Terrible game, no melee, weapon reloads work in geological time, the normandy landing level is quite possible the most idiotic level ever created for a video game, ever. another EA McGame.
This game was the first "modern" game I played after I got my Windows XP computer (before that I only had Win 98). At the time the game blew my mind with its graphics and gameplay, but today it really doesn't look good.
There are too few details, and so extremely streamlined. It also ends too suddenly and even the first time I played it I remember thinking: "Was that it?" I was used to the long games like Quake 2 and Jedi Knight after all.
With the expansions the game becomes longer, but at the time there was this huge battle between CoD and MoH. CoD looked worse, but had better story and with CoD 2 the battle was won and has been ever since.
Allied Assault does have some great voice acting and the weapons feel cool and sound awesome. They really can deliever a punch.
I'd give this one a try, but like said: it hasn't aged too well and it gets boring. Even Pacific Assault was too streamlined with forrests who aren't really a forest.
For a WWII game I much rather would play CoD World at War or CoD 2.
Probably the cheapest game I've ever played.
Seldom have I played a game that so habitually resorts to design choices which are so complete bull. From placing you in incredibly unfair situations from the start like in the beach landings or the sniper train, to constantly respawning enemies until you reach a hidden checkpoint, and sometimes even then, to arbitrarily placing you in danger because of stupid decisions like laying a bomb with a 5 second timer or having bombs go off swiftly on the boat without any forewarning. There's also lots of ambushes, enemies shooting you that you can't see, shooting around corners without seeing you or having their weapons in the right direction, and so it goes.
This game treats quicksaves and quickloads like a core gameplay mechanic rather than a convenience or crutch and brutalizes the gameplay experience as a result.
One doesn't even have to refer to the dated graphics or simple gameplay to shaft this game. It's so unfair it does it for itself.
Today, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is good for nostalgia, but that's about all. If you don't have fond memories of this series, leave it alone.
When it was released, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault was exciting and gripping. It was the model World War II shooter, for a little while. It has not aged well. Obviously, the graphics are dated, but far more importantly, the gameplay mechanics are dated.
After MoH:AA, a large part of the development team left to form Infinity Ward, which went on to release Call of Duty. Call of Duty may have a bad reputation (in some circles) today, but it is worth remembering why people became so excited about CoD when was released and there is no better game to compare CoD to than MoH:AA.
In MoH:AA, you are nearly always alone, creeping around, sniping enemies and scrounging after health kits.
18 months later, Call of Duty came along with almost exactly the same formula, but with a more exciting and varied campaign. And for once, you were not alone! Yes, MoH:AA gives you some squadmates in a couple of missions, but they have a tendency to die immediately, at which point you are alone. Again. Just like in every other shooter you had ever played.
MoH:AA just feels dead by today's standards. You are alone. There are some Germans. You shoot them and move on to the next level.
When it was released, MoH:AA was very, very good. It was soon bested by a game that redefined the single-player shooter experience. If you want a WWII-style shooter from this era, get the original Call of Duty and forget about this one.
(Or, even better, get Call of Duty 2 - aka Halo with Nazis - although that is not really from the same "era")
This game has some of the worst compatibility issues with modern systems. Worst case scenario, it won't start at all- especially common with the expansions. If it does, you're likely to experience horrible stuttering. This was present on a variety of systems I've tested this game on- from Sandy Bridge to Coffee Lake. Strangely enough, this does not occur on my AMD Ryzen based system even using the same GPU. The D-Day level has broken skyboxes- it's like staring into an infinte grey void. As for the actual game, it's not very good. Call of Duty came out the following year, and in my opinion it blows MoHAA out of the water. The level design is terribly boxy and missions can be very frustrating (eg. Sniper Town). Graphically, even for 2002, is pretty unimpressive. There is a horrible LOD effect on NPCs that is super noticible at higher resolutions- even at 1152x864 I can see it. Textures are fairly average for a game of this age. On a more positive note, the music is some of the best I've ever heard in a video game.
I think Medal of Honor is good on the consoles, such as the PS1 or PS2, relative to what's available on those platforms but it's a major flop on PC.
