Sophisticated AI will challenge you in combat and in your strategic plans.
Altough a lot of people are telling to skip this game and move straight to warband i can't help but love this one. It looks very similar to warband but i got a very different feel from it, you don't have factions conquering eachother without player intervention like in warband for example. Can still recommend buying it, escpecially when on sale, right now its only €2,49
I can imagine that this is someone's cup of tea, but it is certainly not mine. The combat is not bad, but certainly not without its flaws. Its controls are too limited, and there are too few win-conditions, meaning that if it is you and another horsemen left, you'll be running circles around each other until the end of time, because neither of you can catch up with the other. And this is really all the game has to offer.
Tournaments are a waste of time. You are given 'a weapon' and told to fight. Never mind that your PC may be specced to another fighting style, and you and the other archer are just shooting arrows at one another until either side runs out and has to resign to punching (advice, run up, start a punching fight, then draw your bow while the NPC keeps punching for no damage). Or worse, you get a bow and get told to deal with a few swordsmen.
The same applies to the overworld, when you have too few men in your band to defend yourself properly, you'll be hounded by other gangs who keep chasing you down until you run out of men (just hit surrender, because leaving a man behind to hold them off doesn't actually keep them from chasing you on the world-map). When you do have enough men in your band, everyone runs away at a faster pace than you can manage.
There is no story or worldbuilding to speak of, that I have found at least. No reactions to the backstory which is used to create your PC, and the various kingdoms are nigh indiscernible from one another beyond the coloured names on the overworld map. The towns themselves can vary between alright and bare-minimum effort and the overworld map itself is awfully dull.
I can see how player-made mods could turn this into something interesting, maybe even good, but by itself this is not worth the time or money.
Initially I did not like this game. It seemed to have very little substance. But after putting a little work into it I found out how wrong I was. It is currently my favourite game. The lack of story is not an issue for me. I have become the story. In this computer generated world, you have no more special status than all the NPG. And they (the AI) seem to be quite clever. You have to fight for every inch of recognition. Bravo TaleWorlds!
I genuinely admire the effort the team put into this game. There are lots of cool ideas here, but sadly, the end result is awkward and clunky at best, boring and hollow at worst. The whole stuff feels like an alpha build, to be completely honest. The quest system is painful, making any meaningful progress is nerve-crackingly slow, and let's not talk about the Benny Hill chasing scene generator world map.
Later entries may be more polished, and I think I can understand if someone can overlook the problems here. Personally, I regretted all those couple of hours I invested into trying to enjoy this game.
It has very very poor graphics but it's a wonderful medieval battle simulator
By the way Warband is even more realistic, adds lots of choices and fixes a lot of bugs.
Can't wait for M&B II
