Nearly any minor problem has been fixed if not reworked in a better way, such as some abilities which were too powerful or, on the other hand, underpowered.
Though I have to say: the orc captains speeches can be frustrating and are frustrating, especially when the game blocks everything to make you concentrate on the one talking. Sadly, there is no official way to turn this off the Nemesis system being one of the core features of the game.
Summing it up, it's a Shadow of Mordor expanded and enhanced. If you enjoyed the first, it's guarenteed you'll like this one as well.
The game builds upon the Shadow of Mordor and has an 'interesting' spin on the Tolkien lore.
The gameplay is fun, but it severely outstays its welcome.
They really tried to improve on the success of their Nemessis system introduced in the prequel - so much that even the story often falls somewhat shallow just to adhere to the game mechanics. Everything is about building and improving the Orc army, and taking/defending strongholds. This fell well with their inclusion of lootboxes & microtransactions in the original release and it still bears its scars.
The endgame (to get the "true ending") is just a grind, plain and simple - but at least it was reduced from the original release.
Consequentially I got really tired of everything by the time I got to the 2nd DLC.
One of the games I'd have to say it's just "too long"...
This probably one of those games you have on Steam but want you want the full ownership. For me personally, wanted a drm-free game and for some reason the gog version runs better. Even though it is missing quite a few features but if you really like the game, on sale I say its worth getting in my opinion.
This game is a rather interesting mix of several elements. First, there is the great stuff, the gameplay is fun, and makes you as the main character feel powerful. Just a few things you can do: you can fights hordes of orcs at once with your sword, bow, smashing the ground with fire, poison, cursing them and mind-controlling them to fight each other.
Powerful orc captains sometimes have immunities and you can choose to kill them or, if you're into that, embarrass them, shame them, let them run for their lives so that when you meet them again, they will remember you. This is the core of the nemesis system that this game takes from its predecessor. A great concept and thousands of lines of orcs saying things. From pissed off to insane jabbering to singing orcs, it's all there.
When you capture fortresses and mind-control captains, you can make them fight each other to either become more powerful or to just entertain you, which is fun.
Now, the parts of the game that are not good. While the main character Talion has interesting conversations with Celebrimbor, the story is paper thin. It's mostly "I have to take this fortress so that I'm powerful enough to challenge Sauron" and that's pretty much it. There's the usual diversity pandering with a random she-elf that is so much less fun than any of the awesome orcs.
The DLCS are equally disappointing. You get to play the uninteresting elf. Yaaay. Then you get to play another side character that was flat and unfun, and oh, by the way it is timed and has no story whatsoever. Why the game designers decided it would be a good idea to play a less fun version of the main character instead of any of the awesome orcs for which they already have an expansive system that affords massive replayability, I will never guess.
So, if you prefer a lot of slaughtering orcs in creative ways and having fun, buy this. If you expect any decent Lord of the Rings lore - this is not for you.
I'm a huge fan of the source material and the original game, and this one checked nearly all the boxes for me! It took longer than I expected to complete all the side missions, so expect over 30 hours of playtime if you're a completionist. It was worth the journey!
It's probably for the best that GOG left out the multiplayer for whatever reason. In its original realase, after you advanced several levels in MP it became horribly broken by modders/cheaters/hackers who modified their save files to create near-invincible orcs to defend their fortresses. Unfortunately Monolith/WB never seemed to be interested in fixing that problem. Maybe in a few years there will be a community mod to restore MP when people who are still interested in the game will play honesty. There's still tons of fun to be had with SP and you can raid several fortresses still there. I ended up playing MP while it was still online until I got to the tiers of MP fortresses with 100% cheated orcs, at which point I figured I had "beaten" the MP!
Probably not fair, but I'm only giving 3/5 stars because of how much emphasis Monolith and WB put on MP when this game came out, only to abandon the title after what seemed like less than a year, having never patched-out the cheated orcs problem which sprung up almost immediately. I bet this title would have had massive replayability, comparable to communities like R6 Vegas, etc if they had fixed that cheating issue.
