If you like playing with complex systems, I think you'll love this. Microtopia is well thought out, well polished, and has a ton of content packed in. It's clearly the product of hard work from passionate developers. The microscopic world of electronic ants is charmingly rendered while still easy to comprehend and manipulate. The chill background music practically hypnotizes me into a relaxing flow state when I play. Growing your population of ants in easy at first, but as you reach the population capacity of your current colony design, you have to start looking for new ways to grow. Your population capacity isn't an artificial limit, but the real effect of both how fast you produce baby ants and how long each ant lives. Death of each ant is inevitable, but the colony is a super organism that lives on. Population growth involves maximizing energy production (primarily to feed the queen who hatches all your new ants) and also investing in ways to extend your ants' lifespans. That includes affixing augmentations to old ants to refurbish them and empower them to do new things. Pushing the population ceiling this way is a fun challenge, and unlike anything I've seen in other factory-mechanic games. For example, those screws you've been manufacturing? You can set up a building to affix a screw to an ant and give him a drill nose. That will extend his lifespan and empower him to go mine for new resources and new production options. This game is definitely not trying to be Factorio. From reading other reviews, I think some folks went in wanting it to be, and were thrown off by the different concepts. But Microtopia does what it sets out to do really well, and provides all the tools you need to design and automate a bustling colony. There is some micro management, but not a lot, and it serves to give you a sense of active engagement in guiding your colony's organic expansion.

Great relaxing game with unique setting

Micro ants in a micro world. Already spent many hours playing the prologue, factory game with some special twists that set it apart from the others. Really enjoyed the different challenges as the game grows and makes you rethink your designs as it literally evolves.

Game breaking defect ended session

Ran into a game breaking defect-- counter gates were not working. You are supposed to be able to use a counter gate to prevent workers from entering a path as long as there are X workers on the path already. (Counter gates are configurable for X.) The intent is to prevent you from over saturating a path with too many workers and waste logistics efficiency. Unfortunately, after running into this bug I thought "I'll just save and reload to see if the bug goes away." Only to discover that I could not create a new save. Thus ended my gaming session with zero progress due to two game breaking defects. NOTE: This is early access, so I'll attempt to reboot and keep and eye out for patches.

Fun but...

Its tons of fun in the beginning. When you have to start reaching a set population number to proceed, it gets old.

If you like DELETING and REBUILDING...

This a puzzle not a management game. You could find it amusing at first, typical factory mechanics, bring a resource to a place, create another, but there are too few resources to consider it a factory game. The game revolves around logistics not resources. Ants are your logistics here, you create paths for them like if you were designing a PCB board (hence the electronics esthetics of the game) as board design was clearly an inspiration to the dev. The problem is that you have to constantly destroy and rebuild all your logistics. The game forces you to make drastic changes to your layout once you more or less get to understand the game. Not only that; the difficulty in the game comes from the ants; you need special ants for special tasks but they live for a couple of seconds, meaning you have to constantly produce ants, use the logistics paths to create the correct ones and the more the specialized they are, the less they live. Just have this in mind: this is not a factorio game; logistics use switches of various types to automate the ants, meaning all your layouts have to be very well thought out, but remember that the game will force you to destroy it all and start again to accommodate new mechanics as the game progresses. Yes, in the bottomline, you are destroying your "board" and rebuilding it all the time. All the time you put into your logistics is erased with a new forced modification that is needed to progress. The game is not unplayable or bug ridden. Its in my opinion, boring and its one of those games that break golden rules: "Do not make the player realize he is doing the same thing over and over" AND "Do not force the player to destroy his constructs". I honestly don't like to have to constantly undo what I did a minute ago. I feel my time was wasted and everything I do will have to be undone in seconds. If you find these kind of "adapting" mechanics fun and can endure destroying all you built to rebuild it again with modifications, maybe you will like this game. To me, this is a "sandbox's" worse face.
