A RARE DOS CLASSIC - BACK FROM THE DEAD!

Firstly, I must congratulate GOG.com for digging this lost gem out of obscurity. I adored this game, and still own the physical CD Rom dos version. A must for all old school fans of Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat, it combines winning elements from both, and then adds it's own quirky touches. Where else would you find an undead Bruce Lee clone smacking the hell out of HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu (yes really), and a fatality involving the loser being flushed down a toilet by a big robot. Yes, the graphics are very dated, and character selection is somewhat limited compared to fancy modern titles, but heck, it's a solid title with bags of character. Light Shock Software, if you're reading this, a HD remake would be excellent, and while your at it, Fighting Spirit Remastered sounds pretty awesome too.

Ghetto Killer Instinkt

Played on Linux Mint 17.3 with a Logitech F310 gamepad. Runs fine. From the 1990s, a time when 2D fighters with a bit of shock value were all the rage, comes Pray For Death. Like Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinkt, Pray For Death throws a bunch of over-the-top combatants into a tournament in an over-the-top back story and lets players have at it. The gameplay is solid. The aesthetic has a B-movie vibe. The graphics have aged like vinegar - which is to be expected. The inclusion of Mac and Linux support is very welcome. While not as polished as MK nor KI, Pray For Death is still pretty fun and worth the $6 price tag.

Surprisingly good

On the whole, this was a satisfying game and when it came out it had some 'wow' effect, too: in 1996 no one expected a nice Killer Instinct clone, and for DOS on top of that! Yes, it showed lack of polish here and there, and some errors were typical of a (almost) rookie dev team: I mean the extra cheesy and badly translated dialogues; the unnecessary, long and clunky CGI movies; the stiff blocking moves. But PD also put on the table a solid combo system, a roster of interesting characters and *very* (and I mean VERY) good visuals for the time, far superior to SNES version of Killer Instinct and just a little below Nintendo 64 port (KI Gold), which had polygonal backgrounds. Yes, CGI models were grainy at 320x200 resolution, and screen captures don't do them real justice, but it was common back then: have to see the game in motion to appreciate it. And all the rest -animations, details, light and water reflection effects, perspective scrolling floor- was surprisingly good. Difficulty was and is average, I would say: the last boss battle is easy, but Pain boss is extremely challenging. All in all, PD is probably not among the cream of the crop of PC fighting games, but I'd easily deem it worth of a good place between second and first-tier PC beat'em ups.

Neat Killer Instinct clone

Pray for Death kinda flew under most radars (still I remember getting the demo on a CD, you could play Anubi and Cthulhu), and it's a shame. It's a cool KI clone with 10 playable characters (plus 2 bosses) and a flair of its own. It's your basic 1v1 fighter, with a 4.5-button system (ie. both punches together throw the super punch). Each character has specials and a 3-input special combo (separate special moves to chain), a combo breaker (hence KI clone) and 2 fatalities (kill and gag-kill -except bosses). Moves lists are short and to the point and the controls quite simple to learn. The characters are CG (Killer Instinct style) and the backgrounds are simple sprites, although some stages have are water or scrolling effects. Fighters include Bruce Lee, Anubis, Cthulhu, a fallen angel, a Viking, a military android, a rave DJ turned serial killer (pure '96 cyber-rave edge) and also Death itself. Design, while not groundbreaking, is fine and they looked quite good, especially for a 96 game in 320x200. The game offers 3 VS CPU modes, 3 Vs P2 modes and some Tournament modes (up to 16 players), including tag (survival) matches with 3 or more on each team. Makes some nice variety and replayability. Not all is perfect though:: animations are stiff, collisions a tad off, and the moves input are a little convoluted with a weird timing sometimes (especially on fatalities). The CPU cheats a bit even on easy (counters some moves or blocks each time without miss (like throws), the music is fairly repetitive and the announcer feels amateurish. Still no dealbreaker for me as the game grew easily on me for style and game modes. It also has cheats for bosses, Story freeplay, gag modes and 2 minigames -including Pong!. It may not be perfect, but with OMF:2097 it's one of the few noticeable DOS-borne fighting games that deserve some love. It's also good for a fun nostalgia-fest or as a guilty pleasure. Runs fine in DOSBox, keyboard-friendly, give it a try.

READY TO SMILE!

Linux User - Ubuntu Mate 16.04 64 Bit - I've never heard of this fighting game ever! I picked it up and hoped for a fun ride at least. I got so much more. This game is quite charming and made me laugh more than I thought it would in a good way. I am fan of Arcade fighters. KOF 98 to 2003/Garou are my favorite with Street Fighter Alpha series coming in @ 2nd. Killer Instincts and UMK3 coming in at 3rd. This game has the look and mechanics of Killer Instincts but the button scheme of KOF....This made me like it a lot. The controls felt clunky @ first but I found a control setup for my gamepads and fighter sticks to make it work to my advantage. I had a few friends come over for our weekly get together and put this game to the test and it passed with flying colors. It's going to be in our rotation next to KOF 2002, Skullgirls and Lethal League. Now to find these hidden moves. The game comes with the manual which I already printed in color to add to my control book for all of my other fighting games that I own. We need more games like this on the computer even more so for the Linux OS.
