Flawed, but one of my favorites

This is one of my favorite games of all time, despite being flawed in many ways. Let's get the bad parts out of the way first: - The story is mediocre and just ends abruptly. It's like they planned something 10x larger and more detailed, but them had to chop it down to fit the deadline - The combat feels like an afterthought. The game didn't need it and it's badly done - The interaction of your character with the game world is a bit quirky, which sometimes causes you to miss and die in confusing and frustrating ways - Despite being totally linear, it's still easy to get lost That said, this is a fun and unique parkour experience - once you get used to the quirkiness it flows beautifully and just feels amazing. There are some quite spectacular sequences of running and physics-defying jumps and stunts. The game is played in first-person perspective and that was a very good decision: it really adds to the immersion. The entire game is spent in a city (concrete everywhere) but there is a lot of variety in the areas that you visit - with both indoors and outdoors areas. The game is linear, but there are often a few different paths you can take to reach your goal. Visually, despite being dated, it's still quite beautiful in my opinion. They chose a visual scheme with emphasis on strong colors which create very pleasing contrasts between the "concrete" and the other elements. The general atmosphere (sounds and music and such) fits the game perfectly. The story mode is relatively short. There is a speedrun mode for story mode chapters and some time trial maps which are all about racing between checkpoints trying to beat the top times. Sadly, there are few of these, and the game fundamentally lacks replay value (aside from relieving the experience again). To summarize, this is an amazing game when it flows right and it is quite unique, but be prepared for some frustrating quirks and weak story. I strongly recommend it, but wait for a substantial discount.

Too linear, not enough freedom

The free running is pretty entertaining, but you're very limited in the area you can travel. You almost feel like you're simply running on a rail through most of the game. There are some shinning moments when you're moving across a rooftop and you have a couple of ways to go to get to your destination, but in the end, you're still very limited. The FPS aspect of the game is clunky, it doesn't feel smooth. Too often I find myself running straight at a "blue" while he shoots at me and even a few steps away I'm not taking damage. I can disarm/takedown or punch/kick the badguy down. I do enjoy the takedown/disarm actions, they are fun to initiate, plus it puts the bad guy's weapon in your hand immediately for use instead of needing to pick it up off the ground. Fighting also feels a bit forced and too simple. One or two bad guys around you, simply manuver out of their line of sight and wait for them to turn the corner and simply punch them a few times or run and slide kick or run and jump kick to initiate a simple staggering attack, then follow up with a few punches. The artwork and graphics are probably the most entertaining aspect of the game. The story was lacking and very easy to figure out who the bad guys are. There are few minor gaps in the story as well, these gaps don't make or break the game, but a little more build up of the story and characters would have been nice. A fairly short game that, to me, outside of maybe the entertainment of the free running, doesn't really offer a lot of replay value. 4-6 hours to clear the game, depending on how much time you take to work on takedowns and your free running skills. The game is enjoyable enough to warrant a purchase on a good sale.

75% Portal, 25% dogshit

This is an absolute delight as a parkour game. With only some minor teething problems, it delivers spatial problem solving as well as Portal and better than Prince of Persia, all in unbroken 1st person with only 2 main inputs ("up action" and "down action"). Unfortunately, this jewel is sharing a room with the worst parts of Far Cry: mandatory, awkward gunplay and melee combat & 1st person cutscenes in which everything important happens. Not everyone cares about plot but everyone DOES feel pacing. I think it's a shame that such a lovingly crafted vision of the future is paired with such juvenile writing. But the bigger issue is that, up until the final few (worst) levels, there's little to differentiate them at all. In every one, the police chase you almost immediately (to the point where it loses all impact and you notice the artificial danger) and you flee through the same office/rooftop environments while your earpiece directs you to the next cutscene trigger. This really feels like a collection of demo levels slapped together.

Concept game

This game is all about doing parcour through the levels while someone is shooting at you. Not much else to it. Its interesting to play because of its original concept but becomes tedious as the game progresses. The controlls feel a little clunky. The combat moves are difficult to time and unfortunately there are a lot of combat situations. Visualy it has a destinct comic-like look where the primary colors and contrast are exaggerated which sometimes looks bland. It tells its story trough short animations, that felt detatched from the rest of the experience. Oh, and the protagonist is a terrorist.

A faire au moins une fois.

C'était un classique du catalogue EA, c'est très plaisant de le voir arriver sur GoG, cela permet enfin à tout le monde de mettre un peu la main dessus. Un peu avant l'essor des Yamakasis et l'envol médiatisé de la discipline du parcours, jouer à ce jeu était un vrai bol d'air frais dans la vague FPS, cela pouvait des fois donné légèrement le tourni tant que l'on avait pas l'habitude de ce genre de vitesse de mouvement de point de vue. Évidemment maintenant le jeu a vieilli, la simplicité graphique et du choix de sa palette de couleur, ainsi que les cinématiques en animé, malgré tout un peu simpliste, permettent tout de même de ne pas lui faire accuser trop le coups des années. Le gameplay basique permet de se concentrer sur la fluidité des mouvements, et le tout s'enchaine assez rapidement vu le fil 'rouge' clairement mis en avant pour indiquer le chemin. A faire une fois, pour la culture vidéo ludique.
