Mediocre

Ugly graphics, even for the time, except for the forest maps. Overly basic character models and most are ugly too. Portraits are low quality and of mostly ugly people. Music was bland except for the forest map music which was decent. Controls felt clunky, gameplay felt stiff. Campaign was boring, I kept it up because I hoped it would improve. Shadows of Udrentide was pretty bad too. Hordes of the Underdark was decent once out of the Undermountain. (This is from someone who really liked different Bioware games Dragonage:Origins and Baldur's Gate 1.) Why three stars then? Because of the extensive modding and Persistent Worlds available. You will get various levels of quality and vastly different experiences in the PWs. You will get bad and good DMs, settings built well or poorly, some with nothing to do, some with scripted quests, some that allow you to hunt other players, and so on. If you're lucky you will try a few and find one that resonates with you and has a fair DM team and plenty of things for your character to do. So if judging the artistic quality and the original campaign, I'd give this one star, but when taking into account that better content is out there, it could go as high as four or even five stars if you find the right PW, with the right people to play with and the right DMs, for you.

Its a not game its the toolkit

5 stars , and its not becasue for the child teen main story that could be fun if you play with your kids or simular younger gamers, its becasue of the toolkit, drag and drop with 3d objects and a scripts engine with basic c syntax and #includes to make magic, that makes this a great game awesome, and as you see they still work on the main exe file for better visuals and network. But enough of that with a DM or many DM's making it a STRAIGHT D&D it can even give you a nirvana experience.

I still struggle to enjoy playing NWN

I have the original retail boxed copy from way back when and I've attempted replaying it. Each time, I have not got far in the original campaign - not even out of the academy - before quitting and not returning. This time I got as far as the first few quests, but good grief is it clunky and just as clunky back in the olden times. I enjoy Dragon Age far more than Mass Effect (and both more than the cult favourite Jade Empire) but this is for hardcore RPG fans that may want to use the toolkit. If you lean more into action, a streamlined but still for the PC interface, and perhaps want to have more than just 1 AI follower at a time? Look elsewhere. But if this is on sale when you read this, a few quid isn't going to hurt.

Same cheap trash as it was years ago

I remember as I was finishing Throne of Baal there was a trailer on the CD. The trailer of Neverwinter Nights. It promises vast world, new dimension (3D duh), new ruleset, DM mode. And best of all — character transition from ToB! Well.. As the game came out I've searched the menus and the CD through and through to find a way to import my character. To no avail. But the reason that I don't like this game so much is its inconsistency. As I understand now it is a trademark of Trent Oster, who simply doesn't have even a slightliest bit of taste. He was a director and producer of NWN and he is a man behind Beamdog now. And by inconsistency I mean that the game world is falling apart constantly. In Baldur's Gate for example all the portraits were made in common style, the ambient and character sounds were adequate and in place, the UI was immersive. In NWN there was (and still is) an assortment of portraits in different styles and scale. The UI was (and still is) blunt and kinda beta looking. The ambient sounds are set in short loop and it is quite annoying. Voice is unreasonably overacted in some parts. Some characters with child model and portrait speaks with grown man voice and so on... Yeah. The ugly 3D graphics of that era is really not the worst thing in this game. The game got a feel of an alpha. Like Andromeda came after ME trilogy and was a disappointment to many, the same way NWN was for me after BG series — a huge disappontment. Alpha-like cheap trash. If you can't stand the font size, line height and other small things in BG:EE you know what I'm talking about. And it's a pity. Because the game got some really great things. You can actually build your own stories in it and play them through with your friends. And the vast amount of mods proves that it could be really fun and interesting. Fun and interesting alpha-like tasteless cheap trash. Still is.

Linux—Everything Works,and Works Well

If ever a game deserved a 5 out of 5, it is Neverwinter Nights. From an immersive gaming experiencing with a great story line, to a multiplayer experience that was revolutionary for it's day. I've seen a number of complaints in reviews on this page about Beamdog's Enhanced version and I'm not understanding what that is all about. The game works perfectly, far better than the original did, or does, on any version of Windows. It looks amazing, far better than the original did. It's smooth as farm fresh butter on local artisanal bread, made by a cooking genius. My only quibble with all of Beamdog's Linux ports is that they are a little too hard core. I'd prefer the game files in Documents, rather than hidden away in the "approved" Linux file structure (".local/share" if you are looking).
