Privateer 2: The Darkening

I know this is a 30 year old game, but this is a very broken version of it. Looing forward to the GOG team making the necessary fixes.

While i was able to play & enjoy the game, ironically, the first Privateer actually played better. In this game, the video is interlaced, which wound up looking really weird/not enjoyable to watch. Also alt tabbing from the game to anything else would always wind up crashing the game the next time space combat happened. On the plus side, minus those issues, the game played beautifully. Very high resolution compared to the original release/nice graphics, and quite enjoyable.

This was one of my all time favorite games when it was released but i had trouble when it came too emulating it, i could never slow the game down enough to run on newer fast systems but GOG have found the old speed balance and made the game playable again. With this version you don't have to swap CD's like the old game because back in the day it was several disc's because the scanline movie scenes were large files back then as this was an early 90's game. The game play is the foundation of many games of it's type and was the first really good space sim for it's time, the combination of movie scene's for storyline along with open environment where your free to travel, trade & fight aswell as do story missions that progressed the story plot. In a sense it's basically an early X2,3,4 without the owning space stations, in this game you trade with planets not just space stations. I liked the story plot for this game and the added movie sequences at the time, for the early 90's this was a cool high end game as i can remember not many people could run it properly due to slower computers. Love the technology like scanlines they used back then to enhance videos because the resoultion was so bad, was common in many games of that era but i still love that because it brings back memories from years ago. Great old game GOG. This one is a real classic for space sim lovers and works prefectly at nice speed on brand new high end machines with windows 10.

I used a patch from the Wing Commander Combat Information Center and the game ran really well with it. Honestly it's just a fun game. I'd give it more of an 85% rating, but it's hard to convey that with stars. GOG really needs to give us a half star option. The movies are incredibly dated, however. I really wish that this game got the DVD treatment the same way WCIV did. That would have made things much better. Personally this was much more fun to play through than WCIV and I'd definitely recommend you give it a try.

i played priv1 back in the day, and always wanted to try priv2 but never had the chance. thankfully, the GOG.com version with the unofficial patch from wcnews.com works well in Windows 11. it does occassionally crash, but its manageable. I recommend it to anyone interested in privateer or wing commander games.
