Ozymandias is minimalistic 4x games distilled to most importand elements. Gameplay is interesting. Rounds can be finished in few hours.

Fun and quick tabletop-like strategy
First thing first - despite the subtitle, Ozymandias is definetely not a empire sim like Total War or Paradox's series. Which does not mean that it is a bad game, just misleading. Actually Ozymandias is quite enjoyable tabletop-like strategy in which player(s) try to lead a bronze age nation to domination over a map representing a part of the world. Who first fullfils set of quests, such as having X armies, Y tiles of land or Z gold, wins. The matches generally takes no more than an hour which makes this game perfect for breakes from doing something productive. The mechanics are also simple and even my fiancee who played only Sims could quickly pick the game and play succesfully against computer opponents. The only downside for me is rather limited amount of available maps. On Steam it was solved by DLC which are unfortynately not available on GoG, although the vanilla game is constantly updated on this platform.

Hidden Gem
After an initial look, I dismissed this game. I'm so glad I eventually picked it up. This game is incredibly tight. It uses simple mechanics to maximize strategic deicsions. Each nation on each map plays differently and demands to be solved. The game is hard, but beatable. Other "board game" style games haven't done it for me, but this game reall scratched the itch.

It's not really Civ-like
I think this game is solid and reasonably well designed, however, it's not really the game it's marketed as, and not really the game I was hoping for. First of all, it's a 4x game mechanically, yes, but not in spirit. This is almost the definiton of a spreadsheet game. Technology isn't discovering new things, it's just increasing your numbers. Expanding is just getting more hexes that generate those numbers. Exploring? Nope. The combat system is really weird too. Your power is based on how much of your current turn's money you spend. Which means if you make any purchases (like, say, more armies) your total power will plummet. Why do all my armies become weaker when I purchase a new one? Mechanically it is ok, but thematically it doesn't really work. And that is my biggest problem. When I'm expanding I want to get cool resources and places. In this game I'm just bumping up my numbers. When I'm discovering new technology, I want to be uncovering seafaring or iron working. Instead I'm just improving by number production? Building cool buildings or wonders? How about just increasing city population which, how did you know, increases some numbers. All of that being said, I could still enjoy a game like this. The problem is I feel like I've played better elsewhere. Offworld Trading Company immediately jumps to mind. It's realtime, which is a bit different, but gives the exact same number tinkering feeling in a faster time with a lot better flavour. Btw, current top review says the game is abandoned on GOG. It's not. I just double checked and I have the most recent update.

Addictive 4X Board Game
The mechanics are easy to learn, but allow surprisingly many strategies and room for optimization. There is very little randomness, so you can plan moves several turns in advance and are rewarded for thinking things through. Games only take a few hours at most, so rather than "just one more turn", this is more of a "just one more scenario" type of game. I have several AAA games installed waiting to play, yet I keep coming back to this one.
