Logical sequel to 2033, and still one of the best first-person post-apocalyptic immersion experience to this day. Unique ruined-russia landscapes, even better than Stalker's, good shooting sensations with nice looking built-from-scratch weapons, and a well-written serious story that reminds us that war never changes ;-).
Though totally linear, it's that kind of game which makes you feel like it's worth your money and your time. You like FPS, post-apo, total immersion? Just buy it and play it in the dark, you won't regret it.
Notice that it requires a powerful system to run perfectly.
Metro Last Light is a benchmark when it comes to the post-apocalypse, for good reason.
Enemy variety is pretty wide, with everything from neo-Nazis underground to bears above ground. Most enemies are mutated, and more than willing to separate your head from your body, so keep the magazine full at all times.
Speaking of magazines, Metro uses the ammo you own (military-spec ammo, that is) as the currency. With it, you can purchase ammo produced in the Metro, upgrade and purchase weapons, and refill supplies such as first-aid kits and gas mask filters (keep both topped up, seriously). While possible to avoid using it, at some point you will run out of cheap ammo and have to use the expensive stuff, so maintaining trigger discipline is a must.
This in mind, using stealth kills and throwing knives, it's possible to cut down on ammo usage. You have an indicator on your watch which lights up when you can be seen, so keeping that light off is of utmost importance (similar to the Thief games).
Storywise, this game builds off the events of 2033 so if you played this first (like I did), it can be a little confusing with some of the things that happen. The campaign is very linear, occuring mostly in corridor after corridor. With that said, wander off the beaten path and find rewards such as ammo, filters, and journal entries (it's the apocalypse. How else would you get your feelings out?)
Atmosphere is something that can make or break a game such as this, requiring the ability to unsettle with nothing going on. This game achieves it with a sense of creeping dread, especially above ground, that can and will leave you on edge. The remains of Moscow are barren, with remnants of the past popping up continually and really driving up the level of paranoia. You never quite know what is waiting around the corner, so don't relax too soon.
Overall, Metro Last Light is one of my favorite games of the 2010s (and since I hate horror, that's something) and I would totally recommend it.
There hasn't been much improvement in image quality and model details, and a lot of effort has been put into the plot performance.
Some large scenes have been added for players to explore and play, and several of them can clearly feel the battle performance of "Oh, this is boss battle" and have done well,
The plot also gave the first protagonist a very good ending
My 2nd attempt at a review, my first one was 3k chars too long for GoG well here goes.
The game is like fallout3, If fallout3 had levels instead of open world.
The game blends FPS combat and Stealth, Obviously the emphases here is on stealth as they are very stingy with the ammo in this game.
The GoG time to beat times are pretty accuracy there is a lot of dialog to listen to and it probably took me 12+hours taking my time and also I sneak thru almost the entire game.
The combat is frantic, dialog is generally well written.
You're on a guided tour of a post nuclear war world, clearly the dev's spent a great deal of time on trying to build a compelling world and tell a story which they accomplished.
There are a lot of scripted events, and not much exploring given the game uses levels kinda similar to Doom if you can picture that.. with "stations" that serve as towns for story telling, information and resupply interspersed between levels.
I guess this is a good time to point out the game has nudity particularly in 1 part of the game, nothing too explicit and It felt organic and fit the setting not just added for the sake of it like some 80s' slasher movie.
I applaud a studio being bold enough to not shy away from it though, the game feels gritty and it just adds to it.
The texturing and models are fine, nothing too special, but the particle effects and lighting are extremely good and have aged well, The music is also dynamic and helps enhance the mood quite well.
The two negative things I will say about the game is this.
There is a decent variety of monsters but you typically end up fighting the same 2 or 3 over and over, also the saving system is insane using a check point auto save and no manual saving.
You can later load a previous level though.
Best way to put it is this is like a good book or a movie, You don't feel like you have much control, you're along for the ride but what a ride.
Sadly this means replay value is pretty low.
No amount of difficulty should warrant keeping a save file and backtracking to numbers of chapters ago, just to recover ammo. And in the event that player is out of ammo, there should be a stealth alternative to get past the level.
