METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

like the title says, best or at least one of the best hack and slash games. the story is a odd and confusing but you don't play this game for the story. you play it for the game play, the soundtrack and for the iconic memes. the mechanics and the controls of the combat is one of the best i have ever seen. like to parry you need to press the attack button + w, the way you primarily get healed isnt through health packs but by charging up your zandatsu, cutting enemies in half and stealing their spine which will also set your zandatsu meter to full creating a really awesome game loop where you dont ever want to run from a fight. it might take a while to fully grasp but when you do its great. you know how people who play dark souls say when they defeat a boss in that game they get the biggest fattest dopamine rush? With this game you feel like you are on meth. when you get knocked down. you don't want to run away you will come running back to them, hungry to take them out. i just wish this game actually goes on sale. i have the game on a different platform and as much as i would love to have a drm free version of this game. i do not want to spend the full $40 price for basically another copy of a game i already have but from a different store.

Great for mindless fun or messing around but when it comes to the skill based challenges it provides, the game is too inconsistant/random to be fun. Manage to clear a combat trial's first round in three seconds? roll the dice and hope you don't get a six second (or more) dying animation. Perform a move that game mechanics say should lead to a finisher? Role the dice to see if it does. In free target mode and want the enemy your running at to be the target of an attack? Role the dice to see if it will. Think the game selects targets based on how close they are to you? Role the dice to see if it does. Want to move the camera in blade mode so you can perform multiple Zandaitsus? Role the dice to see if you can. etc. In short I wouldn't recommend this if you want a game focused on skill based gameplay. All of this can be mitigated (not eliminated) with proper planning/tactics but you could definately feel cheated when you fail to reach a trial goal because of these flaws. Otherwise it's pretty good. The gameplay is quite fun to mess around with. Music really gets you into the fight while giving you a feel for your opponent's mindset. Progression/Unlock system feels rewarding. There is both a wealth of side content and replayability of the main story. The characters are likeable or of the 'love to hate' sort. The story is entertaining and there seems to be a good focus on rule of cool. Funnily enough the story feels more relevant now than when it came out.

I really like gameplay and the crazy story / memes. It's sad that the game does only support a fixed set of resolutions and tops out at 1920x1080 (there are mods, but the ones I found break QTEs which imho is not acceptable). At least also having 2560x1440 would have made it visually significantly better on screens where this matches the native resolution.

played this in one sitting the other day, never had a more adrenaline fueled gaming experience in my life.
