Privateer 2: The Darkening

Spoon, unfortunately was spot on. I wish he wasn't. This was the best of games and the worst of games. GOG does the best they can. But some games are better for GOG than others, for example, with the Windows patch, WC4 plays better on my (Win7)machine than with the GOG version. This game violated the basic principle of gaming: its the interface stupid! Usually the better the control the better the game. This game with all its hopping around is way too complex. The storyline and the acting are great. Is it worth 50 bucks? NO 6 bucks on gog? yeah. Get the cheat codes and enjoy the storyline. But its no Privateer 1. obiken

Finally I'm able to play this game again ! I've started a new game from the beginning as I've lost my savegame when I have finally allied with the Pirates. Yes, behind the missions, there is a good history where you will be part of it, and once you complete all of the missions related with the history, you will won the game. PS: for those looking for the subtitles when interacting / talking with the characters, press ALT+O to disable the sound before the interaction / talk. Disabling the sound will enable the subtitles. Once back in the space, press ALT+O again to enable the sound again.

Privateer 2 is one of the best games I've ever played in my life, back in the 90's and later again in the 2000's. I was happy to find it here and ge back to good old times. It is not playable. The performance lowers down to single frames as soon as any object comes closer. Every time you want to land on a planet, it takes you forever, cause getting nearer to the planet will drop the framerate to single frames, before you can call the planet and ask for landing permit. Every space fight is a mess. As soon as you come closer to the enemy ship, same problem. Single frames. Other reviewers have said the same here. I am dissapointed there is no patch or something. GOG do tell how to alter the dosbox settings in general settings, nothing helped. I spent hours in altering the settings cause I wanted to play that game soooo much.

... the german version is available and it runs absolutely flawless. After 1 week of gameplay now there was no technical issue with the GOG adaption. No noticeable performance loss even in heavy combat. I loved this game formerly and I do love it again! The one missing star just results from the user interface, which feels as if it was 20 years old... ;)
