The good, the bad, and some ugly...

... Just like your crew. GOOD: +Quite a few of unique ships. Each new ship is a new experience and may need a new approach. +Crew. Each crewmember have their own traits. One is tough, but coward. The other likes when it snows. And that guy couldn't see a wargalley even if it were two paces before him, but at least is loyal. Will make a fine cook. Also, while on sea, you can hear your crew yelling at each another, or commenting on the weather. +Log. It's a nice touch, and contains flavor texts as well as useful info, like what goods you sold and where, and with what profit. +Sea fights. Those are nice, not too fast, and not sluggish either. That is unless you try to sail upwinds. Plus your crew cheers with each shot that hits true. Real team spirit. BAD: -Sailing. While your vessel sails true, and your crew yells at something, there is not much more to it. No singing, no soundtrack whatsoever (see below). God bless the 8x speed. -Customisation. It's somewhat limited, but I have faith. You could expect a beard on your captain. No, you don't get one. What about a parrot? A pirate needs a parrot. So far you can get griffon. Good enough. -And yet, log. It lacks the entries about encounters, that would later excuse entries like "hired X, Y, Z, M," or "gathered N megalodon teeth" which are already there. -No ship capture. So far you can only scutle the boat, there is no way to claim it as your own, or make it a prize ship and sell. Pitty. UGLY: =Boarding. Now if you get into boarding, you get the sluggish. While you can snipe some enemies off, it's less of a problem. In swordplay, however, you swing that sword as if you wanted to say "turn based". No it isn't. =Soundtrack, or lack thereof. I heard some scores exactly two times so far. Once in a city after closing the pause menu, and once during some random sea skirmish. On longer cruises the silence is maddening. It makes you want to sacrifice your crew and pledge yourself to Slaanesh. Not sure if intended.

All the joys of the sea. . . also boring

To be honest, it's been quite a while since I played, but it doesn't look to have changed much (which is probably already a mark against it), so take what I say with a grain of salt. The game's graphics are weak, but if you're like me that's not a problem. The problem is in the game itself. It starts of strong with a sea of many things to do and enemies to defeat -- you have a pretty robust crew system and lots of ships to choose from and to fight, not to mention exciting sea beasties. But after a few hours you'll quickly realize that the pirates are rapidly being wiped out by friendly navies and the vast majority of the beasts are megalodons, which once you've killed three or four stop being all that interesting or exciting like the first time. Soon you find yourself sailing the seas with nothing to do but trade goods back and forth and occasionally go out of your way to hunt a sea monster that's probably the same type you've spent most of the game killing. And that sailing involves little to no soundtrack and having to speed up time (though not enough in my opinion) in order to move on to the next bit of boring trading. There's a chaos campaign that I found far too busy and reliant on boarding and melee combat, which is a miserably sluggish affair, and ship skirmishes, which just never interested me at all All in all, a big disappointment.

Pretty good

After playing a few hours of the 1.0 version, I must say that this game is pretty good with some rough edges. From my perspective there was quite a learning curve at the beginning, but once I got used to the controls and learned some little tricks, like slowing time in sea battles to be able to aim better, it got a lot easier, and after sinking an invasion fleet on my own, and shooting an ork in the face with a musket, I can say that will be having quite a lot of fun with this game. Another thing I like are the noticeably different playstiles depending on if you play as an independent or a chaos champion. The first plays out like the usual pirate simulator with a nice dose of Warhammer mixed in. The chaos path means pretty much throwing away diplomacy, trading, etc. to just wreak havoc along the sea. The monsters are challenging, but still beatable. What could need some improvement is the graphic department, meaning for example that the heavy shoulderpads my character is wearing look somewhat oversized. Unless my characters get's burlier as he levels up, or something, I'd wish for equipment that's a bit more to measure. Since the game has just reached a releasable state, I'm looking forward to see what future patches will bring. Until then I will have fun with the game, because it definetely is fun.

Is it really that bad

The answer is yes. I brought the game and Reiks fashion when it came out of inDev. Love the Warhammer world, was looking for ward to some action in said world. What first strikes you is that graphics are very poor, then you move and realize the graphics were not the worst part. Movement is horrible, slow, swinging a sword feels like swimming, very little in the way of fluid movement or character animation. The world seems open, didn't get far into it as the game is totally buggy in all respects. Boats floating high above the sea, or half under the sea. It gets worse when you get to the towns, which are populated by one or two merchants who have one animation and one or two other characters which are moved around as if on rails. Then all of sudden you find yourself teleported out into the middle of the sea, end of that game. Bugs bugs everywhere, no not the set of Starship Troopers but this poor, deliberate attempt to cash in on the Warhammer name. If you want open world piratey ship combat go get Black Sail. If you want to throw away £20 on what can only be described as someones first foray into making a game in unity, then go ahead. Nothing at all redeeming about this title whatsoever and most definitely my worst purchase from GOG in many years.

V1.3.5 the odd bug but man it's awesome!

currently worth price tag due to fun had! (be sure to buy griffon dlc too) the top review (at this time complains) about things that are often no longer valid if you like any kind of pirate game you'll probbaly really like this game. It really captures the feel of the warhammer world. wait till you see one of those orc vessel treadmill powered with a ram coming for you :D. the combat on board was better then expected imo. Tip theres a icesword that really makes you a damage dealer in combat: quest is somwhere in a kislev city. youll have to search each iceberg if you try, its worth it! I recommend you do the campaign if you buy as a neutral force instead of picking a side at first. dont forget to pick up the dlc if you can spare some coin. there are besides orcs many pirates and many chaos ships variables partys that can be a real bother if they are strong unless your well equiped. as a kind of example whats diffrent from the v1.0 version of the cons mentioned in other reviews i think there are other kind of ships but theres loads of more content right now compared to the first version. the game evven talks of skaven ships with warpcannons not sure if those are already in the game. The only 2 annoying bugs i've incountered are crewmembers falling off (they reappear unharmed) and after you quit the game it gets stuck and has to usally be forced closed. not really gamebreaking but annoying a bit. conclusion: the ship vs ship combat is great fun especially the fireing your cannons effectivly is loads of fun! (if your good at aligning a shot at the enemy ships (dont forget to pick up any drifting cargo barrels for free loot ah and you can capture ships sometimes.
