Tight pakage and action that feels good.

This isn't an exceptionally long game, but it's cheap, and the gameplay mechanics are executed really well for an action platformer that has a lot of mobility and quick strategy. Along with a small set of melee skills and projectile weapons, your main tool is a harpoon that acts as both a spear melee weapon and a mobility device like a Legend of Zelda hookshot You can bash your way in close combat with the harpoon, or lob it into a distant enemy and teleport yourself towards them to get in a few good hits. It also grapples to non-hostile objects ,letting you work your way around the screen. The harpoon teleportation is also the primary focus of the platforming in the game. All the action feels good in this game to execute. The difficulty had a few frantic moments for me, and I died a fair amount of times, but I never felt cheated. My only real complaint with the game is the exceptionally lo-fi pixel art. It's a couple notches too much. The are moments of the game that show off a really cool style and a unique world, but become obscured by being made of only a handful of pixels. It can also make some of the chaotic moments or platforming hard to read. I also wish the autosave is more generous than a single slot. There were a few times I was having trouble with boss fights and wish I went into it wearing a different one of the magic hats that give you apecial combat abilities, and no older save to go back to be better prepared. Other than that, it was really fun while it lasted and left me wanting more. I'll be keeping an eye out to see what Skeleton Crew does next. Buy this game so they get money to make something bigger.

Pulp Meets Poetry

Olija has the atmospheric and aesthetic sensibilities of a Chahi classic with the punch and style of Treasure's most unabashedly kinetic productions. It's the careless abandon of pulp adventures and classic kung-fu with the biting aftertaste of nihilistic despair. Just try the demo on Steam; it's a fully representative slice of the game. As others have said, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Perfectly paced and conscious of its brevity, you'll wish it would stay while understanding why it has to leave. Deliberate, contemplative narrative scenes are balanced with surgical precision against the high-flying gameplay, and the effect is the nigh-seamless integration of highly replayable action platforming into an emotional tale that communicates as much through stillness and silence as through motion and words. If your concern upon considering this game is that gameplay will exist only nominally and in service of the story, abandon that notion now. While remaining accessible in complexity and difficulty, the combat and platforming are most certainly not an afterthought, and there is hidden depth within these waters that has kept me from leaving. This masterpiece effortlessly plunged me into its world, and I'm content not to escape.

Very solid action platformer w/charm!

Played the demo & I'm sold by the solid controls, game-feel, and charming SFX & music. Has that classic animation akin to Prince of Persia or Blackthorn. Clearly a labour of love!

What i wanted to play without knowing

I really liked this game, I finished it 2 or 3 months ago and I still remeber it's mood almost daily. This mood reminded me of thekind of dull despair I felt in dark souls when I first played it years ago. Of course the gameplay is very different here, the game is more of a platformer with some (simple and good) combat mechanics. And it's not the level design that reminds me of the souls series, here you have to access different islands in a fairly linear way to upgrade your HQ and unlock other parts of the map. As in dark souls I could almost believe I was passing through lands and ruins filled with history. I know I have mentionned the souls quite a bit here and that's because I ve played my faire share of souls like games and seen countless game try to be vague and elusive in just the way DS had managed and fail... But here is a game that doesn't even seem like it tried, that doesn't feel like it's trying to walk in a legend's footsteps but managed to keep a part of my mind in just the same way. And without efforts I found myself playing this game t the end, watching a story of legend unfold in front of my eyes. You already understood that I am not especially objective about the game, if I was I could probably remember a default or another and I d probably give it 4 stars instead of 5. But in this review I am not trying to explain mechanics, gameplay or graphics. I just wanted to say (in a very long way as my thoughts were not so clear before I started writting) that this game touched me and keeps me dreaming, and tha t I hope it can do the same for you

Pas le coup de coeur, cependant...

Bien que le jeu ait finit par me tomber un peu des mains, je serais hypocrite de dire qu'Olija est un mauvais jeu. Bien au contraire, il se distingue positivement par plusieurs aspect. Oeuvre un peu singulière, plus narrative que ce que j'imaginais et met en scène un univers intéressant à l'ambiance médiévale (en qq sorte?), marine et rude. Son pixel art simple est néanmoins très beau et maîtrisé. Manette en main, j'ai trouvé le gamefeel plutôt bon, même si parfois je le trouvais confus, me demandant alors une petite seconde pour me recaler et reprendre la main sur la situation. Un autre inconvénient est qu'il faut avouer que le jeu n'est pas toujours clair sur ce qu'il attend de la joueuse et du joueur ce qui, couplé au gameplay pas parfait et une histoire peu à mon goût, j'ai décroché. Olija reste pourtant une oeuvre que je suis content d'avoir acheté, et que je recommande, au minimum pour l'expérimenter quelques heures.
