Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. Play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. The night takes a terrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly gate spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.
YOU determine every aspect of Alex's story while exploring Edwards Island, uncovering the base's dark past, and changing the course of your friends' lives.
A mind-bending supernatural adventure full of mystery and terror
An intelligent conversation system that changes the story and your relationships based on every decision
A unique radio mechanic that allows Alex to communicate with mysterious spectres and manipulate her world
About dialogues...
- Characters speak a lot.
- Characters speak too fast.
- Occasionally characters speak simultaneously (And this is annoying event in real life!).
- You have like 5 seconds to pick one of pop-up dialogue options while they continue speaking (And this sometimes interrupts other characters).
- At the same time you have to read multiple lines of never-ending dialogue subtitles if you don't understand english at all and need them in different language, or do not understand english when it is spoken too fast (my case).
In other words, this game is downright unplayable if your english is not good enough. And even if it is, you still have 5 seconds to read the dialogue options and make a meaningful decision - what is not enough even if characters have spoken my native language.
What a pity, considering this game might have a decent story I could like.
At first I was struggling to understand the game "languare" cuz it's american but after some time I got it :D
I also love that You could pause and still see the answers/questions from the game, so It gives you time to think about what did they say, and what to say them back :D I like that game isn't scary too much well.. at least no jumpscares, that's also why this review is 5 stars!! :D Rly love it!
Oxenfree is a refreshing approach to point and click adventure games. The story and voice acting is great, if you can enjoy teen-related drama. Unfortunately gameplay and puzzles are subpar when compared to the rest of the game components. Neverthelss, the atmosphere and story carries the game all the way. Great game to chill during a cold evening.
Then avoid this one!
While the idea of following a group of youngster on an island shrouded in mystery might sound fun at first, you'll soon realise there are only two gimmicks that serve the gameplay: selecting nice/mean/nonchalant response to whatever question is thrown at you (that will eventually lead to different ending) AND tuning to the right frequency to unlock the progression by randomly falling onto a number on the FM Band.
I won't even talk about the story that reminded me the finest hours of B movies, or the appalling jump scare that just don't work in a 2D walking simulator.
Oh and there is this annoying bug with the XBO controller that made the vibration constant.
I got it for free but it cost me my time.
Story: 4.5 stars
Voice acting: 4.5 stars
Gameplay: 1 star, maybe less.
Graphics: 4 stars
Replayability: 1.5 stars
If you know what you are getting yourself into, this COULD be the game for you. But first and foremost, this is more of a walking simulator than it is an actual "game". That being said, here's my experience:
It was free for a console this month, I liked it enough to buy it on GOG. I was bored, it looked very simple, so I decided that's what I wanted at the moment. I read just a handful of reviews: "starts slow, but gets interesting". BOY does it start slow. As said, the teen drama was a turn-off, but the voice acting and writing was interesting enough to kept me engaged. After more minutes than I'd care to count, shit goes down, things get interesting, and I was hooked. Now by hooked, I'm not talking about Bioshock 1 plot-twist hooked, but more like "oh, this is interesting, I'd sure like to know more." So yes, the story makes up for the "crappy" gameplay.
Gameplay Dialogue: Again, as reflected in other reviews, the 1-3 seconds to offer a dialogue response is mostly bullshit. Realistically that's how long you have to offer a witty retort before you sound lame, but if someone asks you a question, MOST people aren't gonna huff in disappointment and move on when you didn't respond after 3.5 seconds.
Gameplay Controls: MY KINGDOM FOR A RUN BUTTON! Ok, I get it. If I ran everywhere the interjections of story bits and soundtrack moments might get missed, but the same thing happens with the limited dialogue response. Move rate is out of your control. After shit goes down, and that dude tells you the thing, you think you'd stroll around a leisurely pace? Hell no. My compromise? Give me a run button for 2nd playthrough.
Replayability: Only to watch someone else. I want to know how else things can play out, but NOT at that pace. I would, and did, watch my friend play so they can see the story, but without shortening playtime, I'd rather google the endings.
