Features
4 races to start your kingdom with, each with unique playstyles
Unlimited procedurally generated deserts, mountains, tropical islands, and frozen tundras
Dynamic weather and seasons unique to each biome
Hundreds of plants, animals, and items
A research tree with options for each race that unlock new blueprints and rooms
Outfit individual settlers with tools, weapons, and gear
Manage your kingdom and view other kingdoms on an expansive world map
Battle raiders, invading armies, and underground horrors
Choose from thousands of generated landscapes to make your new home. A desert oasis? The ribcage of a long-dead giant? A magical mountain range? Where you choose to settle will determine what resources you have at your disposal, what you encounter, and how challenging your experience will be.
Use the resources in your environment to build... well.. whatever you want! A sandstone castle in the desert? An underground fortress? Or, maybe, an island beach house? You decide!
Dig mines into the earth to uncover lost tombs, dormant gods, and lakes filled with creatures watching from the deep. Just make sure not to go too deep!
Welcome the less-than-friendly arrival of your neighbors with cold steel and hugs made of arrows. Ask questions later.
I've enjoyed the game so far, but the dev seems to have no interest in keeping it updated on GoG (version 10.0.21). It is currently 7 months and 10 patches behind the Steam version. I suppose I'd bump this up significantly if this situation changes, but GoG does not allow editing of reviews. As of right now, the GoG version is significantly neglected.
There seem to be a lot of these types of games popping up recently. Dwarf Fortress and Rimworld have created a pretty popular sub-genre of management games, but sometimes it is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
Well, I think that Odd Realm has potential, and it is worth checking out if you are a fan of the genre.
You have all the basics here; manage a small group of settlers, work the land, build homes, provide food, ect. So what makes this game stand out in a market that is quickly becoming saturated?
For one, I think it knows what it wants to be. This isn't just a soulless DF-clone; it definitely has a unique feel to it. I would say that Odd Realm is slightly more focused on the classic RPG formula as opposed to some other games in the genre. There is plenty of equipment management and loot (if you dare to look for it).
Another thing that is fairly unique about Odd Realm is the different races you can play as. This is a fairly overlooked feature, but it really is pretty unique among what else we have at the moment.
Of course, being in early-development, only 2 races are currently playable. But they really do completely change the necessary play-style, and almost certainly improve replayability. I imagine this will only improve as the game continues development.
The last thing I will say is that the graphics are all pixel based, and sometimes the font can be a little hard to read. Lots of little clusters of pixels that you will have to decipher. The art direction is strong, however.
The last thing I will say is that the music in Odd Realm is nothing short of perfect. It is reminiscent of classic jRPG soundtracks, and I can't hear the opening theme without thinking about Mitsuda (who composed for Chrono Trigger).
Is it worth trying out? If you are into colony management? Yes. It is promising, and I can see this becoming another classic of the genre.
If that doesn't interest you, then it probably won't change your mind on the genre.
1) Endless beta
2) Dev kinda lost interest
3) GOG version is consistently few patches behind
The idea is there, the basic gameplay loop is also there, it's the snail's pace of development that's killing it.
My first impression is that Odd Realm is Gnomoria in a top down view and includes the elements that didn't make it into the game.
I will say this game isn't for everyone but if you are the target audience I suspect you'll enjoy is. The graphics can be difficult to work with at first. Especially when trying to understand what a specific symbol is supposed to mean. There is a tool tip in one area that will help you understand but if you never look in that menu it will never make sense. I haven't reached end game or long lived settlements yet but it does feel like the content at that stage would be lacking.I've also only played humans. The other races sound interesting and I think will add a lot of variety to play styles.
Navigating the different layers can be difficult. There are ways to help but it takes a little bit to get use to how to use them. I think the big issue there is the perspective. A top down view with layers isn't easy to grasp depth. The art style wouldn't work with isometric views so I don't think there is a way to make it easier to understand.
The learning curve can be steep. I know it took me awhile to figure out how to actually bring the loot from an enemy to my base.
Feedback can be lacking when you try to do something. An example is I was trying to tame an animal but couldn't. It wasn't until hours later I realized the problem was I couldn't reach the animals because they were across the river. The UI elements said I could tame but nothing said the animal was inaccessible. I thought the game had a bug.
The controls in general can feel a little clunky but I'm not sure how to better approach it based on the current design. It's one of those items you just learn how to use and get past it.
For me the game is fun. As I've played more I've been able to understand more which makes the game more fun. I think a better way to introduce everything to new players would help a lot. The tutorial still left items out or left me wanting more information.
Fun game in the style of dwarf fortress, but a bit less intense - which I like. There is definitely space in the genre for something less insanely punishing all the time; I love DF but sometimes it's nice to chill a bit more.
The menus and navigation in OR are much more intuitive, and it's fairly easy learning curve to get into the game.
The LoFi graphics do make it kind of hard to tell what you are looking at sometimes, but usually it isn't a big deal.
The dev is definitely responding to player feedback and implementing good changes and updates. I'm pumped to see how the game progresses and hope that Waylon can keep pumping out enough updates to get everything done that is on the roadmap in a reasonable time.
