behind Chris and Diane's brutal deaths.
Also play as Chris and experience his story with Diane - joining them in key moments of their lives together as they meet for the first time, get to know each other and fall in love.
Featuring:
An emotionally captivating story set in an immersive and atmospheric game world
A wide cast of characters with deep histories, meaningful motivations and distinct personalities
First of all, I bought it on steam because I didn´t know when excactly Rainswept would be released on GOG and I COULDN`T WAIT ANY LONGER ;(
Played the demo. Liked the demo.
Same with the finished game here. The whole story isn´t very special at all but the way its wrapped up makes it interesting and has a very personal touch which makes it unique.
The conversations still feels like someone would hold a monologue but that doesnt bother me that much.
I really like the art-style of this game. The scene with the firework looked awesome just like the talk on the island while the sun goes down slowly. Really beautiful to watch.
Didn´t regret buying this game at any time at all.
Edit: Fixed
Rainswept tells a compelling story about humanity, love and loss. While following (more than directing) the investigations, you learn about the life of the local inhabitants and the main protagonist. From real life to dream sequence, Rainswept proposes a series of reflexion about the meaning of life.
It is really an experience to be enjoyed one chunk at a time rather than binjeplayed.
The real downside is that Rainswept is barely a game since the player and her decisions do not really matter in the end.
Rainswept was about was I expected: an artsy experience with mild adventure elements, lasting for a few hours. The in-game music was surprisingly good and partly compensated the total lack of voice acting and partial lack of sound effects (only very few and very basic ones). The controls were unexpectedly ragged though. Not everything can be done with the mouse and the keyboard controls are erratic and badly implemented. Like you can't close the task window by pressing "N" again (just flickers off/on). Or the "Z/X" keys to flip pages in the journal are mapped by system locale settings (what kind of game would even to that???), so on a QWERTZ keyboard, the two keys are way apart. All of that just shows a shocking lack of professionalism or "don't care" attitude.
Besides, while I kinda liked the polygonal graphics style, the low resolution textures used here and there somewhat ruined that look at times. Also, the comical walking/running animation didn't fit the sober mood. Finally, this story of guilt and loss was told so many times now that it's not really making the game stand out on its own.
Still, I was entertained pretty well for a couple of hours, the dialogues were mostly well written, the ending was agreeable and I got it on sale, so I give it three stars.
* I received my copy of the game from the developer for free. *
‘Rainswept’ is a highly interactive visual novel developed by the one-person studio Frostwood Interactive. I call it a visual novel because it’s not built around solving puzzles. There was only one instance in my 5 hours of playing that I was actually solving one. The game is highly interactive because instead of simply clicking through the story like in a VN, you do need to move your character, and interact with different people and objects.
The focus of ‘Rainswept’ is telling a strong story. It starts off slow, but becomes more engaging as you unravel the mystery of two victims’ deaths in a small town. The dialogues between characters feel real, and the story deals with serious issues like relationship, abuse, loneliness and suicide with maturity. You can tell the developer has put a lot of thought into crafting a story that treats all these matter with care.
It’s a bit disappointing then that ‘Rainswept’ feels incongruent overall. The art, while eye-catching, does not seem to fit the sombre mood and tone of the story. Similarly, the ways with which the characters move can be unfittingly comical. The private, tranquil moments of the game work really well though, especially those featuring skies of stars or fireworks. Those were my favourite.
In fact, the detective story of ‘Rainswept’ seems to serve more as a vehicle to the more poignant, at times relatable story of the victims. Much of the detective work -- mostly travelling from A to B to C -- feels like busy work. I’d love to play a game that simply focuses on the tumultuous relationship between the victims.
But considering ‘Rainswept’ was mainly developed a single person, it’s quite an accomplished piece of work. While the art, interface/user input design, and coding could use a bit more polish, the story is engaging and well-written enough that I want to recommend ‘Rainswept’ to players who enjoy good narratives in games.
Rainswept is a great mystery game. The story kept me interested all the way through. It has some decent twists and turns and good character development. It is fairly linear though. There are dialogue options but they aren’t optional in the sense of choosing a response. You don’t choose which questions to ask for instance, you just ask all of them. You get to choose in which order to question people but that doesn’t change the course of events. You have some point and click bits where you have to find certain items but nothing that is really hard or a puzzle. Basically there isn’t much game play to Rainswept. It is more of a point and click kinetic visual novel. That being said the quality of the story makes it worthwhile. The graphics is not quite pixel graphics but a similar style. There was good detail on things like plants; gore; objects; furniture; etc. There is a nice seaside vista as well. One thing that was weird was the legs of all the people looked really thin. The music was well done but there were a few stretches when the game was in total silence and they felt out of place as the rest of the game has at least some ambient noise to it. One issue I did have was that the boxes that show up when you can interact with something would only show up when you stand in a certain spot. You could be one inch too close or too far and they wouldn’t be able to be clicked on. Also there was one moment where a fire fighter finds a cigarette but and proclaims this proves arson. I’m no arson expert but generally that proves nothing and if anything leans more towards an accidental fire. One logic flaw I also saw was that in order to have you walking all over town your car finds itself in needs of repair. My issue with this is simply that it makes no sense. Are you telling me this police force has no cars to spare ? I get that you’re supposed to explore the town and having a car would defeat that but it is a flimsy excuse.
