Clever to a few minutes at a time.

It does NOT have a great deal of depth. I was just playing it and it is like an oldschool atari game but in 3d in a way. I actually really like the idea of the 3d atari game. I just kinda find it neat. I'M NOT EVEN SURE THAT WAS THIER INTENTION. But it is SOMETHING that can be LEARNED FROM. (cups hands) 3D ATARI STYLE OLD-SCHOOL MODERN GAME! A game/GAMESTYLE like this COULD really benefit from procedural maps etc. However the gameplay needs a life. Counter. andliveswow. SOMETHING GAME EVEN. Man... 3 lives remember that. FIFTY YEARS AGO! Better depth. Nice idea good conept. BECAUSE I'M HANDING YOU THE BACON. ANY OF DEVS AN ENGINE THAT CAN DO THIS THING. Modern Oldschool 3d atari game thing. This 3d super oldschool atari style game with modern developments sounds like A REAL ANGLE. Hate the game not the players. It sounds like this guy barfed on his junk and just sat there or something. Try again, or SOMEONE IN THE COMMENTS SPOOK MY SUGGESTION TO SOME SORT OF DEV PEOPLE. I'm too lazy. kthnx

A fun and fast shooter

Paranautical Activity hearkens back to the days of old school FPS but mixes that with the modern roguelike trend. The gameplay is both fast and frantic and there are tons of items to find to help keep the game varied. If you enjoyed the fast paced shooters of old, then give this a try. It's got some nifty tunes as well.

Right reasons

The game is flawed but surprisingly good, if you view it as a game and not developer actions. The game plays like trying to convert binding of Issac into a 3D platform rogue-like shooter with an aquatic theme. Firefights can be frantic at times, but not terribly overwhelming as the pacing which difficulty scales is forgiving enough. Personally I am not a big fan of the minecraft blocky aesthetic, but for a dev, it is a logical enough choice to get into 3d game development easily. Also that low res design choice makes the game much more forgiving on system specs, allowing you to get higher frame rates with substantially less hardware than what most modern FPS games would allow. In fact I can run the game decently on an integrated graphics laptop The developer is still very much supporting and continuing development of the product which really is important in any modern game. Extra levels and content to mix into a rogue-like format help to bolster replayability Now as for what most people want to tank the game for. The dev went on a verbal tirade against Steam front man Gabe Newell. Because of that threat, (which was displaced anger with the problems that exist with steam) The people at steam remove the game from their platform. Then steam supporters towed the company line and railed against the developer While not handled in the best manner, the truth is that reaction would not have happened, had steam not caused extensive and repeated problems. In fact, resistance and outcry should be applauded because too many developers are tolerating unjust treatment with how important steam is perceived to their ability to make a profit . If more developers and gamers would actually get upset at distributor hostility, the industry would be in far better shape today. TL;DR So if you view it on the basis of a game, It is an above average game with some flaws, but its dev taking anti steam stance is not one of them.

The very embodiment of "Meh".

Let me get this straight out there, Mike Maulbeck (the dev behind this game) is... well, not a professional developer to say the least, he has threatened people in the past, and he has severe anger issues, googling his name and the word "threat" after it should give you a good idea of what kind of problems this guy has, but does that mean his work is bad? well, it depends what kind of a person you are, personally i don't try to judge a person's work by the persons emotions or stress, or whatever issues they may have in their private life, but Paranautical Activity is a very bland.. bland.. game, you're better off booting up Quake 3 Arena's Skirmish mode and having a blast with that, because there is nothing to look for in Paranautical Activity that could possibly make you think "Wow, i'm sure glad this game was made, sure did change how we look at games today. look how quirky and retro it is.. ha-ha" the only thing you'll be thinking of course is "I can't believe i wasted more than 10 bucks on this visual diarrhea".. but let's get into the review before i also turn into Mike Maulbeck. Gameplay is very simplistic, kill a bunch of monsters, pick up weapons and ammo, go to the other room, rince and repeat, i have no clue if you fight any bosses or anything because i couldn't stand playing for more than 10 minutes, before i booted up my NES and played a particular game about a plumber who crushes turtles under his own bodyweight - which is a much better game in every single way, as it shows how simplicity is done right, Paranautical Activity shows how it's done wrong, i'm sorry that this review isn't in-depth, but just look up a 3 minute gameplay video or something, because there isn't much to see in this game, if you still think this game looks good, by all means pick it up, but be sure to pick it up during this years GOG insomnia sale as it's not worth the full price they demand, there are simply better games in the same genre.. (no hard feelings.)
