Histoire

Suite à l'assassinat du chef des Stroggs, l'armée de la Terre a relancé son attaque sur leur planète natale hostile. Vous incarnez le caporal de la marine Matthew Kane du groupe d'élite Rhino Squad, et votre mission est de mener l'invasion. Au cours de cette guerre désespérée pour la survie de l'humanité face à un ennemi impitoyable, vous pourriez découvrir que le seul moyen de le vaincre... est de le rejoindre.

Good, Needs Manual Config Adjustment

And it even has a better shotgun than Doom 3, and isn't an RNG Rubber Chicken. Once again, whoever is in charge of patching games for GoG couldn't be arsed to modify a few lines of code to fix an issue with the game not knowing what to do with GPUs with more than 1GB of ram. Game still runs mostly fine, also it chugged in a few areas. Only crashed once I think, hilariously while looking at a dead soldier with a very indifferent look on his face after shooting him once. That dead soldier was so indifferent to being dead, it crashed the game. I think they should have played up the player being stroggified thing by giving the player different powers and abilities, as well as upgrading them, like a super sprint, super jump, or a devastating melee attack, or bullet time, etc. Well, at least you do upgrade some of your weapons throughout the campaign. Also, *some* of your weapons have flashlights on them, unlike Doom 3. The Pistol and the SMG. This is something Doom 3 should have done, have flashlight on a weapon or two, but have it be a smaller light radius than the handheld flashlight, letting you use some guns in the dark, but still leaving you vulnerable if you want to use a more powerful weapon without a flashlight.

Pretty good, but not what you may expect

Quake IV is solid. The level design is decent, the guns all pack a great punch, the enemies are varied and fun to shoot at. It really aims for that feeling of comradery between you and your squadmates, and fighting alongside them is never a burden. The campaign is just the right length and renews itself when it needs to: for instance, you get to play a vehicular section from time to time, and while these aren’t great, they still feel like a breath of fresh air. A remarkable job has been done on the atmosphere. It looks great for its era, with a ton of elaborate environments, solid animations and really badass uses of colors and lighting effects. It’s also surprisingly scary at times, with a lot of dark rooms and really disturbing body horror. One issue is that it’s a very literal corridor shooter: not only is it extremely linear, but most combats take place in confined spaces, which often makes dodging projectiles and melee attack more difficult than it should. The boss fights are kind of mediocre, and I’m also told the multiplayer was meh - but nowadays it’s mostly a game you play for the campaign anyway. But Quake IV’s biggest sin is probably that... it does not really care about being a Quake game. It’s a sequel to Quake II, but its aesthetic is very different: the atmosphere is less “heavy metal”, the technologies don’t have the same appearance, and none of the monsters look like their Q2 counterparts. Most importantly, it largely disregards the elements that made its predecessors so fun, like the reloading-free gunplay, the ludicrous running speed and the complex level design. It instead focuses on being a “Halo-esque” sci-fi FPS. Fortunately, the second half feels more like a fast-paced boomer shooter! In short, much like Doom 3, your appreciation of Quake IV will largely depend on your ability to ignore its lack of connection to the series. Otherwise, well, you have here a skippable but very fun FPS that definitely deserves to be reevaluated as such!

Mediocre

This game gets off to a very slow start. I almost abandoned it because the first 30% of the game is painful. The environments are cramped, weapons are weak, movement speed is SLOW, enemies are bullet sponges and the levels are linear and heavily scripted. After a few hours things improve quite a bit, you get a significant movement speed upgrade, and the game starts throwing a lot more action at you. The game should have been like this from the start. From that point on the game is an entertaining but unremarkable corridor shooter. The levels are still cramped and linear, weapons still weak. You never get the fast action shooter feeling, you will end up doing a lot of door/corner peeking because of all the hit scan enemies and homing rockets, and you will mostly face a maximum of 2-3 enemies at any one time. Based on gameplay alone I would give this game two stars. However, the visuals are absolutely fantastic. It is almost worth playing just because of how good it looks, there was a ton of effort put into the lighting and ambient animations of the environments, screenshots do not do the game justice. Sometimes you see an enemy's shadow coming around the corner before you know there's anyone there, it looks great and is an experience you just don't find in many other games.

The Best Quake Game ever (for me)

I don't rate games here too much but it's my duty to do it with Quake 4. It's one of my favourite games in all my life, and I'm sure it will be forever. The current rating (3.9 at the moment of writing this) is an offense for me. This game has to be rated 4.5 at least! The weapons, the physics, the game mechanics, the monsters, the history, the speed, and... The STROGGIFICATION PROCESS. ARE AWESOMMEEE!!! If you love first person shooters like Doom you HAVE to play this game if you haven't. Trust me, not doing it is a mortal sin!
