Mutant Football League: Dynasty Edition is a hellishly brutal arcade-style football game which delivers intense online multiplayer action, deep strategy, and deadly humor.
Fantastical arenas full of ruthless fans and deadly traps set the stage for mayhem in every contest that allows players to win by highest score or by killing and eradicating their opponents - a feat made easier as teams use their unique “Dirty Tricks” such as “Bribe the Ref” to overturn a call or having a player become “Ginormous” to grow in size and pummel the puny combatants in their path. Whenever a game begins you’ll quickly discover the only predictable element is broken bones.
Dynasty Mode is a single player experience where you become the coach and GM of your favorite Mutant Football League team and take a group of unproven rookies and turn them into monstrous all-stars by winning multiple Mayhem Bowls over several seasons to become the league’s next Dynasty.
Mutant Football League: Dynasty Edition is the spiritual successor to the retro classic Mutant League Football, designed by the creator of the original game which means you can expect deep strategy gameplay, bone-crunching, tooth-shattering hits, and a roster of ghouls delivering tongue-through-cheek humor. Oh, and blood. Lots of blood.

- A lot of gore
- Unique "dirty trick plays" to help your team to victory.
- Free agency & player trades.
-Get $$$ from winning games. Use $$$ in FA or to purchase XP.
- Players also gain XP from completing their own goals. XP is used for stat upgrades.
- Funny twist on player and team names.
- Easy to pass time with & to play for fun.
- Can be rewarding to win your dynasty during the first season (Team starts off at 40 Overall) . Afterwards, you might want to turn up the difficulty upon completing all 5 seasons in the dynasty mode once you've gotten use to the game.
- Leaderboard for dynasty mode
- The multiplayer is just a single game mode. However, if you care about stats, there is a leaderboard multiplayer as well.
MFL was a fantastic little Blitz-style football game on release. The gameplay was very well "tuned" so it resembled football while still being challenging and unique. Seasoned football gamers might actually need to work to get wins, but you never felt cheated and user input on the controls seemed to actually make a difference. I logged many an hour playing with the various bizarre monster parody versions of NFL franchises before shelving it for a while. That version was 4.5 stars.
Fast forward to the current version, and the devs have added more teams and stadiums to the mix. The gameplay has changed, however. Now the user's input is less impactful and the CPU can seemingly make plays at will that make you feel like a spectator instead of a participant, which is always a BIG problem for a sports video game. The fun factor from the prior version is gone. The current version is 2.5 stars.
On sale, as it is now, it's still a worthy purchase if you enjoy football video games and haven't yet played it. The graphics are quite nice and MFL is actually a pleasant change from overly realistic sports sims. If you never played it before the fun was more or less patched out, you may still enjoy this! It was challenging but fun and fair - now it's a bit unwieldy to control and feels unnecessarily scripted. A pity.
Finally, about the reviews mention bribing the ref as a problem - to be fair, you can turn that "feature" off completely as well as adjust the speed of gameplay to make it more forgiving. There are options to make the game a bit more "realistic" if you want.
I was about to buy this game on sale, but luckily, I thought of looking for a demo first. I found one on Steam, installed it, and was ultimately disappointed. This is a game that wastes way too much time with gimmicks, to the point that the gimmicks become the center of the game over playing actual football.
For example, if the other team bribes the ref, no matter what you do on the next play, even score a touchdown, the ref will call a 10-yard penalty on you (and remove any points scored). To counter this happening again on the next play, you'll have to bribe the ref as well, or attack the ref, and since the ref survives the first attack, and calls a penalty on you, you'll have to attack the ref again on the next play to kill the bribed ref and get a new ref. So now, you've gone through three or four plays surrounding the ref, had two or three penalties called on you, and have to sit and wonder if you're going to get to play some actual football.
Not to mention, when the opponent hits me with a gimmick like electric shock powers, I then to have to figure out which gimmick I need to hit them back with. So, the game becomes more about figuring out which gimmicks to pull off and when. Also, players die or get injured way too quickly. The gameplay needs a lot of restructuring in order to make it fun.
There's really no excitement around the game of football; it's simply a game about gimmicks that happens to use the sport of football as the background. If the gimmicks excite you enough to enjoy the game, that's cool, but I certainly wasn't into it. I'd rather the game be centered on playing football but with the gimmicks being more of a side show rather than the main show, like the classic NFL Blitz games. If you're coming into Mutant Football League expecting an NFL Blitz-like experience, you're not going to get it.
In short, buyer beware. Play a demo before you even think about buying this game, even on sale.
Game is amazing fun with or without friends. If you're in a mood for ridiculous arcady football fun, look no further. Can't reccomend this game enough.
Fun to play, but man does it have a (almost) deal-breaker issue. The AI cheats soooooo bad in the playoffs you want to scream. Playing in the normal mode I made it to the play-offs with a 14 and 1 record. In the last game for the Mayhem Bowl championship. I lost. All of the sudden my receivers couldn't catch, my QBs couldn't throw, my defenders couldn't tackle, and my RBs kept fumbling. Eight turnovers! The opposing team, of course, didn't turn the ball over once. In another series, I lost in the playoffs by forfeit because the opposing team killed all of my linebackers. Dropping the difficulty level takes all of the challenge out of the game.
