Description
The original Indie Cult Classic returns fully restored, and more evocative than ever and includes the original version of Pathologic!

Pathologic Classic HD is the Definitive Edition of the original Cult Classic Psychological First-Person Survival game. The game represents a unique and unforgettable experience as it transports players in a weird town which crouches, ominous, in the far reaches of an ancient steppe. It was once a small drover settlement, huddled around a monstrous abattoir—but something about the butchery it was near has changed it. It has developed an odd social structure over the course of several generations. It could have quietly continued along its weird way, but a sudden outbreak of an unknown and inevitably lethal disease has decimated the citizens. Prayers did not help. Science did not help. So, finally, they have turned to outsiders for help: three of them enter the town in hope of finding a cure or—failing that—an explanation. The first outsider was a ruthless investigator, assigned by local authorities. The second is a far-sighted Ripper who has used his extraordinary abilities to gain a reputation as an ingenious surgeon, who has come to the town in search of his father's terrible heritage. The third—and last—outsider is an eccentric girl rumored to have mystic healing abilities; she may become the town's salvation were it not for the constant fear that plagues her, the memory of the horrors of her recent past.

On the surface, Pathologic is a first person horror adventure game where you control one of three "heroes." Dig deeper, however, and you’ll find an experience that will affect your emotional and psychological state. In the world of Pathologic you’ll find yourself in situations where morals and good deeds are meaningless in the face of raw despair and endless need. Talk to the denizens of the town and decide for yourself if you wish to ease someone else’s pain or save every bit of precious medicine to protect yourself from the invisible and inexorable plague. Become witness to the miasma of horror as the plague begins to overcome the town.

New Enhancements

Brand New in-house English script: For the first time ever, the game has cast off the major issue that had previously disallowed international audiences from accessing it.
Brand New Voice-overs
New content: A certain amount of text that had previously been cut from the international version of the game have now been restored
Updated textures and higher resolutions support.
New visual effects.
Newly Included Fan-Made Polish translation thanks to the hard work and generosity of Jakub Derdziak & Aldona Derdziak.
  • An indie cult classic.
  • 12 days in a plague-ridden town. Time is running, and mostly it’s running out; numerous events unfold, whether you’re there to witness them or not.
  • 70+ hours of real-time gameplay without grinding or repetitive quests. As time goes by, more and more things happen, inviting you to participate and change the course of events.
  • 3 playable characters with 3 unique storylines. The Bachelor’s, the Haruspex’s, and the Changeling’s plots are interconnected, but every side of the trilemma is represented separately via unique events, quests, dialogues, and subplots.
  • The plot is critically acclaimed and often regarded as the high point of the game. It’s not just about the fate of the dying town—it’s about an ideological conflict, represented by a multitude of characters and factions, each with their own idea of what life, death, and miracles are.
  • An open-world game. While the plot is there to grab you, the town has no artificial boundaries: you are free to explore it from day one, carving out your own story.
  • Survival is tough. The dying town demands that you constantly keep an eye on your status, maintaining a full belly and decent immunity. That will require tough choices.
  • Communicate, barter, rob, or steal. There are many ways to acquire your bare necessities, each of them with its own benefits and drawbacks.
  • The atmosphere of bleakness and despair without cartoonish evil or bad guys. Playtime is over—there will be no jump scares or simple solutions. You will have to do it the hard way.

The return of a cult classic.

Pathologic (known in Russia as "Мор. Утопия"), was originally released in 2005, to stellar reviews in its native Russia, and a not-as-stellar reception in the West. Its main drawback - a botched and often incomprehensible translation, made the story-heavy and character-driven plot difficult to understand. Fortunately, this problem has since been rectified with this remaster, and there's more stuff - such as upgraded visuals and restored content - to make this release a worthy restoration. Pathologic takes place in a small, backwater settlement, isolated by a vast steppe. Three healers arrive in the town independently of one another and for completely different reasons - but are soon forced to stay as the town is quarantined following the outbreak of a deadly plague. Gameplay consists of exploring the bizarre world, conversing with important characters as you do your best to survive as the town descends into panic. It's hard to categorize Pathologic into a clear-cut genre, but "story-driven survival adventure" describes it pretty well. Expect lots of strange conversations (characters are delightfully eccentric) and a dreary atmosphere as you walk through the infected streets of the town. The story is where the game shines, and it has yet to be surpassed by any other game I've played. The three playable characters (known as Bachelor, Haruspex and Changeling), all experience the game's twelve days from completely different perspectives, leading them to their own conclusions. The mystery of the Sand Plague and the innumerable secrets of the town stay hidden for a large portion of the game, but damn if it doesn't constantly keep you insatiably curious throughout. That said, the visuals (even with the new graphical effects) are fairly dated by now, and the slow trudging through the town can be a bit slow-paced for some players. However, if you like story-driven games with fascinating characters and an unforgettable plot, you really can't go wrong with Pathologic.

The best Russian videogame...

so it really deserves to be bought. Especially if you like Planescape: Torment, visual novels and Russian classic literature like Dostoevsky. I'm saying it like inhabitant of this country and I'm really proud for my people that they created this masterpiece. Dybowski is a really good writer, that's for sure. I recommend to play first as Bachelor, then Haruspex and Changeling at last. Tell you the truth, I really like all playable characters for some reasons but for me Changeling is the best. And the best for last, in a manner of speaking. Unfortunately, it was bad translated at first time due to hardness of Russian language (especially, this type of texts and dialogues) but the developers and volunteers fixed it. Changeling has more sense than Devotress, e.g., etc. I hope the volunteers will translate it on Japanese so Katan from ADVGAMER that he could play it without the language barrier and recommend Pestilence (Russian title) to others from his land.

Very ambitious but niche classic

Absolutely recommended, IF you know what you're getting into. In terms of narrative, Pathologic is easily one of the most ambitious games out there, not just in the multi-layered way the story is structured but also its ideas (I suggest you don't look these up any further if you're planning to play it -- it's best to go into it blind). There are very few other games like this out there, and most of them by this same studio. However, the rest of the game doesn't live up to the same standard. You could argue that the game is bad at communicating things to you, but I'd say it uses a more realistic/natural way of communication than UI prompts or blatant quest text. A more objective complaint is the graphics, which are bad by modern standards, if you care about that sort of thing, and the gameplay, in spite of all the original ideas it tries to execute, is a bit broken -- but it's not too bad, definitely not as bad as most people/media like to paint it. Ironically, it still manages to be one of the best examples of gameplay-story integration, in my opinion. But if you don't mind an old-looking, somewhat clunky, very text-heavy game, and especially if you play games for their story, Pathologic is unique. P.S. If you're doing multiple playthroughs, save Changeling for last.

Economic Depression Simulator 2006

Pathologic is not a fun game; rather, it's the gaming equivalent of living on the streets in Venezuela. It is also one of the most important games in the world. The shining star of a genre of a games that can only be defined as "Russian", Pathologic is a place where the end of the world is not explosions and excitement. Rather, it is a boring trudge in isolation as you give up every inch of moral fibre out of convenience. At the end of it, you don't even consider it ironic to be pondering high-level philosophy whilst literally scamming kids for medicine. If you can endure it, Pathologic absolutely gives you an unparalleled insight into how societal collapse shape people. For the absolutely best experience, start playing the game as your typical doe-eyed RPG character and try to maintain that level of morality for as long as possible.

the greatest game ever made, if you will

Pathologic is a game about games, and a game about theater - about /playing a role/ in both senses of that word - which asks you, the player, to embody one of three key parts in the grim play Ice-Pick Lodge has created for you, represented by three different healers with three different philosophical approaches to life and medicine in stopping a plague in a small town in the great grass steppe of Eurasia. Each player character has a wholly different part to play than the other two, with non-player characters of different classes and social strata reacting differently to each protagonist. The many and sundry characters of the town are so memorable I think I'll never forget some of them, as each has a distinctive voice and personality and philosophy which comes through rather brilliantly in the excellent new translation presented by this "Classic HD" version. Pathologic is often called a horror game, although I think it is most accurately described as an adventure - there is a truckload of dialogue, and walking around town and talking to people are the core mechanics - with a first-person perspective and survival mechanics, wherein everything is stacked against you, and any upper-hand you might transiently have can be quickly worn away on a bad in-game day. NPCs will lie, manipulate, and conceal information; prices for vital supplies will spike; and the town will consistently become ever more dangerous to traverse day by day until you find yourself desperately running through an orchestrated simulation of chaos in its latter third. It is forbidding, difficult, and even oppressive, yet unimaginably rich and rewarding, thoughtful in a way that video games rarely ever are, if you can get used to its scrappy combat and occasionally poor quest design.
