Changes to base game
They made changes that broke every mech in my arsenal, making my playthough entirely unplayable. After the game was finished they made these changes. Just to try and money grab with the DLCs.

A fun game, but could have been better
Note: This review is only of the base game. I've been a fan of the Battletech/Mechwarrior franchise for decades and have enjoyed most of the games. This enjoyment extends to MechWarrior 5, but, as the title of this review says, it could have been a more joyous experience. First, the positives: -Stomping around in giant battle machines and reducing cities to rubble will always be fun, and MW5 provides this experience. -The planets you visit are varied and the terrain rarely feels repetitive. -Graphics are nice. Everything from fiery explosions to collapsing buildings look great. -Battle music is top-notch, and you'll especially enjoy it if you like guitar-heavy riffs. Now for the drawbacks. There aren't many, but they're significant enough to keep the overall game from reaching its full potential. -The main story is light and uninspiring. This is doubly unfortunate because the Battletech universe has such a rich, deep well of lore to draw from. In a similar vein, the "high reward quests" should have offered more substantive narratives and mission objectives. Instead, they're essentially regular missions dressed up with a few extra paragraphs of background text. To me, these just felt like missed opportunities. -As the game progresses, lower-tonnage mechs become progressively useless, and on higher reputation levels, your only hope of completing missions is using mechs upward of 90 tons. At that point, you've essentially relegated much of your mech collection to cold storage and your selection of tactics devolves into basic slug fests. Don't get me wrong -- those can be fun, but the ability to use light and medium mechs to outflank your opponent would have opened a broader array of strategies, and strategy was always at Battletech's heart. Nevertheless, while the game may have some drawbacks, it's still a blast to play, and if you're a big fan of Battletech and MW, this is one title you don't want to miss.

This game should have been early access
To just make it short here what is really wrong about MW4 Mers - worst AI ever, no tactics at all (includes lance mates) - due to bad AI the player just gets hammered with tanks and mechs - too much grind for constantly repeating generic missions, hard to not lose fun before finishing campaign - even the quests and most part of the campaign are standard generic missions just with some custom mission text and voice - all ~20 missions you get some tanks or mechs stuck in terrain - stuck units may drop out of map (if mission includes killing all enemies it means the mission breaks) - base game is just a frame for dlc's and mods (mods are great, but only if a game doesnt fully rely on it) - dlc's break the mods and add the mods content for you to pay - only orders for lance mates: "go there", "follow me", "stop/start shooting", "attack my target (and ignore all others)" If MW4 Mers would have been advertised as pure mod frame and updates would be made in coordination with major modders, the game would be good for the most part (except the terrible AI). But as it is, i feel ripped off. Just because the last dlc related update broke my major mods, i will not spend money on it to get back half of the mods content. Piranha Games gets on my black lists for this marketing strategy.

Fun if you if you take contracts only
This is not hard core Mechwarrior sim where you need to push every button. This is a jump in, shoot the bad guys, accomplish the objectives and then get paid. You are running a business basically. I have finished the main story and I have all the tonnage you can get. I have Hero Atlas mechs if I want if I need to crush something, but my main go to is a 30 ton Spider that has been heavily modified with class VI (Orange) equipment from dual machines guns to dual pulse medium lasers, Art IV SRM, and dual anti missile defense. The modifications has taken this thing to 149 kmh, and I use the speed to humble Mechs twice to 3 times its size. This is where the fun is. I usually have a couple 100 tons or more of allies coming in to defend my back, but the speed and the the need to be quick on your targets while running a circle around them is the best. Of course, replacing some of this class VI equipment will be tough if I lose and arm or something, but I have a few spares. Currently playing the Kestral Lancers and my Spider is my main go to. Give me an Atlas enemy and I will take him down with this thing.
