Someone doesn't understand strategy
The game starts ok if a little strange. Quickly it become a wave of 2D sprites that fade into the background in a blocky cavern...over and over and over. If you could get it for $7 it might be worth your time, otherwise I would pass. I am not sure where this great nostalgia factor comes from, but in my book a crappy graphics game is just that, not a nostalgic romp thru a time that never existed.

My favorite FPS of all time
I have poured so many hours into both the GOG and Steam releases of this game. After having a super-crappy day, this game is the kind of relaxing as-difficult-as-you-want-it catharsis I find is sorely needed. Nightmare Reaper takes the best ideas from a ton of legendary FPS games, adds some of its own amazing ideas, and throws a ridiculously long and enjoyable campaign at you, featuring grinding arenas and multiple minigames (these can be disabled in the options while not affecting the gameplay). Small game team vibe, with the excellent Andrew Hulshult on music. The game is a Boomy-Loot-Shoot distilled to a mirror shine, with tons of weapons and weapon modifiers. With the upcoming co-op update, I will without question pour hundreds more hours into this amazing game. I can't recommend this enough.

[FR] Un très bon FPS "à l'ancienne" !
Dans Nightmare Reaper, on incarne une jeune femme internée dans un hôpital pychiatrique pour une raison inconnue (on en apprendra davantage en progressant) et qui combat ses démon lors de son sommeil. Les niveaux à proprement parler sont générés aléatoirement (c'est l'agencement des salles qui change) et l'on passe des grottes à un village médiéval pour ensuite se retrouver dans une forêt, et après une ville etc... Étant donné le contexte onirique, ce n'est pas cohérent mais en même temps ça l'est. Niveau gameplay, c'est clairement hérité de Brutal Doom et c'est clairement là où le jeu brille le plus: les affrontement son brutaux et dynamiques, avec la possibilité de faire des doubles sauts et encore de faire des dash. L'arsenal d'armes est varié et très satisfaisant à utiliser. Chacune d'entre elles sont classées par couleurs, et évidemment on peut également tomber sur des armes uniques comme dans un Borderlands en plus péchu. On a également un arbre de talents qui se déverrouille en terminant des niveaux d'un mini-jeu de plateforme façon Mario en 8-bits. C'est pas mal, ça amène un peu de variété entre les niveaux. Visuellement ça mélange le vieux et le neuf: des textures très pixélisées mais avec des effets de lumière très chouettes qui donne un certain cachet au jeu. Seule ombre au tableau pour moi: l'optimisation graphique n'est pas au beau fixe, surtout dans les niveaux plus ouverts. Espérons que ce problème soit résolu au fil des mises à jour. Donc oui, je recommande cet excellent FPS défouloir et qui a un style bien à lui.

Very great doomclone styled game
As of 3/31/21 this game is absolutely playable. if you like old school shooters, you will like this game too. If you like doomclones but get nausea playing them, this is the game for you. i have this problem with doomclones and dont have that problem with this game. my favorite thing about this game is that it respects your time: levels are short and sweet. none of the gigantic labyrinths that open up monster closets whenever you pick up the red key, which you need to get the blue key, to get the yellow key to exit the level and each of these items are on opposite sides of the map from each other. this game has keys but they are handled in a way that it wont give you a headache running around the level. You dont have to hump every wall to find secrets either. They are indicated by something for a good chunk of the game, but i wont spoil what that indication is, and in later levels they start hiding secrets in different ways. you collect money instead of points, which you can and should use to upgrade your character in various ways. levels are randomly generated afaik. not full randomization but prebuilt rooms connected randomly. works very well. you collect weapons as you go, all weapons can have varying loevels of quality, levels above normal have random stat buffs/debuffs. you can only take one weapon with you at the end of the level. keeps the game-play interesting. can get some crazy guns. can also rarely spend money to randomize weapon stats, which is a gamble. The only thing i dont like is that some areas have are very tall, and it can be hard to see enemies if you are at a significant angle to them, as enemies are sprites and always remain perpendicular to the floor. the description for the game is very accurate.
