In a lush world of diabolical danger where everyone wants to eat you, you're the skinny guy with no weapons.
Run, jump, hide, scramble and talk your way past the ugliest bunch of carnivorous crustaceans ever created.
Unlock Abe's special powers, then figure out your foes, and you might save your race. Don't, and you're dinner!
Abe is a first class Mudokon floor-waxer for RuptureFarms. He was catapulted into a life of adventure when he overheard plans by his boss to turn all the Mudokons into Tasty Treats as part of a last-ditch in Molluck the Glukkon's meat-packing empire.
During his escape from RuptureFarms, Abe received a vision from the mysterious Big Face, showing Abe that he must not only rescue his fellow Mudokons, but also protect all of Oddworld's creatures from the predatory Magog Cartel.
Enter Oddworld's surreal sensory overload of pure gaming and claim your destiny. Saviour or salami? You decide.
This was an awesome game back when it was released and it still has the caliber to today's standards. Although very simple, figuring out just how to rescue every mudokon in the game can be quite challenging.
You are Abe, the cute and likeable protagonist, and your goal is to free yourself and your fellow Mudokons from Rupture Farms, who wants to turn you all into tasty treats. You must solve simple puzzles and time your actions in order to do this.
PROS:
- Everything is divided into a grid system that makes strategizing easier. This gives you adequate time to make jumps and transition between movements.
- In some areas, the order of completion doesn't matter. If you found one room too difficult to complete, you can complete the others and do it afterward.
- The art style is nice.
- Abe's voice is really likeable.
CONS:
- The scrolling between screens can cause you to mis-time your actions, in turn causing you to die and have to re-do the section.
- Some mechanics should have been explained, or explained earlier. For example, some bird portals are solely intended for your use.
- A few more save points could have been added to avoid re-doing easy sections.
- There is little to no replay value. If you loved this game and are feeling nostalgic, then surely you will play it again later, but otherwise there is no other reason to play it again.
Overall, this game is quite fun and the puzzle and platforming work together quite well. I found playing this game as enjoyable as did when I first bought it in the late nineties. If you've played it before and want to play it again, or if you've never played it, then I'd recommend getting it.
For me, this was the first videogame I’ve ever played. Ever. Puzzle platformer with mostly thinking, but also running/jumping required. By traversing the game’s maps, you’ll find 99 inhabitants, which you can possibly save. You need to save at least half of them to have the good ending, which is difficult in a first playthrough, as you could not always know the appropriate action needed. Same had happened to me. You’ll probably need a second playthrough.
But apart from the game’s goal, this is our first introduction to Abe, a slave in a factory, who decides to take matters in his own hands and thwart the game’s world’s oppressor. For that end, Abe has to guide the aforementioned inhabitants with simple words and gestures in order to lead them to safety.
He is alone. He is afraid. But he won’t stop.
