Pleasantly surprised

I'm not really sure how I picked Master of Magic over so many other games, but I'm really glad I did. I never played this game back when it came out, so I came into this as a new player in 2011, and I have to say MoM really stands the test of time. One of the biggest problems I usually encounter playing these older games is the UI or general rules are archaic or hard to learn for a new player, but MoM is really easy to pick up and play. I actually played through an entire game, which is almost unheard of for me nowadays with my time constraints, so I highly recommend MoM :)

Don't cast Raise Dead

If you do, all the Galley units in the game will acquire every special, including weapon immunity, flight, and the ability to settle towns. I don't recall having this bug when this game was new! Even if one of the AI opponents casts Raise Dead, your game is boned. I love this game, but I can't stand this bug.

Unique

I found myself recently trying out Age of Wonders as an attempt to relive the excitement of playing Master of Magic, it did not hold up to the memory of this great game at all. This is Civilization meets strategic battles with magical creatures, an absurd amount of spells and large armies. From several playable (AND conquerable) races, to different schools of magic and different features, the game offers a wide variety of winning (and losing) strategies to try. The ruins, nodes and other structures offer great value in exploration and potential for reward, at risk of stepping your foot in an encounter you were not ready to win. It isn't PERFECT, but for me it is the BEST game in the genre so far. Any company that looks into this and finds the proper way to enhance its positive characteristics and fix some of its flaws could be sitting in a goldmine.

MoM port good, CoM buggy AF

The port of MoM is well done, but the Caster of Magic mod is really buggy. I've looked through the manuals, and searched online but couldn't find where the computer gets to cast several (between 2 and 5) spells per combat round with no casting units. It's not a one off, it's not a problematic enemy, it's ALL AI. This is on a 'normal' difficulty as well. If you are looking for a supportable way to play MoM, this is your jam. If you are looking for a challenge where the AI 'cheats with both hands while kicking you in the genitals', play the Caster of Magic mod built into it.

At the top 10 my all time favorite list

This game was/is amazing. It's got all the great strategic depth and complexity of Civilization, combined with the awesomeness of a magical fantasy world. When I first found out about GOG the first game I thought of was Master of Magic and was sad to see it was not yet available. And now it is, so happy day indeed!
