Pillar of eternity is a not a very good game but a good game.
I really love the work on the combat system, class and all characters.
But for me when i play a game like pillars of eternity, i want a good story. An adventure like Baldur's gate where you folow a great story.
Pillar of eternity don't have a great story because it's short. Pillar of eternity have a story in 3 chapters when Baldu's gate have 7 chapters. When you play this game, if you follow the principal quest you will go to the end really quickly. And in the end, you will see you can't beat the boss because you don't have the level. (But you discover that only at the end after you destroy easy all minions)
Well for me :
Good graphic, Good rpg combat system, bad game design, bad writer story
I wanted to like this game, I really did. I've played the Icewind Dale series, BG1, BG2, and many other RPGs, and was hoping this game picked up the torch from those games and continued that "style."
Unfortunately, I'm about to give up on the game. I doubt I'll finish it. My main gripes:
1. Loading screens EVERYWHERE. Every building. Sooo annoying for a simple 2D game.
2. Too much blah blah blah blah. If I want to read a book, I'll read a book thank you very much. The story is boring and drawn-out. Screen after screen after screen of boring text.
3. Too little combat. I liked attacking the keep near Gilded Vale. I like the dungeon below the stronghold. But this is no hack and slash.
4. Combat is tedious. The pause-action system just doesn't seem to work. You can't rest much outside of inns, so you tend to set party AI to not use abilities/spells that require resting. Which makes combat boring.
5. Stupid party AI. Spellcaster will stand still in front of melee characters, blocking their path. Melee guys will get stuck and unable to fight. Really? It's 2018, and you can't figure out pathing AI?
6. No XP for monsters. After killing the first handful of each monster, you get zero XP. Booooring.
7. Bad itemization. Everything looks the same, stats are boring, I'm not seeing anything interesting or unique.
8. Stronghold. Do I have to say more? NWN2 already did this. It was slow, but bearable there. Here, it just seems like a chore. A cheap copycat chore.
9. For a game that is so highly touted for its story, I found myself wanting a generic "bad guy." It's just too slow, with meaningless blah blah blah and after 2 weeks of playing I still didn't have a clue other than that I was on some yawn-inducing "hollowborn" story. Come on, give me some baddie to beat up. Never thought I'd say that as I usually like stories, but Obsidian bored me to death.
10. All brand-new, difficult, boring lore. I'd rather have Forgotten Realms, thank you very much.
A shot and a miss. Sorry.
I am for now level 2 exploring with a cleric, I dont know if it is a good choice.
Also, in my opinion, the health / resistance stuff is really a bad thing, I truly dislike/hate the mechanic.
Only resistance can be healed, and even if health is much higher, every blow will lower health(0 resistance is unconciousness, 0 health is perma death). The game forces the player to camp to regain health and you have to use consumables for that.
People will say that you find easily the camp material, but I hate to be forced to use a consumables, to have limited healing without exiting the area or dungeon. I can just go back to the stronghold or the inn.
Also the perma death thing...
I have beat BG1, NWN1 (all of it), NWN2 (base and playing expansions), temple of elemental evil, Divinity Original Sin 1 and nos playing D:OS 2 (on normal difficulties)
I can't believe I came to think this game is not for me.
Anyway, I will try, a little bit more, maybe the health mechanic is not that bad. and the stronghold gameplay is not as bad as it sound to me. In that case I will modify the review.
So I actually bought just before it's launch after doing tons of research. I'm a huge Obsidian fan and have been since "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II" so I thusly took a massive leap of faith only to greatly feel bad for doubting Obsidian.
PROS
- Compelling and intriguing storyline. An actual plot.
- Well mapped out and interesting characters.
- Stunning isometric visuals. Simply stunning.
- XP reliant on exploration opposed to combat.
- Quality DLC. Actual freakin' expansions!
- Breath taking soundtrack.
- Old school Classic RPG
- Quality voice acting.
- Lots and lots of lore.
- Many hours of gameplay.
- Your own personal keep.
- Multiple ways to complete a single quest.
- Decisions actually matter.
- A good variety of enemies.
- A large variety of difficulty settings.
- They brought back "Big Heads" as a toggle option.
- Open platform.
- Big variety of playable classes and subclasses.
- Massive re-playability.
- Challenging gameplay and puzzles.
- Tons of different upgrades for your character and companions.
- Several companions and even ones you can purchase.
- Some economy mechanics involving your keep.
- Pretty large world map.
- The option to toggle audio commentary.
- Enemies you kill do not randomly respawn.
- Very few bugs and glitches. The game is well updated.
CONS
- No romance options. Not even prostitutes.
- Your keep is defaulted to you, you cannot choose your own.
- The DLC basically requires you to be close to max level.
- The constant fog of war after already discovering an entire area.
- The cheat to kill the fog of war doesn't effect entire map nor stay activated.
- Not a huge fan of sleep bonuses but this is a minor complaint.
- The voiced to text-only ratio is a bit unbalanced. Prefer either all voiced or all text-only.
CONCLUSION
In my opinion, the Pros far exceed the Cons and therefore I give it high marks. Also, this is one of the few games I have ever given full marks to. However, some of the things I felt this game lacked will likely be in the sequel because the truth is, if they put everything they had plus what I felt was missing then it is likely that the sequel would have nothing more to offer and thus suck so this is why I give it full marks. If you haven't already, buy the game now or buy it on sale, just buy it, it's more than worth the money no matter the price tag. This is Obsidian premiere IP and it is a strong one.
Starts out great, but falls hard and fast...
A whirlwind of problems is the only thing that can be said about this. So many things are poorly done, illogical, and make little sense. Countless bad choices lead to poor designs, broken battle systems and endless frustration for no good reason.
I've never been so disappointed in a game before, especially one that is fulled priced for something so very empty. It hosts the ideas of its predecessors, but has tampered and broken them in many ways, to the point where you don't even know what it what it's supposed to be. There is an endless list of problems here... Where to begin...
- Wrong damage displayed, and wrong damage characteristics displayed for weapons at times.
- Enemies jam and stop responding when in groups
- Enemies attack/retreat when attacked outside their zone.
- Largely small/empty Landscapes with scattered repeated enemies.
- Auto save creates a never ending amount of save files which you need to delete.
- Enemy targeting based on killing weakest player, leading enemies to run through and abandon battle to permanently killed players who are low life. This also occurs to NPC's who are not part of battle, disabling quests associated with them. Enemies often shoot through walls to permanently remove party members as well.
- Without doorways, enemies hold intense advantages.
- Xp system largely based on Quest vs. Fighting monsters, after a short while fighting monsters brings no experience at all.
- Broken attacks of opportunity lead to endless free attacks for the enemies, while you are not given the same opportunity.
- Childish vulgur language meaninglessly thrown in to attempt to make mature a theme
- Meaningless stories from NPC's added to sedate backers
- Most enemies host stun attacks, leading to constantly immobilized characters, unable to fightback.
- Simplistic armour system.
Overall, incredibly disappointed and appalled by this. Was meant to be my fav summer game. barely worth completing.
