An excellent action/RPG hybrid with very unique gameplay. Your name is Jack Mower, a 20th century dude who just happened to be sucked into the world of Nox via his TV set. The world is in danger and you have to save it! But before you embark on your epic journey you must choose your path: warrior, wizard, or conjurer.
Choose the path of a warrior, and you will be able to equip and use all manner of swords, battle-axes, war hammers, and chakrams - though you’ll leave the magical mumbo-jumbo up to the Conjurer and Wizard classes. An enchanted weapon is the closest a Warrior gets to magic but that’s OK, because magic is for sissies.
As a Wizard you will explore the mystical art of spell casting, ranging from enemy-confounding illusions to devastating displays of metaphysical force. You’ll also learn to set magical traps containing deadly spell combinations to thwart the unsuspecting foe. Although you’ll have to renounce the use of ungainly swords and armor in the name of your art, you will still be able to wield a staff as a last-ditch physical defense.
If you choose a Conjurer you will be able to magically charm and summon creatures to do your bidding. You can even create a magical creature called a bomber which can wreak sorcerous havoc on your enemies. You’ll also get plenty of experience wielding staves and bows to fend off the few enemies who manage to slip past your minions.
Throwback Thursday Recommendation
We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!
Recommended by Kilg0re_Tr0ut from GOG Stream Team: Nox is a truly underrated game from Westwood Studios. Often written off as a "Diablo-clone", this is really a unique quest oriented action RPG. You play Jack, a young man who (along with his TV) is accidentally teleported to Nox by the evil Hecubah, and it is your job to right things in Nox and eventually defeat her. The story and gameplay adapts to accommodate one of three different character classes you have to choose from, the Warrior, who can't use magic, but has access to all armor and weapon types (except bows and staves), the Conjurer, who can use bows and crossbows, can use some spells, but specialize in summoning monsters that can fight alongside them, and the Wizard class, who specialize in the vast majority of spells in the game, and can even teleport and become invisible. This adds tremendous replayability as playing the game with each character makes for a completely different experience, basically giving you three games in one. Easy to get into, Nox is highly recommended for fans of the genre."

Easily one of the best ARPGs to exist. Unique in its style, smooth and fast gameplay, with Westwood's signature sense of humor. No matter how many new ARPGs keep coming out, this is the one I keep coming back to- time and time again. Rest in peace Westwood Studios
I missed Nox back in the day, but was aware that it was always as a very good Diablo-alternative. By playing it now after being utterly disappointed by the recently released Diablo III, I was hoping that Nox could lift up my spirits a bit regarding my ongoing search for a really good Action-RPG with a focus on the story. Sadly, that's not really the case with Nox!
It plays nice and smoothly and has some very good ideas - the different characters, the special abilities - but it lacks depth, features some overly long levels and has a very thin story.
It was fun to play it through once, but this is a game that will sadly not get stuck in my memory. So, in terms of real good Action-RPGs, I have to stick with Divine Divinity, Titan Quest and Dungeon Siege 2.
I see that many ppl here are having trouble in loading the game. I understand the frustration and techincally I don't blame them for not knowing how to fix the issue. I can't say if this works for other OS however for those with Win10; do the following.
Go to game directory ---> Find Game (which is an application extension) ---> Right click and click to properties ---> Select Compatibility ---> Tick Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 95 ---> Apply
Do the same with NOX (also an application extension)
And it did the job for me, no issues loading the game and works. Hope this helps to all who are facing the issue.
Cheers.
The plot reminds me of Unepic and Black Knight. Where the protagonist gets sent back in time to a medieval setting, and shenanigans ensue.
The game is a bit more action than RPG, it's not terribly similar to Diablo, you get way less abilities too. You can pick from 3 classes (Warrior, Conjurer, Wizard), I picked warrior, and 2 out of the 5 warrior abilities are borderline useless (Tread Lightly and Eye of the Wolf) As a warrior, you melee most enemies, occasionally blocking, and then use shurikens to deal with the real dangerous stuff.
About 80% of the game is relatively easy, then there's about 15% of the game where you have to avoid fairly deadly traps and fight enemies that hit like a brick. Then the last 5% of it is the game literally trolling you, at least, in my experience. The wizard's tower was bs at times with mages 1 or 2 shotting me, as well as spells that drop your weapon/shield gets incredibly annoying fast. Then there's that last bit at the end where you chase Hecubah through a cave of about 5000 enemies, and is about 90% luck dependent on making it to the door, and if you do, you get stunlocked by a cutscene for a moment, giving you about a 40% chance of not
getting mauled by the enemies that followed you.
When in doubt, God Mode. (F1, enter racoiaws, then enter set god (unset god to disable it)
The dungeon crawling is usually good, a good amount of secrets to be found too. Like some other RPGs, merchants overcharge out the ass for most things, and also repairs become way too expensive by the end of the game. The game didn't really need a durability system.
It's a decent game, but I got way too frustrated by the end of it to even consider playing as the other 2 classes.
