Rage of Mages is a pretty decent RPG with a nice graphical style to it and a fairly interesting plot. I played it around when it was first released, and can safely say I wasn't disappointed. While not a genre-shattering masterpiece by any stretch of the word, RoM has a lot of variety. There are plenty of spells and dozens of item types to equip your heroes with, not to mention a broad selection of enemy types to battle. Missions are fairly well scripted, with lots of interesting events and unconventional pathways to explore in order to reach your assigned goals. If you're a fan of this kind of RPG, RoM and its sequel are quite enjoyable experiences. Just don't expect them to set your world on fire.
Before, reviewing the game let me start that I had NO problems with mouse scroll on my Windows 7 machine. I believe this issue has been solved for RoM1.
This is surprisingly fun RPG game. It is more tactical than quest-driven. The gameplay consists of completing quest missions where each quest involves exploring a single map and completing the required task. Tasks vary from slaying a beast, through freeing a captured person, to finding an artifact. At each map you control a number of heroes and mercenaries and pretty much always you need to battle your way through the map (though often you can avoid some tough battles by sneaking behind the enemies back). After completing each map (i.e., quest) you get back to the town where you can purchase items, hire mercenaries and then get a new quest. There are no dialog options and the only choices you make are whether to accept or skip a mission, and buying/selling equipment.
Despite the limited RPG elements (lack of free-exploration, limited quest options, lack of dialogues) I found RoM surprisingly fun. Exploring the maps. combating enemies and finding new items was fun though often brutally difficult. Thus, you should be warned, the game is not easy and sometimes might feel discouragingly difficult. Though I think it is one of the advantages of the game that it does not hold your hand.
My only problem is that towards the end of the game whether one can complete the mission depends on hiring the right group of mercenaries and sometimes you only find out whether your mercenaries are "right" at the very end of the map after investing several hours. This can be somewhat frustrating. Thus, it might be advisable to have a quick glance at the online guide to see whether you need to hire mercenaries (and which ones) or not once you are nearing the end of the game.
All in all, this is surprisingly fun game. It does not beat Black Isle classics but it can definitely keep a player entertained.
I have a windows 10 Pro x64
After reading rewieves I doubted to buy this game, but i decided to take a chance.
It works perfectly, no freez on video, no fast scrolling, no blinking menus.
I reccomend it to all.
1. Buy and download Rage of Mages.
2. Download latest release of DxWnd.
3. In DxWnd use File -> Import -> locate folder Dxwnd unpacked to -> exports -> Rage of Mages.
4. Modify appeared entry (right click, modify) to correct path to ROM.exe.
5. In game folder move ddraw.dll to ddraw.dll.bak.
6. Launch and enjoy.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. Most things simply work, though there might be a deal-breaker issue in the mix. For example, a high desktop resolution making the game a small box (you will have to squint to read anything), terrible magic item generation at the shop (gives you mostly end-game-useless trash over and over again), the items not showing on map forcing you to dilligently go through the whole map to have a chance at finding anything and plenty of UI issues such as not being able to quickly to relocate the view to the selected character. It seems a lot of the content-side 'bad' things are a part of the style of the game. E.g. you can go and brainlessly mash your dudes against the enemies and be fine while dying very easily is a part of game. Though the end game with major enemies killing you with a couple of hits despite the gear makes the experience a bit sucky unless you play an archer and you have to to be able to hit fliers. The game plays much better than the much later Diablo II and Divine Divinity titles. You can tell this game inspired the vendor system in Diablo II, much like Veil of Darkness probably inspired the Horadric Cube item combining there. RoM is simply a Good Old Game. I remember how even the local, normally-super-cynical game critics gave the game a little over 80 percent, a similar rating they gave to the smash-hit Warcraft II. With first-hand experience, it is easy to understand why. It simply plays well, like a game should. Sure it forced me to replay the last level from over 95 percent completion because how crappily it was coded.
