I feal most of the time that I am in a book reading the plot and taking decisions that will affect the game.
This is a story driven game that let you manage a ship and a crew, read news all over the world, face priates and make strategic decisions.
the combat system is based on the level of the character + special abilitys + dice rolling which make it statistics based mechanism but I didn't felt it not fair, if you are strong enough you will win fights.
This game have one problem though - the loading screen takes forever. beside that this game is really enjoyable and people who want to wander the seven seas and enjoy a game with Moby-Dick story than it's a great game for him.
This game scratched a few itches for me. I loved Slay the Spire and while this game lacks the deck-building aspect, the dice rolling was a nice mechanic. Leveling up was relatively simple. I even liked the merchant/quest aspect of the game where you can take blubber and sell it at the most profitable ports.
Only reason why I'm knocking off one star is that it lacks replayability. In my single playthrough I saw the same events over and over. There's not a lot of variety there.
My general rule of thumb is that I'd like to get 1 hour of entertainment per $2 spent. I completed the game in just over 13 hours and since I got it on sale, it was well worth the money.
It's a fun game and I definitely recommend it if it looks intriguing.
I've always been facinated by whaling. I remember fondly my visits to the New Bedford whaling museum and I've read Moby Dick 3 times (big fan of Malville of course).
A whaling game has always been a dream of mine and I was delighted to discover the existence of Nantucket a while ago...Well it's not quite what I was wishing for but it does the job.
The shantys (which, with the latest version of the game, play on 'till the end of the tune) give the atmosphere by themsleves, the rest being well done makes it so that you do feel like your the captain of a whaler. Unfortunatly, as many have said, the events repeat themselves alot after a while, but this ain't a AAA game after all.
The economic side is simple but enough to keep you interested, the leveling and the battles like wise, simple but very satisfying...it's a shame it's nothing like a real whale hunt (The very heart of the struggle is, to me, harpooning the great beast and then managing to get your lancer to the front of the boat to deliver the killing blow...how could they not implement that?), but again, it's a fair shot by an indie studio...this game is alot like "caravan", the old flash game "kind of based" on fallout.
Essentially, it's a good but limited game, kind of game you'll play through the end if you have the time, or it can become your "go to game" when you have 15 minutes between putting the kids to bed and your last snack, personnaly, this and FTL are the 2 only games I,ve been using these last 2 years in this role.
When on special it's amptly worth it's price, good indie game for experiencing (somewhat) the golden age of whaling or killing a few minutes if a battle of life and death with a leviathan, and it gets you to discover the "Roaring Trowmen" whom sing the shantys...seriously their one of the bands on my playlist driving to and back from work.
Doe the author have to print the disclaimer "No Whales were killed during the development or playing of this game". Really! It is a simple but well designed game that loosely represents the time of American Whaling. Whales were plentiful and hunted for oil, food, and Ambergris. I have played it for hours without a single issue. An excellent indication of the competency of the developer. I would never recommend the hunting of actual whales but as an RPG gamer, Nantucket is well worth the money.
Hi, Nantucket is a whale hunt and seafaring strategy game on the pannable draggable world map, take missions, sail anywhere, buy food, water, grog, wood, hire rename crew and upgrade hitpoints and keep good crew (battle reloads required until skilled). You will upgrade a lot of stats and assign skills also to your crew. I liked the choices and mini storms and atmospheric sounds as you sail, sadly no map zoom, combat is a dice (may fall on slots with your weapons or other assigned) and you click drag to the enemy or heal yourself or crew, a presumed button is not there to attack or heal, ex: Whales, Sharks, Canoes, Pirates, and but you get the spoils (i.e. blubber, oil, food, etc). Random events and conversate text choices get better allowing trait choices to be upgraded constantly also to your crew. All in all a good experience but combat dulled it with no easy setting causing upset time wasted on reloads, long depth gameplay, bigger ships with cannon require upgraded skills to be met. HD High resolutions up to 4K is seen available but fails to fit fullscreen some resolutions (maybe HDMI cable fault), perhaps a mod or update may fix also for larger text sizes for some enthusiasts. Mouse only needed but keyboard and gamepad is available. A title to remember our history will always be welcome.
