Stall and Repetitive

Hm....seems the guys above got some high rating for this game, well i don`t. I own the original Hard-Copy from ages past and id like to point out some bothersome flaws this game has to offer: 1. Your CPU enemys wont give a **** about what planets they will conolize. Its not to their disadvantage to make bad descisions in this way but gives YOU way more and more repetitive Battles ( you cant skip to the outcome ). And once you clear a planet, the same or another enemy will almost instantly re-colonize it unless you do it. However, due to your race-specifics you may (will) not want to. 2. 95% of technology aint more than an upgrade to the basic type. Almost only "bigger bigger bigger". Waepons, Shields, Special Systems, Planetory Buildings just repeat each other with higher values... 3. Galactic Diplomacy. Short : There is none. All you or your opponents can do is click on a button for "request treaty for some unessessary stuff". the button highlights for a brief moment and then you see if it was accepted or not. All Races become soulless with this. No Edge and no Detail. You could have 20 Opponents on the map and you wont care for any1 of them because their is not even the slightest attempt to create a relationship to the player. Btw, the same way Wars are declared! - You wont get threats or demands from other races...once in a while just the message pops up telling you are at war now. why? who cares? 4. Difficulty settings. This will determine your Homeworlds recources as well as the opponents. Your fleet deminishes as well. so far so good. But how about this : there are 5 ship-types, from the tiny scout to the mighty battleship, and if you choose a difficulty to low, your opponents are not allowed to build larger vessels. However they will build TONS and more TONS of the smaller crafts they are allowed to. Believe me, its boring. I could keep going pointing out more annoying things ( ridiculous Unbalanced Race Spezifics forcing you to create a costum race for example ) but i will stop at this point. True, the game does make fun for some time..but it is short...very short. (about 2 or 3 playing to the end). If this genre is to your liking i STRONGLY recommend Master of Orion 2. Hell with " Real-time"...that wasnt more than jumping on the train cause all fussed about real time strategy years ago when it got popular (C&C).

Reach the Stars in Real Time

Pax Imperia plays as a typical 4X game in space, tasking you to lead a certain star-faring race through their conquest of the galaxy . Yet, unlike other highlights of the genre, such as Master of Orion or Galactic Civilizations, the whole process in not turn-based but occurs in real time. Want to research a new weapon to deploy on your ships? That will take two about two minutes. But a lot of things can happen in two minutes of this game, including your utter defeat on the battlefields of universe. Construction and fleet movement also share this gaming pattern. Luckily, time can be slowed or even stopped when needed, so you don't have to worry about losing touch with the gameplay itself. Players are welcome to design their own race in addition to those made by designers, and the same goes for vessels. Battles themselves are done in a pattern typical for 90's real-time strategy games. Your simply choose the sprites of your ships, and direct them to their target. Damage they cause or the one they can take depends on the achievements in your research department. The game also has a diplomatic system, allowing you to form treaties and alliances with other races. Spying is also an option, allowing you to do things such as stealing technologies or assassinating planetary leaders. What to add more? GOG was formed to bring games such as Pax Imperia-Eminent Domain back to hard drives of the world. To dedicated lovers of 4X games, as well as those who enjoy original take on strategic gameplay, this title will certainly provide hours of genuine fun.

Was playing this just last week...

I got this game as a kid, in the large original box. I still have the CD in my box of CDs, but I'd long since ripped an image of the disc, and was playing it just last week. UNFORTUNATELY, the GoG release doesn't have the amazing intro movie built-in, but you can still go watch it. I used to watch it every time the game started; that's how good it is. Gameplay-wise, I give Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain a 4. It's not Imgal 2, but Imgal 2 is also not Pax Imperia. When I want a game with deep espionage and diplomacy, I go to Imgal. When I want a game that's truly about the 4 'x'es, I play Pax Imperia. Once you figure out the systems the AI uses, it's easy and repetitive, but this is true of Imgal 2, Starcraft, Ur-Quan Masters, Earth 2150, and everything else out there. If you've never played Pax Imperia before, do yourself a favor and pick it up; for 6 dollars, it's an absolute steal. This is not nostalgia. This is last week's 6-hour, 100-system, 5-enemy Pax Imperia session talking.

Glad it's finally here

I played PAX IMPERIA when it was released and though I am a huge fan of turn-based 4x games (such as Master of Orion 2) I absolutely loved this real-time game (you can slow or pause time if you need a minute to think or step away from your PC). In fact, I loved PAX so much that for the last 15 years, while playing something else (like Galactic Civilizations) I kept remembering about PAX and I wanted to drop whatever I was playing to go back to PAX. The problem has been that I could not get my CD version to work correctly on modern machines, so thanks to GOG for making it available here. Of all the games I've played over the last 25 years, this game is among my top ten most memorable ones.

Not bad but ultimately very outdated

This game has some nice things about it. OST is pretty good, and graphics are (considering its age) quite amazing. It can be fun but there are lots of annoying things. For instance, the game never bothers to explain you anything about how it works. And I don't mean "explain how to win", I mean literally basic mechanics. Say, there are governors of planetary systems. They have "skills" in domestic policy, espionage, research and fleet, represented by percentages. Those skills tend to grow over time. What do they affect? Do they affect anything at all? I make an assumption that they affect production of money, science, etc but the game doesn't tell me that and I'm still not sure. Then, you can assign those governers as one of 4 advisors: domestic, fleet, science, foreign, and they get a single number that corresponds to one of their skills. Does it affect anything? If so, what exactly? I assume that science advisor increases science production, and domestic most likely increases money production, but what about fleet? Does it increase ship accuracy? Damage? HP? Building speed? Ship XP gain? All of that? Or, say, there is a shield module that says that it regenereates 20 HP per round. And the combat is real-time. So, how much is "round"? It's important as it can make a difference between shield being pretty good and absolute crap. Or a module that "decreases lock-on bonus and missile tracking bonus". It goes up to -150% and there is no other mention of those bonuses, specifically no way to increase them. So, how does it work? And what in hell is "lock-on bonus" at all? And so on, and so forth. My second problem is AI being very stupid and very stubborn. It can keep sending transports to colonize absolutely irrelevant planet just for you to wipe this planet out 10 seconds later. It can send tons of small fleets that are destroyed by absolutely anything but there's so many of them that it gets really annoying. The reasoning behind AI declaring war are an absolute mistery to me. Not that there's much reason for allying anyway. The balance seems weird as well. Late-game "special weapons" have maximum possible range, damage 3 times higher than the best rockets, high fire speed and can also target planets. They make absolutely all other weapons obsolete, yet there are still technologies for rockets or bombs that cost as much research as the best of special weapons. So, in the end, the game can be fun for a while but it quickly gets annoying over time. But the music is nice.
