So... you want to be a hero?

What a great series! Lots of atmosphere, humor, and replayability. To this day, not many games have the option to carry over a character from one game to the next – let alone 5 games! Many fond memories of this series from my past and, replaying them recently, I think they still hold up – even Dragon Fire! Some notes for new or returning users: I would just download and use SCUMMVM for running 1 through 4 versus the included DOSBox emulation. You’ll have a nicer experience overall with some nice built-in MIDI emulation for an authentic soundscape. 3 and 4 have very helpful and necessary fan patches from AshLancer and 5 has a patch called QFG5Patcher from ubipred that help these run a bit more bug free and friendly. At some point in 5, to load a save, I would have to start a new game and load from that point to avoid crashing on first load, but I was able to get through to the finale of the series. And, as others have mentioned, I would highly recommend seeking out the AGD remake of 2 – especially if you want a more cohesive/standardized run through the series without the parser entries (which are still great in their own right). The remake is also so old now that SCUMMVM is the better choice for running that now, too. 4 is my favorite, but they are all charming in their own right and well worth the effort (and frustration) to complete. Thank you to the Cole’s and Sierra for this wonderful piece of gaming history.

Absolute Classics!

I unashamadly love these games! Spent so many hours playing QFG 1 on my 486 that playing now I can breeze through most of the puzzles. Loved the fact that you can actually choose your skills and spend time levelling them up - I think that was one of the first times I saw that in a video game - and the levelling is well done too, in that it's basically practise makes perfect. If you want to improve at climbing, go climb stuff. Currently replaying again as a hybrid (Thief + magic + parry) and happily burglarising homes, killing locals, and generally spending more time messing around and levelling than actually doing anything heroic - luckily the game doesn't trigger events until you activate them so there's really no rush. Don't think I ever finished QFG 4 so this time around I'm finally going to tick that box! But yes, buy these games if you enjoy puzzles / RPG's / Classics / Sierra (they are way better than Kings Quest)

This is what started...

my love of thieves. While the fighter in this game is really good in doing what he is supposed to do he really needs to wait for the second part of the series to actually get it's own flavor. Thief and Magic User have their fun in part one already. So go play with Erasmus for becoming the most powerful mage this world has seen or join the thieves guild and have fun breaking in into houses, evading some of the funniest traps and ways to die in game history. The sneaking around, learning to climb, dag nabbit. I just loved everything thief in those games. I used to mix classes all up though since you could cast as both a thief and a fighter if you put some points in magic at the character generation, just so I had maxed out stats at the end of each game. Class is basically just what lets you accumulate points to perfect the game score, which I never actually managed somehow. What I love about the games is the amount of love that went into them. The not so tedious training you have to do. The story of each of them. The ability to transfer your character, that you worked so hard on, over to the next game. The latter drew me to Mass Effect back then, but they really messed that part up. I wish more single player titles were building on each like this series did. Gods I still can hear the music, when I look at the pictures above. Incredible. Overall, incredible series. Well worth buying.

My All-Time Fav Game Series

QFG2 is my favorite game of all-time. QFG1 is my second favorite game of all time. It saddens me that the series actually became worse over time, with bugs (that have since been patched, I believe) and trying out new technologies that made the games look cool, but took away from them a bit, I felt. Even so, I'd put any QFG game up against most modern games. The series just rocks.

Outstanding (if flawed) series

These games - particularly the first two - are some of my all time favorites. I find myself going back to them almost every year - always intent on completing all 5, but always stymied by some kind of tech issue along the way. It will truly be an epic accomplishment if GOG has resolved all the bugs these games were littered with. The first two games are remarkably innovative and do a delightful job of balancing light-hearted adventure with more solemn and scary moments. Corey Cole's writing is top notch, and there is a palpable sense of fun that just oozes through the gameplay. Things went down-hill later on - particularly the perfunctory third game, which feels totally incomplete. The fourth was a decent return to form, though it felt a little too much like it was trying too hard to recapture the old times. The fifth was ok - a pretty solid conclusion. The real shame is there were never any further games in the series, nor any games since that have really successfully recaptured the spirit of the original 2. If you do pick this up, make sure you pick up the outstanding VGA remake of the 2nd game by AGD: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/qfg2/ Truly a labor of love that improves remarkably on the original. Anyway despite the gripes, this series is still pretty bitching
