Human vacuum cleaner: the game

At first glance Prey looks like a competently made game. It’s strongest features are environmental design, setting, soundtrack and atmosphere. The problem is that at the same time it’s rather formulaic and hardly innovative, so for anybody who already played games like BioShock, PREY may be all too similar. Narration is largely handled through text and audio logs / calls. Interactions with characters and cutscenes are only occasional. I’m not a fan of such an approach, since games are a visual medium. These disjointed notes and conversations are hard to digest, especially when you’re distracted by combat. Their abundance and the fact that they often concern trivial matters, further discourages from reading / listening to them. There are moral choices in the game; however, for the most part they’re black and white and it’s rather obvious what you should be doing to achieve a “good” ending. Ultimately though, your decisions change little in the big picture, they just affect the fate of the main character. The gameplay is disappointing: PREY features just two unique guns. Shooting is unenjoyable for the most part. Special abilities are rather generic and bland. There are no bossfights, just a recurring enemy that can be avoided, which the game even recommends you to do. You can play stealthily though in my opinion it doesn’t fit a game like this at all. Hacking is very simplistic and unsatisfying. The game artificially inflates playtime by including a tedious crafting mechanic, which requires the player to collect scrap around the station and break it down into materials. Backtracking is also a prominent issue. All in all, PREY falls into the “not great, but not terrible” category for me. It’s pretty average, so I’d recommend to avoid it unless you cannot find a better game to play.

Excellent immersive sim, a must play!

Prey is a stealth survival shooter game made by the team behind Dishonored. You play as either male or female Morgan Yu, trapped in a space station invaded by shadow-like alien creatures. The station is really well-designed, it combines the aesthetics of Dead Space and BioShock. The gameplay is widely praised, and it's well-deserved. It shares a name with a (sadly abandonware) 2006 game, but it has no connection other than being a human vs alien story, taking place in a spaceship. As an immersive sim, you can choose multiple ways to progress, using the Human or Typhon skill trees. For example, you need to pass a door. Without skill, you must turn off a power switch. With Human skill, you can hack. With Typhon, mimic a small object and pass through the gap. The world map isn't linear, but as you progress you'll unlock new sections as well as shortcuts. Basically, an indoor open-world game like Control. There are also sidequests you can take, usually assisting NPCs. The thing I dislike about this game is ironically the combat. Maybe it's because I'm too familiar with Dishonored, but combat here feels like a shooter game. You cannot stealth kill or takedown enemies, you can only hit them while hidden which does extra damage. It's not really bad since BioShock is that way too, but I'd love a little more stealth since the developers clearly have experience at it. Overall, Prey is a really great game, probably one of the best immersive sims. If you like those kinds of games like the ones I mentioned, you'll definitely have a great time playing it. And like any imsim you should experience the many, flexible ways to progress.

The most Underrated Game I've played

Prey exceeded my expectations at almost every turn. One of the based paced games I've experienced in recent memory Prey continues to up the ante and bring you to new levels or tension, suspence, wonder, excitement and intrigue over the course of its campaign. Its game systems, rpg elements, immergent gameplay, open level design, multiple story endings & hidden secrets give it a great amount of replayability & freedom When I started Prey I couldn't put it down because it was too fun. I assumed there was going to be a pretty bog standard campaign filled with the same themes & ideas we've seen hundreds of times before, but Prey managed to get me far more invested in the mysteries around Talos 1 than I had ever expected. This is due to its great enviromental story telling, strong pacing & subtle ways the game conditions you to think about your experiences & enviroment Although Prey doesn't break new ground, each piece feels so meticulously crafted & given such great attention to detail, that the finished product feels like Arkane studios is not only single handedly revitilizing a genre, but bringing it to its logical conclusion Prey is a game that is made with a clear vision that manages to achieve everything it set out to near flawlessly. Few games will be able to match the artistic vision & polish that Prey offers From my beginings as a terrified & desperate survivor creeping my way through the dangerous corridors of the mysterious Talos 1, fighting fierce foes face to face with nothing but a wrench. To laying careful & calculated plans after accessing & learning more about my foes, enviroment and accessing wide range of tools, skills, weapons & upgrades. To my experience in the dramatic third act which would frequently explode into bursts of insane action, bullettime sequences & magnificantly murderous mayhem as I drew closer to coming to my own conclusions as I desperately raced against the clock to find answers & choose the fate of Talos 1, Prey had me gripped

Great game with merely good gameplay

This game reminds me of such classics as System Shock 2 or BioShock - in terms of setting and stylistic choices, as well as their melding of FPS and RPG elements. The game's dense atmosphere and story are very engaging and probably its best aspects. Unfortunately, while the overall experience is great, the game-play itself is merely good in my estimation, for a number of reasons: - The difficulty curve is poor. Even on Nightmare difficulty with survival mode, the endgame is a breeze. After an admittedly tricky beginning, the game never really grows appropriately more difficult as time goes on, despite how powerful you become. - The main story-line is rather short; this isn't such a big deal in itself, as there are plenty of side quests and additional tasks to do. - However, the game doesn't really have any good way to reward you, even for extensive side quests (beyond additional story-beats, which are very enjoyable): Since the entire item management is focused around recycling and crafting, side quests will usually just give you more stuff to get resources from. This gets boring and the rewards are less urgently needed after the first third of the game or so. - In line with this, special or even unique equipment is extremely rare (I've found exactly two special items, one of which was a pre-order bonus originally) and the variety of weapons and tools is overall low. To make up for this, the weapons and tools you do get are at times quite ingenious and have multiple uses (GLOO gun and recycler charges come to mind). Weapons can be upgraded, but boringly so. - Skills and suit/scope upgrades are where the actual variety of the game-play is hiding, letting you play around with varied active abilities and passive bonuses. Overall, I had a very enjoyable time with this game. Thanks to the many side quests, multiple ways to finish them and at least two extremes of "moral" and "skilling" play-styles (and anything inbetween those extremes), I'll replay it at least once.

Intuitive. Immersive. Impressive.

Prey (2017) is the one of my farorite modern games. Kinda interesting how the story balances between genres and themes; like, game clearly gives you space horror vibes for a first few hours, but it changes to strange fable about humanity and commiseration. And - which is suprising for fiction - story gives you something pretty close to modern science as an answer. Also whole Typhon stuff reminds me about aliens from "Blindsight" novel. But in the end you can actually see clearly Lovecraftian story about encountering alien mind from outer space. Prey is all about immersion and impovising. Most of time you are not seeking your way further - actually, you making it by youself with a GLOO canon, wrench, Typhon abilities and your imagination. The game gives you one of the best sandboxes for exploring constantly feeding your curiosity with various rewards such valueble items, consumables or new intel. And once you start to dig into it, you just can't stop until every suspiciously looking coffee mug will be checked with psychoscope and wrench - for scientific and safety purposes, of course. Prey aesthetics is really something cool. As i think, its desings blends retro-futuristic vibes with a modern functional approach (like using color codes in interior, clothes and in level-design generally). It's impressive, but also intuitive. Whole Talos-1 looks real, sensible, natural. Arcane didn't screwed up with fighting mechanics. The game allows you to focus on weapons and your skill and rush forward, shooting everything at sight, but you also can get much more profit from stealth attacks and thoughtful exploring; either way you can rely on Typhon powers, choosing betweet one of the weirdest and fun stealth mechanics or agressive face-to-face fights with superpowers. Soundtrack of Prey (2017) mostly made by Mick Gordon. It's actually pretty short but definetely fits whole game's mood. Semi-Sacred Geometry rocks! Just give a chance to Prey and play it.
