Really great storytelling

So first things first: Gameplay-wise the game is truly quite weak and I understand the other low rankings because of that. It has basically no challenge and "walking sim" is maybe the closest definition. The reason why I want to defend the game with a 5 star rating is, that it happens really rarely for me nowadays that the ambivalent meaning keeps me thinking for that long. The morbid visuals and the rather dark setting are painted beautiful and I don't think it would work in the shape of a comic, a novel or a movie. I still believe the game, coming together with it's "busy work" that somewhat underlines the story is the perfect format. I don't want to spoil any part of it, just want to give my statement, that people like me, who thought walking sims are not for them, suddenly saw in this game the one that changed their mind. Really loved it in the end

Design/sound yay - gameplay/story nay

I really wanted to like this game more. Great drawings, solid and fitting soundtrack, the setting got potential too. Alas, the lame, monotonous gameplay consisting of simple platforming that feels and controls rather lethargic and a few easy puzzles left me pretty bored. Also it's told in a pseudo-melancholic/nostalgic tone that absolutely didn't click with me, probably because you never get any chance to relate with the characters or story at all. It stays way too shallow; you start as a stranger in a strange world, meet a few strangers along the way, and leave as a stranger.

More of an interactive storybook

Minute of Islands is beautifully drawn, and has a very intriguing story; but gameplay is minimal. You go to a location, find your path up and down (there's no enemies or hazards); if you go off the path you mind some "memories" that enrich the story. There's a couple of items, but their use is obvious, there are no challenging puzzles. The story is told slowly, in a reminiscent manner, and every interaction is animated. It's pretty, but it can get on your nerves that every time to take a lift it has to do the whole animation, and every time Mo crawls out of a duct she has to take a few seconds to dust herself off. Still, from an artistic point of view it's very neat, like an animated comic. If what you're craving for is a challenge for your reflexes or your brain, this is not it, though.

Slow paced game, fit for self-reflection

While it is true that this game does not make use of all the potential mechanisms that a game brings with it, if one takes it as a piece of media, this makes for a perfectly approachable piece of art that requires the player to take things slowly enough to give space for some deep self-reflection, which is indeed primed often through the game. I didn't particularly appreciate the soundtrack, while I certainly could appreciate the sound design and especially the visuals, which made it look like a hybrid between Nausicaa, eXistenZ, Doug and a Lovecraft novel. If you come in with the right expectation, accepting that not all games will offer hours of difficult puzzles, fast pixel-exact platforming and tons of pointless lore, you will like it as much as I did.

Beautiful game !

I enjoyed this game very much and had about 12 hours of game-play savoring it all slowly. The graphics are incredible and the story touching. Navigating the game was easy, as it is solving its puzzles. I would not agree that this game is just a story, far from it ! What I did not like in particular is those parts of the game when Mo becomes really negative, depressive and even aggressive and violent in order to get what she wants. That somehow takes away from the game and its poetic narrative and I do not see the reason for that at all.
