Too flawed to be great!
First of all this is the DOS-Version and not the Amiga-Version but you only get the manual for the Amiga-Version. In my opinion the DOS-Version is inferior to the Amiga-Version. For example in the DOS-Version the computer can hunt the wampus and doing so provides a large unbalanced amount of money. You can get up to 1000$ per turn which is way to much. Another example is that the racial benefits doesn´t work or there is usually only a single land auction per game. apart from the differences in the version the game isn´t well designed and balanced. All of the fancy strategies advertised in the manual doesn´t work. Getting rich by creating shortages or monopolies don´t work because the AI and every advanced player will and can quickly counter it. You will quickly notice that the game is basically reduced to mining smithore in the lower difficulty levels and mining/finding crystite in the higher ones. Producing medium to large amounts of food, energy (or smithore) will put you in an severe disadvantage and you are nearly guaranteed to loss the game by a wide mark. The best strategie is mostly to take one valley plot for food and to plain plots next to each other for energy to be autark and the rest of the plots will be crystite (or smithore). The replayability of M.U.L.E. isn´t really that high. Moreover the controls are clunky and sometimes unresponding. Also the game speed isn´t well adjusted. Parts of the game is way to fast to react especially with the control issues but countering it by reducing the cycles will slow down other parts of the game to much. All in all the game can be fun for a game or two because of the nice concept and the nostalgia but is too flawed to hold up in the long term. I also would recommend to get the Amiga-Version if you would like to give it a try!
