Classic GEM
So far I've only played 1, but I could not put it down. It seems simple, clean interface, not a ton of screens but there's a lot of depth to it. Will you focus on early infrastructure and production or on research and exploration? How will you balance keeping up in offensive weapons tech while making sure not to lag behind in construction and stalling your economy? There's plenty of choices, every game is different and exciting. One downside to the game strategy is the races are not balanced whatsoever from a player perspective (Psilons and Meklar are head and shoulders better than everything else) and mixing up your racial choices leaves something to be desired. Also the AI is pretty bad at tactical space combat. They do not build ships to counter yours at all and are terrible at attacking your colonies. Tech trading interface doesn't work well at all with majority of deals being unbalanced for one side. Final remark is technically the game runs extremely slow. I'm pretty sure it's due to the game coding itself and not pc specs/dos box etc. Mouse input lags and on huge galaxies you can wait 20-30s between turns. It really sucks and is a shame because winning the game on huge becomes a bit of a chore. Still worth 4 stars though imo.
