Loved this game! I only have to build buildings and set some incentives for the characters and that's it! Character personality does the rest.
I think this is the only real SIM game I have ever played. What a pleasure to create a unit and not have to tell it what to do
I just write this review to rectify other old reviews, the game is updated and the version is newest than Steam one, so the game on GOG is a superior version, works perfectly on Windows 10 and is a very fun and addictive strategy game, a classic that you can play today without any problems. If it just for the gameplay, this game is a 6 stars, but has some technical problems due to the lack of a proper remaster, UI doesn't scalete properly on 16:9 or any other modern resolution, so I recommend to play it on 1280x720p.
Another problem is the tutorial, is really bad, one of the worst tutorials I ever play, the game can be a little complex for those that are new in the game or in RTS in general, so I recommend you to check some videos before start playing.
Besides that is a Majestic game (soery for the pun).
The term 'RTS' doesn't actually apply to this game. In fact, I would say that Majesty is in its own genera. Construct buildings, pay for units, upgrade the tech tree - all here. But the charm and uniqueness of the game lies in its over-arching way to play. Units meander on their own and react to bounties and gold incentives to venture out. Units level up and buy gear with money they earn from their guild (or from your bounties). The money you spend comes full circle back to you, with some added.
There are mutually exclusive buildings, and about three different 'paths' to choose in which higher tier units you wish to employ. Each choice feels unique and promotes replayability to discover which is your preferred, and which unit you classify as your 'hard mod challenge'.
The A.I. can be derpy and sometimes you'd wish for full control to help avoid stupid situations, or to group units into proper parties.
However this is part of the challenge. Would a king be able to control his heroes without being out with them? This is a macro-management fantasy game. If this sounds like it will frustrate you, it just might. However with how inexpensive it is, it really is worth your time to check out.
Why only 4/5? I don't want my nostalgia goggles to cloud the fact that this game could use an A.I. upgrade. But the system is solid and it's aged rather well. It holds up today.
The AI in Majesty 1 is dumb as rocks, likes to wander around in the wilderness alone unless it's one of the few combinations of heroes which party together, fights futilely to the death when ambushed, and its ability to form functional parties is questionable at best. I was fairly frustrated when I found 11 of my 12 healers following a single warrior wandering around on the opposite side of the kingdom from all the action. This is a very common occurrence where the ability to defend your kingdom relies a great deal on the random whimsies of the AI. This doesn't mean the game isn't fun to play, it just requires an upbeat attitude which finds the silliness funny rather than infuriating. And thanks to the randomly generated campaign maps, there is plenty of room for repetition until success is achieved.
The game brings kingdom building in spades, and deciding how to spend precious starting money is usually pretty fun. There isn't really a lot to say here. Three races to assist (or hamper) you in various ways and two choices of sets of religions. Sadly the randomly generated maps are always large, flat fields, so base layout doesn't get a lot of variety.
Overall it's pretty fun and worth a 4/5.
Majesty is one of those games that I buy on every online game provider there is, own the original disk copy, and actually own all the sound files/images/extras. I have a backup of a backup, just so that if the world goes to hell, and I'm in my underground bunker with my old backup XP machine fired up, I can get one last game in before the generator runs out of fuel. This is one of the games that are scheduled for a final play, before the world goes dark.
Just like Dungeon Keeper, Majesty is one of the "It's like..." games of it's era which other games are compared and measured. Autonomous RTS/Sim games are rare, and with a slight comic flair at that, this game nails that concept in spades. What I mean by autonomous, is that you place your buildings, get your kingdom going, and kinda just hope for the best. You can place bounties to influence the heros to do your bidding, and they very well may - or may not, do so. With hilarious, awesome, and sometimes devastating results. Be prepared to lose, but learn how to win the next time. It's almost a puzzle game in that respect.
Why do I love this game so much? There is some rose-colored glasses here. It is an old game, but it's dripping charm. Even to this day, the sounds that each type of hero makes are music to my ears. Their personalities carry the game in ways that none other have. Each unit/faction is unique, and for lack of better term "lovable" in their own way. They all have endearing traits. You can click on each and every hero, and they have an inventory. They have a spell list, and abilities. They have desires. And again, the voice lines in the game - you will love the elves. You will snicker along with the thief. You will feel your heart pound when the Paladins scream their battle cry and head into battle, saving the day.
In closing - it can be frustrating. The difficulty is often you being "thrown to the dogs" early and often. Be patient, crank out some heros, and hope for the best!
