  • Volcanoes, vortexes, meteor showers and natural disasters are all part of life (and death) on this planet.
  • When night falls strategies change. You never know what dangers are lurking in the dark.
  • 140 different vehicles and buildings add unequalled depth of play with 60,000 frames of animation.
  • Do-or-die, real-time combat brings the final battle for survival to a pulse-pounding climax.

A Surprisingly good base management RTS

I was a really big fan of the original Outpost (which was just a colony management sim) and I got this when it originally came out. The colony management isn't as complex, but the RTS portion makes up for it. There's a few nitpicks such as a little excessive micromanagement, units you build in on mission allegedly for the next mission not actually carrying over to the next mission, and the occasional random disaster making the level unwinnable, but it is a really good game for the era it was produced in. The colony system is still pretty robust, commanding the robots is pretty fun, and the story between the missions is really good as well.

Dessert topping? Floor wax? It's both!

Outpost 2 is... fine? It doesn't really do anything wrong, but it doesn't do much amazingly well either. The first thing to know is that if you approach this as a city builder then you're probably going to be disappointed by its simplicity. It won't take more than a couple hours to construct an optimized colony in creative mode. Instead, the core of the game is focused on the campaign where you'll be faced with a series of scripted scenarios, each with their own objectives and challenges. Taken by themselves, the RTS and city builder aspects in Outpost 2 are basic. Put them together, though, and add some authored direction and you have a decent game on your hands. There is a story and, actually, it's pretty good. If you're just looking for a scifi novella by J Steven York, then bump this review up to five stars. Doled out as plain text chapters between missions, though, the narration only provides a backdrop for your actions and rarely integrates with the gameplay. Even though you have some well developed characters, they unfortunately won't be joining you as hero units. In conclusion, Outpost 2 is a quaint hybrid of RTS and city builder elements but don't expect the world from it.

An RTS that doesn't involve war!

Outpost 2 is a great game, and an example of a rare game: an RTS not centered around combat. And make no mistake: this is an RTS, not a city builder. The building and population management isn't particularly complex, though you do have to keep people happy and healthy - enough. The setting and gameplay make it difficult to set up a utopia. Instead, the constant time pressure and the specific mission goals, and the gameplay in general make it far more a traditional RPG. The conflict here is not against some enemy force, but against nature itself. You manage a human colony on an alien world, well-established but quite young; a few colonists remain who came to the planet as children, and are now respected elders. A calamity leads to a natural disaster that drives you from your home, and the entire game is spent in a long retreat, establishing a series of temporary bases just long enough to build up your reserves again, making what technological and material progress you can manage before the ever-following doom. Mediocre gameplay and graphics that were pretty great in 1997 but have aged a little poorly temper the original premise and compelling story. There's even an accompanying novella which unfolds at a rate of one chapter per mission, and which I highly recommend. This game isn't perfect, and I'd probably give in a 9/10, but I chose to round up because I really do think that this is an amazing game that every scifi strategy fan should pick up.

Finally!

I had voted to have this on GoG quite a few years ago, and I am so happy it finally arrived! This is hands down my favourite RTS is all time, just before Dune 2k. This is not like most RTS, however. There is much more focus on management itself. And the colony building is rather unique. So do not go into it expecting large battles. One complaint that I hope they sort is the resolution, like had been mentioned. There are fixes already available. So I hope those get implemented.

Combination of RTS and base building

Disclamer: I used to play Outpost 2 back in 90s-2000s and don't own this GoG version of it. The game is quite good albeit definitely not for everyone. You build base and struggle with nature cataclysms, computer rivals and timer. Base building is similar to most other strategies but buildings require not only power to operate but people as well. This means you also have to manage and grow population, their morale and health. It is not so straightforward for RTS but is not very complex comparing to most other city-building games. The combat itself is not very deep — AFAIR there are 3 tiers of tank body and dozen of weapon types to choose from them. Some arms are quite unique and fun comparing to other RTS games, like sticky foam which immobilizes groups of enemy tanks in web-like substance, or EMP that disables enemy tanks completely but for a shorter time. The combat and the game itself are not fast-paced for sure. The combination between RTS and base building is very nice and well done. I'm not sure if any of them would be very captivating on their single own but combination was good and solid. Imagine, you try to grow your population 5 more people but have to struggle AI at the same time and/or run from lava. The story behind is also really good. The point that is not for everyone for sure — even when you fight the AI the top priority is usually to build and grow your base large enough to move on. Some maps even will not have opponent, you'll have just to build your base and flee to avoid lava/virus. This also makes pace of the game quite slow comparing to most other titles. If you are ok with that and you like old RTS games you'll like this one too. If you are more into active fights and destruction you will not find them here.
