An excellent action/RPG hybrid with very unique gameplay. Your name is Jack Mower, a 20th century dude who just happened to be sucked into the world of Nox via his TV set. The world is in danger and you have to save it! But before you embark on your epic journey you must choose your path: warrior, wizard, or conjurer.
Choose the path of a warrior, and you will be able to equip and use all manner of swords, battle-axes, war hammers, and chakrams - though you’ll leave the magical mumbo-jumbo up to the Conjurer and Wizard classes. An enchanted weapon is the closest a Warrior gets to magic but that’s OK, because magic is for sissies.
As a Wizard you will explore the mystical art of spell casting, ranging from enemy-confounding illusions to devastating displays of metaphysical force. You’ll also learn to set magical traps containing deadly spell combinations to thwart the unsuspecting foe. Although you’ll have to renounce the use of ungainly swords and armor in the name of your art, you will still be able to wield a staff as a last-ditch physical defense.
If you choose a Conjurer you will be able to magically charm and summon creatures to do your bidding. You can even create a magical creature called a bomber which can wreak sorcerous havoc on your enemies. You’ll also get plenty of experience wielding staves and bows to fend off the few enemies who manage to slip past your minions.
Throwback Thursday Recommendation
We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!
Recommended by Kilg0re_Tr0ut from GOG Stream Team: Nox is a truly underrated game from Westwood Studios. Often written off as a "Diablo-clone", this is really a unique quest oriented action RPG. You play Jack, a young man who (along with his TV) is accidentally teleported to Nox by the evil Hecubah, and it is your job to right things in Nox and eventually defeat her. The story and gameplay adapts to accommodate one of three different character classes you have to choose from, the Warrior, who can't use magic, but has access to all armor and weapon types (except bows and staves), the Conjurer, who can use bows and crossbows, can use some spells, but specialize in summoning monsters that can fight alongside them, and the Wizard class, who specialize in the vast majority of spells in the game, and can even teleport and become invisible. This adds tremendous replayability as playing the game with each character makes for a completely different experience, basically giving you three games in one. Easy to get into, Nox is highly recommended for fans of the genre."

And, like all previous users said - it's not exaclty Diablo clone. It's more story and action oriented.
Limited EPX level, no level/items generations att all. But - have you try to cast sepatated magic spells, moving cyrcles over you target in battle dance in same time? Diablo doesn't have same spirit, only hard build calculation.
Always had a soft spot for Nox since it's release. Unfortunately overshadowed by D2, which ultimately caused it's demise. Multiplayer online was amazing and super fast paced. Although Nox isn't a long game, it hits all the spots required in my mind for a quality, individualized playthrough based on the faction you choose; barbarian, rogue, wizard.
Like I said before, it is not a long game. The game can be completed in full, on all 3 factions, in 1 day. I come back every once in a while to run through 1 of the 3 factions storylines and am always left with my 10 year old selve's sense of nostalgia.
Great voice acting, good music, great and often amusing sound effects. Some funny encounters throughout the game too. Cutscenes are very well done for a game released in 2000.
RIP Westwood Studios.
Whether it's 2000 or 2025, most people pick up Nox while looking for a solid Diablo clone. The bad news is that it has very little in comon with Diablo. The good news is that you're gonna love it anyway. Here's why:
- Each character class have their own campaign with their own ending
- The design is TIGHT
- Beautiful art
- Responsive controls
- Neat physics
- Music by Frank Klepacki
In fact, if you're following the game industry, go to mobygames right now and check the credits! Almost every single one of these people is regarded as an industry legend nowadays!
Is it better than Diablo? No, it's different. How so?
- The loot/equipment system is very basic. It's like they wanted to make a "numbers ARPG", but couldn't put the "numbers" in before the release deadline.
- All map layouts and item drops are pre-determined. So it has nothing to do with Diablo and its roguelike ancestors.
- No decision-making involved in level-ups. So calling it an "RPG" is a bit of a stretch.
In other words, it's more of a Zelda game than a Diablo one. But even if you're looking for a "Diablo-clone", don't let that dissuade you. Nox is well-worthy of your leisure time!
I think it was 2001. Love of my life left me because i was playing nox all the time. Oh she was really hot but after 4 hours she dumped me i was playing nox again.
Im married now have 2 kids, and i still play nox sometimes. its that good ;)
This game was westwood's answer to Diablo 3's release date being pushed back several times. The idea was to wait for diablo 3 to come out, wait until everyone was over it and release NOX. Unfortunately westwood was running out of funds and had EA nipping at their heels, so they were forced to release the game early and with little advertisement. This was also the age of everquest, so the only way you would have known about NOX was to walk into a store and pick the game because the box looked cool, or you played a demo put out by PCaccelerator ... Which is what I did, the demo blew my mind even though it was only a multiplayer showcase of only one class with only a few abilities. The actual game was fantastic, I get bored of games easy, but I've played through each character at least 3 times, there was also a sort of rough expansion for the game which I believe was released before it was finished, but it came with some of the shelf copies. Sadly, once EA took over westwood, the game died after a short, obscure life, and EA refuses to support the game in any way. I've been hoping against hope that someday, someone would remake NOX, I would kickstart the crap out of it.
